the American Dance Festival
July 21-22, 2023
Ballet Hispánico, the nation’s largest Latinx cultural organization and one of America’s Cultural Treasures, returns to the American Dance Festival on July 21 & 22, 2023, at 7:30pm. Activities include a post-performance discussion on July 21 and a children’s matinee at 1:00pm on July 22, all taking place in the Reynolds Industries Theater at Duke University, Bryan University Science Center, 125 Science Drive, Durham, NC. The company will present a mixed bill curated by Artistic Director & CEO Eduardo Vilaro featuring repertory favorites and two new commissions. Tickets start at $12 and are available here.
In the ADF-commissioned Papagayos, Omar Román De Jesús follows a mischievous character who puppeteers humanity while simultaneously scoffing at the people’s plight. Feverishly, the Papagayo dissolves everyday agency in a solvent of absurdity. Checks and balances mutate, seemingly at random. This is a shapeshifting story of power, influence, and identity in the face of unauthorized control. Club Havana is Latin dancing at its best. New Sleep (Duet) (excerpt)
William Forsythe’s New Sleep (Duet) (1987) — a neoclassical master work scored by composer Thom Willems – demonstrates Forsythe’s ability to deconstruct classical vocabulary and maintain a strict precision without confining the physical expression within the movement. His work was long admired by Ballet Hispánico founder Tina Ramirez who, for many years, sought an opportunity for the Company to present one of his pieces. In honor of Tina, two members of the Company will perform an excerpt from New Sleep (Duet) at each performance. This production of New Sleep (Duet) was made possible by the generous contributions of Gaily and John Beinecke, and Dhuanne and Douglas Tansil.
Club Havana (2000)
One of the company’s signature works, this is Latin dancing at its best. The intoxicating rhythms of the conga, rumba, mambo, and cha cha are brought to life by choreographer Pedro Ruiz, himself a native of Cuba, as he imagined his very own “Club Havana.”
Línea Recta (2016)

The Tony Award-winning non-profit Broadway Advocacy Coalition (BAC) presents “What Now: Unplugged”, a music jam session meets community organizing brainstorm meets late night party. This event and fundraiser will take place at DROM on Monday, July 24 at 7:30 pm.
What Now: Unplugged, an interactive music experience that puts the power of what’s possible back in the hands of the people. With the help of the Liberation Band and Broadway Advocacy Coalition, industry members will come together to create original music (grooves) that tells a new story of where we want the theater industry to go. Inspired by the works of George Bernard Shaw, Project Shaw is a special series of play readings that aim to provoke peaceful discussion and activism. Shaw’s Pygmalion will be presented at Symphony Space’s Leonard Nimoy Thalia Theatre (2537 Broadway at 95th Street) on Monday July 24, 2023, at 7PM. Pygmalion, Shaw’s most famous and beloved play, as well as the basis for the musical My Fair Lady, is a rollicking comedy that reminds us of the importance of being as fully connected to both our heads and hearts as we can, and to live our lives as fully as possible. A celebrated professor of phonetics makes a wager that he can pass a bedraggled Cockney flower girl off as a duchess at an ambassador’s garden party by giving her the tools of education. But, before the lessons are over, she has become his teacher, as well: helping him learn to face his emotional self as an aware human. The play is a sharp lampoon of the rigid British class system of the day and a commentary on women’s independence.

Gingold Theatrical Group (David Staller, Founding Artistic Director) announced today that their 2022 production of Candida, one of George Bernard Shaw’s most popular plays, will be available for streaming Tuesday July 25-Sunday July 30, 2023. Directed by David Staller, Bernard Shaw’s Candida began previews on October 5, 2022, and opened October 25, for a run through November 19, 2022, at Theatre Two in Theatre Row and was nominated for the 2023 Off Broadway Alliance Award for Best Play Revival.
CANDIDA: The Romcom That Started It All! This incredibly taut romantic comedy by Bernard Shaw will be reset from London 1895 to Harlem 1929. The Reverend James Morell and his wife Candida live a comfortable life until the young poet, Marchbanks, is taken into their home and challenges everything they’ve built their lives upon. It’s a time of global upheaval as six characters come together on one tumultuous day to redefine not only who they are but also how to launch into their futures in a more fully self-aware way. Written as a lighthearted response to Ibsen’s A Doll’s House, this short but pithy play races along in ever-surprising ways. This is also the play that later inspired the Robert Anderson play, Tea and Sympathy.

Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts (LCPA) today announced details for Korean Arts Week presented by SK Group, a celebration of Korean cultural traditions as part of Summer for the City.
Featuring more than a dozen free events, Korean Arts Week celebrates the amazing depth and breadth of Korean culture, bringing together the past, present, and future of Korean arts, in collaboration with the Korean Cultural Center New York, the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts, Film at Lincoln Center, and the New York Asian Film Festival.
The series showcases some of the country’s most distinctive talents with dance performances, a K-Indie Music Night, visual art exhibitions, iconic DJs, a feature program with the Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra, wellness events, family programs and much more!

One Dance (Il-mu) has been described as “a wonderful blend of traditional and contemporary dance that reflects the times we live in.” It’s a modern interpretation of ceremonial dance from traditional Jongmyo Jeryeak (Korean court music), designated as “Intangible Cultural Heritage” by both the Korean government and UNESCO. A performance of “Il-mu,” originally played in a formation of several rows and columns of dancers, is recreated by Korean traditional dance choreographer Hyejin Jung (Artistic Director of the Seoul Metropolitan Dance Theatre) in collaboration with modern dance choreographers Sung Hoon Kim and Jae Duk Kim. A classic yet contemporary reinterpretation of ceremonial Korean traditional dance, the performance features a large formation and picturesque stage that creates a sense of grandeur, harmony, and balance. Kuho Jung, a Creative Director who has made a name for himself in fashion and the arts, offers his audience a compelling mise-en-scène that captures the essence of K-Arts in a feast for the eyes and the soul.

A high-concept disaster film and then some, The Host took inspiration from a real incident from 2000, in which a Korean mortician was ordered by the U.S. military to illegally dump formaldehyde and gives ample space to shrewdly satirize national and foreign bodies in crisis—from inept and uncaring governments to self-righteous protesters. Bounce to K-pop spun by Gamma Vibes, a New York–based electronic producer, DJ, and vibraphonist from Korea who started learning the piano at five and developed a passion for percussion at fifteen. She became fascinated with playing jazz vibraphone before graduating from Berklee College of Music in 2011. Gamma Vibes returns to Lincoln Center after performances in 2021 and 2022, presented by the Korean Cultural Center. In January 2022, she debuted inside the Metaverse for Samsung’s “837x” grand opening, and last March, she performed live at South by Southwest. She has worked with such legendary artists as two-time Grammy Award winner Richard Stoltzman, two-time Latin Grammy Award winner Eddie Gomez, and legendary drummer Steve Gadd. This year's series of concerts from the Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra kicks off with a free outdoor concert in Damrosch Park as part of Summer for the City’s Korean Arts Week, conducted by Louis Langrée. The opening program includes an orchestral arrangement of the Korean folk song Arirang, Soo Yeon Lyuh's Dudurim with the composer also performing on haegeum, and Mozart’s Concerto No. 2 for Flute featuring celebrated Korean flutist and Orchestra member Jasmine Choi. Beethoven's thrilling Symphony No. 7 rounds out the program.

Gray by Silver is a four-piece combo of piano, vocals, percussion, strings, and junggeum bamboo flute. The band finds equal inspiration from contemporary western classical, indigenous folk song, modern jazz, and new age instrumentals. Their latest album, 2021's The Song of Ethnic, features intricately rendered arrangements of traditional vernacular tunes, Asian nursery rhymes and original compositions by the group's lead pianist HanBin Lee. Easily accessible and beautifully executed, Gray by Silver presents music that is unmistakable in its Korean identity but global in its aspirations. The quartet's U.S. debut is part of Lincoln Center's continuing celebration of the spectrum of Korean performing arts, Korean Arts Week.

