I started this blog with one daughter, kept it up with the other, to spend time together doing something we enjoyed.
However, things change and people evolve. My daughters are older, busier, and not as interested in writing.
From now on this blog will be mostly mom with occasional contributions from my daughters and maybe even my husband.
Nothing else will change. We'll still focus on sharing fun places to go, fun things to do, and more, and we would  still love to hear your views too

Stuart Zagnit—best known as the original voice of Professor Oak in the “Pokémon” television series—will officially join the cast of BALLS: The Monster-Catchin’ Musical Comédy for an initial limited pop-up performance at CAVEAT NYC Zagnit’s casting brings a one-two punch of Broadway polish and iconic nostalgia to the immersive parody already making waves in New York’s alt-theatre scene.

3) Class Dismissed

Your favorite professor slides into dementia; while his two grad-students hallucinate a post-capitalist manifesto; and his nemesis - the Other-Lit-Professor - performs love poems inspired by her affair in a prestigious artist colony. Anticipate your (consensual) participation as we peel yuca, improvise dances, make butter, and invite the audience onstage to eat (bread), drink (Puerto Rican rum), write on the set (with chalk), and swap books (that they brought to the show). With live music, sing-alongs, and a different guest artist at each performance. This is the grad school you wish you went to!

4) e-Motion

e-Motion, a dance-theater collaboration between choreographer Daniel Gwirtzman and playwright Saviana Stănescu, explores AI, neuroscience and what it means to be human in a digital age. Gwirtzman creates a physical interpretation of Stănescu’s provocative text that brings conceptual ideas deep into the human body. The score is text, augmented by music composed by the late Jeff Story, a longtime collaborator of DGDC. The narrative duet, performed by Gwirtzman and Sarah Hillmon, follows the presentation of the AI creature for public consumption. The big launch. What could go wrong? Reviewing the premiere, The Ithaca Times wrote: “What e-Motion does well is to articulate the concerns (part ethical, part dystopian) of the bond between human and AI.”

e-Motion is presented in a shared program with Pat Catterson’s Tremor, a work for five dancers, and Then, a new solo. Join Daniel Gwirtzman Dance Company in celebrating the 20th anniversary season of La MaMa Moves! Dance Festival in a performance that explores resistance and transformation. The full festival runs from April 10-May 4, 2025.

5) The Death of Rasputin

Whispers in the candlelight, shadows in the corridors— The Death of Rasputin is no mere play; it is a descent into decadence, a fever-dream of power, prophecy, and betrayal. This debaucherous satire unfolds as a lavish, unholy revel, conjuring the espionage and mysticism that danced at the edges of the Romanov dynasty in its twilight hour. Here, every character claws for dominion, every ambition is laced with poison, and every grasp for power pulls them closer to the abyss.

With history and legend entwined, and the specter of Rasputin looming large, this production dares to reclaim the grand spectacle of immersive performance, shattering the mold long held by the few. The revolution is here. The prophecy is written. Will you heed the call?

 6) Love's Concordia Bar

Pragma, a young woman navigating her first relationship, suspects her girlfriend Ludus—distant and not exactly the picture of empathy—might be cheating on her. Determined to uncover the truth, Pragma decides to follow Ludus one night. Her pursuit leads her to LOVE’S CONCORDIA BAR, a mysterious burlesque club owned and operated by Love itself. The bar has only one rule for entry—there’s no age limit, but you must be in Love to step inside.

But are Pragma and Ludus truly in Love?

Gilbert & Sullivan’s pirate ship docks in New Orleans in this jazzy-bluesy vision of the crowd-pleasing classic, in an outrageously clever romp sizzling with Caribbean rhythms and French Quarter flair. With the tongue-twisting Major-General, the rabble-rousing Pirate King, newly-imagined young lovers, daring daughters, footloose pirates and fleet-footed police, there's a shipload of musical comedy delights on board to dazzle first-timers and G&S aficionados alike.

9) Soulmate

Soulmate is a pulse pounding adults-only play with original music that explores the complexities of marriage -  pushing the boundaries of love, desire, and intimacy. When Cyrene and Caleb decide to add another woman into their relationship, the audience is thrust into a whirlwind of emotional turmoil and unexpected revelations. With its bold themes of sexual exploration, and raw vulnerability, the show has us question the very nature of connection and attachment.  Daring, unapologetic, and deeply moving, Soulmate thrusts audiences into the raw and sometimes uncomfortable realities of opening their hearts beyond traditional boundaries.

The production is intended for audiences 18+. Viewer discretion is advised.

