Books: Stephen Sondheim's Sweeney Todd & Useless Etymology
Today, we recommend Stephen Sondheim's Sweeney Todd. Although this is a great book for any theater fan, particularly musical theater fans, especially those who are especially fond of the works of Stephen Sondheim, it is a must-have for anyone who has a special fondness for or interest in what some consider his greatest masterpiece, Sweeney Todd. This quite comprehensive book delves thoroughly into every aspect of the show. It not only covers the creation of the musical, including an in-depth discussion of its source material as well as a complete history of the original Broadway production, but also meticulously covers every major production since then, including foreign productions. It also covers the Tim Burton movie version. There is even an entire synopsis of the plot, including the placement of all of the songs. Anything you want to know about this seminal show, you can find in this extremely in-depth book.
Today, we recommend Useless Etymology by Jess Zafarris. If you are interested in words and where they come from, you are definitely going to want to read this book. In it, you will discover the fascinating origin of numerous words and phrases, many of which probably didn't come from where you may think they did. The book covers a large number of specific topics, including animal-related words, food-related words, and many more. It also covers other unusual but quite interesting topics, such as words that aren't really words, great words that are no longer in use, and more. If you are a lover of words, you will want this book in your library.
Film: Broadway, Bars, and Fortune
Today, we recommend the Broadway, Bars, and Fortune. This short documentary shows the healing power of the arts and how they can help redeem former convicts. It tells the story of the Fortune Society of New York and the people they have helped to reclaim their lives and become productive members of society through theater since 1967. The film details the journeys of four formerly incarcerated individuals whom the Fortune Society has helped. You won't want to miss this touching and inspiring film.
