What: Total Vocal 10th Anniversary Concert
Where: David Geffen Hall
10 Lincoln Center Plaza
New York, NY
Who: All ages
When: This event took place on April 12, 2025
Last Saturday, April 12, 2025, the 10th Anniversary Total Vocal A cappella concert was staged at David Geffen Hall at Lincoln Center. As per usual, the concert was led by Deke Sharon. Sharon, known as the father of contemporary a cappella, has had a hand in all or most of the most well-known a cappella-related entertainment experiences, including the Pitch Perfect movies, In Transit, the first a cappella musical on Broadway, and the one-season TV series, Pitch Slapped.
Sharon is quite a cheerleader for his art. His bubbly, ebullient, joyful personality set the perfect tone for the evening. His contagious love and enthusiasm for what he does spilled over to all, rendering the entire event like a giant lovefest between the performers and the audience.
Over the past several years, the concert was reduced to one act, however, this year marked a return to a two-act format, making it seem much longer in a good way. This may have been because so many performers wanted to participate that there were separate casts of singers for the first and second acts. Even so, the audience definitely benefited from the opportunity to share in even more glorious singing.
The first act included mostly younger singers, including singers as young as 8. Song choices included "Be Our Guest" from Beauty and the Beast, "This is Me" from The Greatest Showman, "Jessie's Girl", "Blackbird", and more. The second act included mostly older performers and a special guest appearance from Shelley Regner, a star of the Pitch Perfect movies and a member of the Disney-related vocal group, DCappella. Song in this half, included "Forever Young", "Somebody to Love", "Wichita Lineman", "Friend Like Me" from Aladdin, and more. Highlights of the event included Miley Cyrus' "Flowers" sung while simultaneously being interpreted in sign language by all participating performers, a wordless Beethoven medley, and Sharon himself singing the lead on "I Could Write a Book" as a tribute to his wife, who was in the audience. The entire event was just a sonorous pleasure for all who attended.