10) A Midsummer Night's Dream

A Midsummer Night’s Dream asks if love is for the foolish. Four Athenian youths reject their parents’ efforts to interfere in their romantic lives and choose to run away instead of facing the love-limiting laws of the land. Lost in the surrounding wilderness, the lovers stumble upon a fairy kingdom in conflict; a spat between the fairy king and queen so great it threatens to alter the earth’s orbit and suspend its seasons. A group of laborers, secretly rehearsing their play for a royal competition, also wander unwittingly into the middle of the fairy battle. Mayhem ensues, and Shakespeare confirms we can all prove an ass when in love.

11) Anthony and Cleopatra

Antony & Cleopatra poses the question, can passion topple an empire? Julius Caesar is assassinated, the rebellion foiled, and the Roman Empire is now ruled equally by three men, of which Mark Antony is the most powerful. Stationed in the east, Mark Antony summons Cleopatra, the Queen of Egypt, to demand submission, but instead, Antony is subdued by Cleopatra’s beauty, wit, and charm. Heart tied to Cleopatra, Antony neglects his wife and empire, the man of war surrendering to a life of decadence, seduction, and the pleasures of Egypt. Torn between desire and duty, will the eternity in their eyes and in their lips create a new global power, or will Antony and Cleopatra’s passions lead to the fall of the empire?

24) A Day of Conversations About Democracy at

 NJPAC on April 16

Sherrilyn Ifill, civil rights lawyer and former head of the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, to deliver keynote address

Policy experts will lead an afternoon of interactive conversations
on immigration and voting rights

A bipartisan panel of NJ gubernatorial candidates to speak
on urgent social justice topics

On April 16, the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC), the New Jersey Institute for Social Justice and The Fund for New Jersey will host a day of programming dedicated to examining the state of democracy in New Jersey and across the United States.

New Jersey is one of two states scheduled to hold gubernatorial elections in 2025 and campaigning is taking place amid rapid changes introduced by a new presidential administration. The results of these off-year elections in the Garden State are often considered a bellwether for broader national elections.

This day of conversations, presentations, speeches and panel discussions — across two distinct but related events at NJPAC — will examine the current state of American democracy through the lens of civic, social and racial justice, with a special focus on the issues most important to New Jersey.

Sherrilyn Ifill will open the afternoon event — Doubling Down on Democracy: Conversations about the Way Forward — with a keynote address at 1PM.
Ifill served as the President and Director-Counsel of the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc. (LDF), the nation’s premier civil rights law organization. She is a respected attorney, scholar, thought leader and author whose forthcoming book, Is this America? (Penguin), deals with race and the pressures reshaping American democracy.

Following the keynote, two interactive panels will offer the perspectives of local policy experts on two hot-button issues. The first panel will address immigration and the impact of new federal policies governing deportation and naturalization. The second panel will examine New Jersey’s laws and policies regarding voting rights, ballot design, the census and more.

Tickets for the afternoon event cost $15, and lunch is included. Purchase tickets hereDoubling Down on Democracy is sponsored by The Fund for NJ.

The conversation will continue at 6:30PM with a free social justice forum featuring candidates running for Governor in New Jersey. All of the candidates campaigning for Governor were invited. Six will appear at this event: Mayor of Newark Ras J. Baraka, NJ State Sen. Jon Bramnick, Mayor of Jersey City Steven Fulop, U.S. Rep. Mikie Sherrill, New Jersey Education Association Pres. Sean Spiller and former NJ Senate Pres. Steve Sweeney.

This bipartisan group of candidates will share their perspectives on a range of important social justice topics.

26) AMERICAN HISTORY UNBOUND RETURNS TO CARNEGIE HALL

 WITH

“THE GREAT WAR & THE GREAT GATSBY”

ON MONDAY, APRIL 21 AND TUESDAY, APRIL 22

HISTORIAN AND NARRATOR JOHN MONSKY

RETURNS TO THE STERN AUDITORIUM / PERELMAN STAG

E DIRECTED BY MICHAEL MAYER

WITH THE ORCHESTRA OF ST. LUKE’S AND STARRY

 BROADWAY CAST INCLUDING

ADAM CHANLER BERAT, NICHOLAS

CHRISTOPHER, MICAELA DIAMOND, GRACIE MCGRAW, AND

DIEGO ANDRES RODRIGUEZ

Following his sold-out 2023 performance of The Great War & The Great Gatsby, historian and narrator John Monsky returns to Carnegie Hall this spring with a bold re-envisioning of his critically acclaimed production. Performances will take place on Monday, April 21 and Tuesday, April 22, at 7:30 p.m.

