Me - I had no expectations going into the show because I was unfamiliar with it. My mom told me people were saying good things, but I hadn't heard anything. However, it surprised me in a good way, and I had a great time watching it.
It was a very fun show. Learning about the actual Operation Mincemeat was interesting because it wasn't something I had been aware of before. While watching, I was so invested in what was happening that I became stressed about whether the operation would succeed, even though I knew it would. They made it so real. That made the show even more exciting to watch.
The entire cast was terrific! I was unfamiliar with any of the performers because they all transferred with the show from the original production in England, but they were all amazing! They all switched back and forth between several different characters, and they were equally good at each, making them all so real.
The opening number, "Born to Lead," is the kind of song that sticks in your head. Many other songs are also good, although they are slightly less memorable and don't stick in your head as much. However, they are still songs that you will want to listen to again.
The show was supposed to be a strictly limited run. It is still a limited run, although the closing date has been changed several times, and the run has been extended.
You won't want to miss this incredible show! You should definitely see it while you can!
Mom - There's incredible word of mouth surrounding the show, Operation Mincemeat. It's hard to believe any show could live up to all that hype. Yet this one does. It's that good.
The plot revolves around a little-known World War II spy operation. However, despite its wartime setting, the show's tone is mainly light and fun, and it is suitable for all audiences except very young children. The fast pace and exciting plot keep things interesting for the duration. There is never a time when the action lags or the show gets boring. It's also extremely funny, and can be surprisingly heartfelt and even a little bit sad at times.
The show was, in fact, created by the cast members who are all members of the British comedy troupe SpiitLip and all began playing their roles in the original English production. Four of the five cast members were nominated for Olivier Awards, and one won the award. The show also received two other Olivier nominations, including Best Musical, which it also won.
The performances are all incredible! Each performer takes on several roles with equal skill, and they effortlessly float in and out of them at a moment's notice. It is all very gender diverse as well. Sometimes men play women and women play men, and it all works and is all believable.
The score, which was likewise written by the brilliantly talented cast, is terrific too. The opening number, "Born to Lead," is an earworm that won't get out of your head even if you can't remember all the words. There are plenty of other delightful songs as well. Some of the songs are a little long, however. They are like stories in and of themselves. They start with one song, then go off on a tangent or two and finish with the tune they began with. It can be a lot, although the songs are still quite fun.
The entire show is just a joy! You won't want to miss it! It is literally one of the most entertaining shows ever!
