Five of NYC’s most iconic dance companies—Ballet Hispánico, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, American Ballet Theatre, New York City Ballet, and Dance Theatre of Harlem—return for the third annual BAAND Together Dance Festival, sharing the spotlight and an outdoor stage as a part of Lincoln Center’s second annual Summer for the City.
From July 25–29, audiences will be treated to exciting evenings of programming curated collaboratively by the artistic directors of the companies, featuring works that are quintessential of each company's style and brilliance, as well as the World Premiere of Pas de O’Farill by Pedro Ruiz, a new duet featuring dancers from Ballet Hispánico and New York City Ballet, commissioned by Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. All performances are free.
Each afternoon, one of the companies will bring its unique teaching style to campus with a daily Education Workshop. The series will offer a variety of teaching styles and dance forms, appropriate for all ages and abilities
In addition to the performances and workshops, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts will hold pop-up engagement tables before the July 26 performance, as part of the recently announced participatory planning process to help reimagine the Amsterdam Avenue side of its campus to create greater access. From one of today’s most sought-after choreographers comes a powerful and resonant work exploring an intriguing flamenco dance aspect: the conspicuous absence of physical partnering. While maintaining the integrity and hallmark passion of the genre, Annabelle Lopez Ochoa imagines an original and explosive movement language premised upon the theme of partnership and performed to flamenco guitar by Eric Vaarzon Morel. Línea Recta was commissioned in part by The Apollo Theater and Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival.
American Ballet Theatre – Other Dances by Jerome Robbins
Other Dances was created by Jerome Robbins specifically to showcase the legendary technique and artistry of Natalia Makarova and Mikhail Baryshnikov, who premiered the pas de deux in 1976, and it has since been performed by leading dancers in other major companies. Set to a waltz and four mazurkas by Frédéric Chopin, Other Dances features a series of Polish folk-inspired choreography that pays homage to Chopin’s romanticism and the purity of classical ballet technique.
Dance Theatre of Harlem – Nyman String Quartet No. 2 by Robert Garland
Set to Michael Nyman’s String Quartet No. 2, Robert Garland continues his signature exploration of the intersection of cultures that is contemporary America. Complex and witty, this sophisticated work shows off the unique capacity of the company’s artists to code-switch with abandon.
Pas de O'Farill by Pedro Ruiz
In tribute to the music of Latin Jazz sensation Arturo O'Farill, Pedro Ruiz takes on the classical ballet form and fuses it with the movement and essences of the Afro-Cuban diasporic legacy. The duet seeks to immerse the classical technique with the Latinx voice and expand the idea of what ballet is and can be.
Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater – excerpt of Dancing Spirit by Ronald K. Brown
Ronald K. Brown pays tribute to Judith Jamison’s profound influence with a work that echoes the title of her autobiography. Set to music by Duke Ellington, Wynton Marsalis and War, Brown’s evocative choreography uses movement from Cuba, Brazil and the United States to conjure dancing spirits who embody Jamison’s elegance, vision, dignity and generosity.
New York City Ballet – The Times Are Racing by Justin Peck
Justin Peck's The Times Are Racing is a sneaker ballet that sees its dancers in streetwear, drawing inspiration from a variety of dance styles while matching Dan Deacon’s electronic score with youthful impulse and vigor. The work is set to the last four tracks of Deacon’s expansive 2012 album, America, marks Peck's second collaboration with fashion designer Humberto Leon of Opening Ceremony and has lighting design by Peck’s frequent collaborator Brandon Stirling Baker.

The Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company classes aim to bring together dancers, choreographers and directors from around the world to create dance that transforms personal, environmental and metaphysical spaces. Advanced/Intermediate level professional or pre-professional dancers looking to push their boundaries with new dance experiences are encouraged to participate. The core program is based on Nai-Ni Chen’s Kinetic Spiral, a cross-cultural dance vocabulary that integrates the Chinese martial arts philosophy in TaiChi, QiGong with contemporary dance practices and ballet. In this series, guest artist Aloe Ao Liu will teach the Peacock Dance from Yunnan Province in China. Yunnan borders China and Laos, Burma and Thailand, a region with rich indigenous cultures and history. Ms. Liu has performed internationally with some of the most prestigious dance companies in the world.