Directed by Tony Award-winner Michael Mayer (Spring Awakening), this newly reimagined production—equal parts concert, suspense, drama, romance, tribute, and exhibition of rare and iconic images and film from the National Archives—brings fresh insights, newly uncovered research, and additional musical selections to create a vivid and emotionally powerful journey for this musical and visual exploration of World War I.

A stellar cast has been assembled for this production, including Adam Chanler-Berat (Next to Normal), Nicholas Christopher (Hamilton), Micaela Diamond (Parade), Gracie McGraw (OWN’s “If Loving You Is Wrong”), and Diego Andres Rodriguez (Sunset Boulevard). Ian Weinberger (Hamilton) will serve as music supervisor, conductor, and arranger.

The performances of The Great War & The Great Gatsby will be filmed for a televised event, thanks to the generous support of Citadel founder and CEO Kenneth C. Griffin and his civic engagement initiative Griffin Catalyst. With the aim of “Catalyzing American Achievement,” one of Griffin Catalyst’s six priority areas is Freedom & Democracy, core ideas enshrined in John Monsky’s creative work at American History Unbound.

F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, which marks the 100th anniversary of its publication this month, is a starting point as Monsky guides the audience through the war’s origins and its harrowing climax during the Meuse-Argonne Offensive, as seen through the wartime experiences of both fictional and real-life figures:

WWI veterans Jay Gatsby and Nick Carraway

Combat pilot Quentin Roosevelt, the son of President Theodore Roosevelt

Soldier and music pioneer, Harlem Hellfighter, James Reese Europe

Author Vera Brittain, a young nurse who loses everything in the war, except her determination to end all wars

Charles Whittlesey, a shy New York lawyer leading a melting pot of soldiers trapped under fire in the Meuse-Argonne Forest

New York debutante Flora Payne Whitney

And Cher Ami, a homing pigeon who becomes an unlikely symbol of American resolve and fortitude.

Created by Baltimore Center Stage (BCS) Artist-in-Residence Bo Frazier, the project aims to commission, develop, and publish 10 new plays about the real history of gender nonconformity which has existed across all cultures since the beginning of time.  Ten transgender and gender non-conforming writers (TGNC) will be selected and commissioned by BCS, and subsequently placed into 2-year development residencies at regional theaters across the country.

The first cohort of five playwrights will be selected in summer 2025 through an open submission process, which is now live at centerstage.org/trans-history-project/. Each playwright will receive a commission fee of $10,000. Each play will then receive development support from a coalition of regional theaters including Diversionary Theatre in San Diego, CA, Rattlestick Theater in New York City,NY, Round House Theatre in Bethesda, MD, as well as Baltimore Center Stage. Every summer during the project, BCS will host an annual convening of commissioned playwrights to share work and be in community with fellow TGNC artists.

32) Brooklyn Children’s Museum Turns Earth Day

into Week-Long STEM Celebration with its Earth

 Rocks! Spring Break Fest

From April 13 to 19, the Museum will offer Earth science experiments, STEM challenges and hands-on demonstrations for the city’s youngest environmentalists

This spring break, Brooklyn Children’s Museum (BCM) invites families to celebrate our incredible planet with Earth Rocks!, a week-long festival of exploration, STEM learning, and eco-friendly fun. Running daily from Sunday, April 13 through Saturday, April 19 during the New York City Department of Education’s Spring Recess, Earth Rocks! offers a dynamic lineup of hands-on activities, live performances, and Earth science workshops designed to inspire curiosity and environmental stewardship in children of all ages.

With a focus on sustainability and the wonders of nature, this year’s festival features the following Earth-themed adventures:

Soil, Plants, and Food
Families will explore the fascinating world of plants and sustainable food systems through interactive workshops and demonstrations. Kids can create natural plant-based dyes, learn about hydroponic farming with Mi Oh My Farms, and pot their own fragrant plants with Brooklyn Botanic Garden educators to take home and nurture.

Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle
Families will learn to transform trash into treasure by participating in flower reuse workshops with Bloom Again Brooklyn, learning all about composting with Cues, creating upcycled projects with Friends of Brower Park, and discovering how worms recycle food scraps into rich soil with the NYC Department of Sanitation.

Animals and Insects
During BCM’s live animal programming, families will meet some of nature’s most fascinating creatures up close. Kids can touch blue caterpillars and see tarantulas during bug encounters with entomologist Dr. Aaron Rodriques, dance along to a high-energy, bug-fact-filled performance by Ants on a Log, and bring their favorite stuffed animal for a “check-up” at our stuffed animal care station, where they’ll use real medical tools like stethoscopes and thermometers.

