Torera is the inspiring story of Maria Elena Ramierez, who valiantly breaks barriers and makes a space for herself in the male-dominated world of bullfighting. Jacqeline Giullen skillfully takes the character from a brash young girl full of ambitions to a confident young woman fulfilling her dreams. She brilliantly personifies the dichotomy of being caught between the life one is expected to lead and the desire to pursue one's dreams. Jared Machado endearingly plays Tanok, her mostly loyal and supportive best friend. Elena Hurst is fierce and protective in the role of Maria Elena's mother, Pastora. Jorge Cordova is dismissive and condescending in the role of her would-be benefactor, Tanok's father, and her mother's employer. A pair of dancers who weave in and out of the story make up the rest of the cast.
There is a disturbing and somewhat soap opera-ish element to the plot regarding a long-held secret. This can be easily guessed long before it is revealed if you pay attention to the character's interactions. Luckily, the more disturbing aspects of this plot point are mostly skimmed over rather than being delved into in a significant way. The secret itself, however, is extremely important to the story, and it is what ultimately leads Maria Elena on the path to realizing her dreams.