New York City-based Daniel Gwirtzman Dance Company kicks off its 25th Anniversary Season this summer with the premiere of Everybody Can Dance, a 20-minute performance, followed by 40 minutes of social dance instruction with Daniel and the Company. The event is a part of Lincoln Center's series of outdoor children's storytimes, presented in partnership with The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts.
Whether you prefer a fast groove, slow slide, a silly wiggle, or a giant leap, we all have one thing in common--everybody can dance! Dance educator, dancer, and choreographer Daniel Gwirtzman and the Daniel Gwirtzman Dance Company presents choreography that explores shapes, patterns, and partnering, demonstrating that we all have what it takes to shuffle and skip and shimmy and shake.
Bring your family and friends of all ages to listen to the story and learn some new dance moves in this highly interactive event. The entrance to the garden is located on the north side of 62nd Street, between Columbus and Amsterdam. This event is Free and General Admission, first-come first-served. Just show up!
Presented as part of Lincoln Center’s Family Programming at Summer for the City, outdoor weekday morning Storytime sessions are intended to energize families and foster an early love for the arts. Curated by the Library for the Performing Arts, each Storytime event features narratives all ages will enjoy.
The name of the dance comes from a children's picture book of the same title by author Kara Novolio and illustrator Ruth-Mary Smith. The story is perfectly aligned with the Company's mission which has remained steadfast to its belief that everyone can dance. Free copies of the book will be given to the audience, which Daniel will narrate. The dance is a blend of the elegant and the quirky with a mash-up of over twenty pieces of popular music. From September 1 to October 31, 2023, Rail Explorers will introduce a new fall foliage package, partnered with The Otesaga Resort Hotel
Located four hours north of New York City and 1.5 hours west of Albany, Rail Explorers in Cooperstown is expanding its hours to operate seven days a week during the summer and fall seasons up until October 31, 2023. The Cooperstown Division features two track options, including the Milford Track, which is a 12-mile round trip that journeys north through farmlands and forests along the Susquehanna River, as well as the Charlotte Valley Express, which is an 8-mile Southern roundtrip also traveling alongside the river and going over the majestic 200-foot long Portlandville Trestle. Both journeys incorporate an electric pedal assist system for the entirety of the tours.
During the dog days of summer (August 1 – 31), and in advance of National Dog Day on August 26, 2023, Rail Explorers Cooperstown introduces a new pet-friendly offering, giving canine members of the family a complimentary dog biscuit, bandana, and dog mat for use during the ride. Pets ride for free, are limited to one pet per bike and weight restrictions do apply. Previous pet guests have included dogs, cats, lizards, parrots, and even ducks.
For those planning leaf peeping experiences this fall, Cooperstown is known for its vibrant fall foliage and natural landscape.
The Otesaga Resort Hotel’s new Rail Explorers Fall Foliage Package will be available from September 1 through October 31, 2023. It includes overnight accommodation for two, complimentary Wi-Fi and parking, and no resort fee. Guests will also receive two tickets to the Rail Explorers experience on either the Milford or Charlotte Valley tracks; two Rail Explorers Cooperstown T-shirts; and an Otesaga snack pack complete house-made granola bar and bottle of water for each rider, packaged in an Otesaga sling bag. Rail Explorers’ vehicles are custom-built and carefully engineered with steel wheels, hydraulic disc brakes, and the latest technology, focusing on safety, design, and ease of operation, so that riders of all ages and all physical ability levels can participate safely. Guests have included couples young and old, groups of friends, and multi-generational families. This commitment to inclusion prompted the design of a custom electric pedal assistance system to overcome the difficulty of pedaling uphill, and led to a frame construction strong enough to have no weight limit.
For both Cooperstown tours, there is a 15-to-20-minute break while the guides turn the bikes for the return trip. Railbikes in the Cooperstown Division are equipped with an electric pedal assist, which is used for the entirety of the tour.
Group, private and educational tours are also available. In addition, special tours with direct supervision are available for those who are visually or hearing impaired or with cognitive disabilities.
Rail Explorers Cooperstown’s depot is located in Milford, New York, approximately 15 minutes south of downtown Cooperstown at 136 E. Main St., Milford, NY 13807.
The Milford Track Tour starts at $95 for 2-person or $175 for 4-person, while Charlotte Valley Express Tours start at $90 for 2-person or $160 for 4-person. Free parking is available for Rail Explorers at the train station.

The Tank recently announced programming for their eco-forward festivals, TrashFest and DarkFest, as well as additional programming for LimeFest. All festivals will take place in-person at The Tank NYC (312 West 36th St New York, NY 10018), with select livestream options.
For 10 years, The Tank has hosted DarkFest - a week of shows that do not use conventional theatrical lighting in an effort to reexamine how we can make theater more sustainable. With the pandemic forcing their physical theater to close, they challenged that idea further with the first annual TrashFest in 2020. It is often difficult to wrestle with the environmental impact our daily lives and our work can have - especially in theater, where so many resources are needed to develop sets, props, and costumes that are only used for a short amount of time. Curated by Christian Ávila, TrashFest centers work that not only produces no waste, but reuses materials discarded as garbage, while DarkFest celebrates innovative performance that utilizes self-sufficient and alternative energy sources. Trashfest & DarkFest run July 31-August 6, 2023.
The Tank’s LimeFest invites new works by emerging artists and creative teams who identify as women, nonbinary, or gender non-conforming to make way for more gender parity in the performing arts. Produced by Emma Richmond (Simon and His Shoes, Modern Swimwear), LimeFest is a great way to show your work at The Tank, get to know us, and build community with a bunch of cool people. The festival, featuring two previously announced Core Productions – The Sitayana and Tia Talk – alongside Presented Works, is good, old-fashioned summer art fun. LimeFest runs August 4-27, 2023.