All Week: What’s the Juice? — STEM Project
In BCM’s Nature’s Engineers STEM makerspace, young engineers will experiment with sustainable energy by building their own food-powered batteries. Can a potato light up a bulb? How about a lemon? Kids can put their curiosity to the test in this electrifying challenge!

All Week: Earth Homes – Art Project
In BCM’s ColorLab family art studio, young artists will explore sculptural environmental storytelling inspired by creating an ‘Earth Home,’ inspired by artist Beverly Buchanan. Using clay, sticks, rocks, and other natural materials, kids will mold a structure, add texture with natural elements, and then personalize it with details like doors, windows, or a stoop.

Additional programming throughout the week includes animal yoga with Fit N Play Mama, oyster reef exploration with Billion Oyster Project, and healthy eating and rooftop gardening activities with Magnolia Tree Earth Center.

Families are invited to drop by BCM during the NYC DOE Spring Recess to engage in joyful learning, STEM discovery, and care for the planet.

Visitors can participate in BCM’s week-long Earth Rocks! festival from Sunday, April 13 to Saturday, April 19 with the purchase of a general admission ticket: $15 per child and adult, $14 per grandparent, and FREE for children under the age of one. Her new full-length play Crime Fiction is a current Finalist in the ScreenCraft 2025 stage play competition.

The Mighty Four by Catherine Butterfield – The lives of a prominent liberal couple are upended when their son commits a horrific act of racial violence that is caught on video and goes viral. To their horror, the boy is embraced and made famous by the far right. How far do you go to protect a child whose actions you abhor? This reading will take place on Wednesday, April 23rd at 7:00 PM.

Catherine Butterfield is a playwright, novelist, TV and screenplay writer whose work has been performed in New York, regional theatre, and internationally in London and Barcelona. 40) FOUR CRITICALLY ENDANGERED

GALAPAGOS TORTOISES HATCH

AT PHILADELPHIA ZOO -

 FIRST SUCCESSFUL HATCHING OF SPECIES

IN ZOO HISTORY

PHILADELPHIA ZOO'S OLDEST RESIDENTS

MOMMY AND ABRAZZO ARE NEW PARENTS

AT ESTIMATED 100 YEARS OLD

Philadelphia Zoo is overjoyed to announce the hatching of four critically endangered Western Santa Cruz Galapagos tortoises for the first time in the Zoo’s 150+ year history. The hatchlings’ parents, female Mommy and male Abrazzo, are the Zoo’s two oldest residents, each estimated to be around 100 years old. Additionally, Mommy is considered one of the most genetically valuable Galapagos tortoises in the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) Species Survival Plan (SSP). She is also the oldest first-time mom of her species. The hatchlings, currently behind-the-scenes inside the Reptile and Amphibian House, are eating and growing appropriately, weighing between 70-80 grams (about the weight of a chicken egg). The first one hatched on February 27 and the animal care team is still monitoring eggs that could hatch in the coming weeks. The hatchlings will make their public debut on Wednesday, April 23, which is the 93rd anniversary of Mommy’s arrival at the Zoo. Stay tuned for details on their debut and for the chance to help the Zoo name them!

The babies are part of the AZA SSP breeding program to ensure the survival of this species and maintain a genetically diverse population. Western Santa Cruz Galapagos tortoises are listed as critically endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) with threats including human-wildlife conflict, the introduction of invasive species, and habitat loss. The last clutch of Western Santa Cruz Galapagos tortoises to hatch in an AZA accredited zoo was in 2019 at Riverbanks Zoo and Garden in South Carolina. Other zoos with breeding pairs of this species include San Diego Zoo, Zoo Miami and Honolulu Zoo.

Philadelphia Zoo is home to three adult Galapagos tortoises, male Abrazzo, females Mommy and Little Girl, and four hatchlings. Guests can visit the hatchlings inside the Reptile and Amphibian House starting April 23. The hatchlings will remain at the Zoo for at least five years. The Zoo will work with the AZA SSP to determine when and if the hatchlings will move to different facilities. The Zoo is also home to two giant Aldabra tortoises, Wilma and Betty.

Guests can also meet Mommy and Abrazzo during a Behind-the-Scenes experience at the Zoo. Tours are offered Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays at 2:00pm. Tickets are $65 dollars and do not include Zoo admission. Members receive discounts on tickets.

For updates on the hatchlings or to ADOPT a Galapagos tortoise to support their care, visit philadelphiazoo.org or follow the Zoo on social: Facebook: PhiladelphiaZoo; Instagram: @philadelphiazoo; Twitter: @phillyzoo.