This summer, New Yorkers will be invited to celebrate Korean culture, art, cuisine, fashion, and music at Rockefeller Center. The celebration will culminate in a week of festivities which will be held from July 19 to 23 and will include special events, offerings, and pop-ups in collaboration with retailers at Rockefeller Center. Beginning June 8, Johyun Gallery, the leading art gallery in Busan, Korea, will present Origin, Emergence, Return which will focus on emerging and younger Korean artists.

PUBLIK PRIVATE
A NEW PLAY

IN PHILADELPHIA AND NEW YORK THIS SUMMER
After a year of partnership discussions, The Sol Project and PlayPenn are proud to announce a joint project that serves the missions of both organizations. The organizations will partner on two developmental readings of the new bilingual play Publik Private by eppchez yo-sí yes.
The Sol Project and PlayPenn began discussions about a collaboration in 2022, after Associate Artistic Director Santiago Iacinti participated in that year’s SolFest. As part of The Sol Project’s efforts to support Latiné voices in the theater across the country, The Sol Project is excited to work with the vibrant theater community in Philadelphia for the first time and support the work of a Philadelphia-based playwright, eppchez yo-sí yes, and their new play Publik Private.
Some private things have to be made public if we want to live—in the way that our bodies become public when we go outside, where we will be perceived. Publik Private grapples with the past, as the protagonist attempts to reconcile their ancestors’ own gender expansiveness with the roles those same ancestors played in erasing queerness through colonization and genocide.
Through collaboration with PlayPenn and The Sol Project, this play has been expanded from a solo performance piece to a three-person cast. The first reading will receive a week-long, 29-hour development process. After the reading in Philadelphia, a post-show conversation will take place with the playwright and audience for questions and feedback that can be incorporated into the play in advance of the New York reading.
The first reading will take place in The Proscenium Theatre at The Drake (302 S. Hicks Street. Philadelphia, PA 19102) at 2 p.m. on July 23. The team includes Santiago Iacinti (Director), Santiago Tonauac Castro (Dramaturg), Melody Wong (Stage Manager), Brenna Geffers (Casting), Xavier Chenet-Smith (Performer 1), Han Van Sciver (Performer 2), Ximena Violante (Performer 3), and Gabriela Pereira Dupont (Stage Directions). The reading will be open to the public free of charge and seats can be reserved now (RSVP HERE).
The second reading is set for late August as part of the sixth annual SolFest, The Sol Project's Latiné Theater Festival, produced in partnership with Pregones/Puerto Rican Traveling Theater. The reading will take place in Pregones/PRTT’s space in Midtown Manhattan (304 West 47th Street). The annual festival features new work by Latiné playwrights that reflects the diaspora of Latinidad. Santiago Iancinti will return to direct. Cast and ticket information for the New York reading will be announced at a later date.

During this event, Dr. De Beukelaer will delve into his 150-day transatlantic voyage covering 14,000 nautical miles aboard the 1920 gaff schooner Avontuur, which has been traversing the Atlantic effectively emission-free since 2016, while carrying goods sustainably. He will also shed light on the efforts made by the shipping industry to reduce carbon emissions, set against the backdrop of an escalating climate crisis.
Moreover, Dr. De Beukelaer will share invaluable insights gained from the recent negotiations held by the International Maritime Organization––a specialized agency of the United Nations responsible for safeguarding shipping, ensuring its safety and security, and curbing marine and atmospheric pollution caused by ships.
Registration is encouraged for this free event but walk ups will be accommodated as possible. A Q&A, book signing, and complimentary toast with wine or sparkling water will follow the presentation.

the wild project will present the 2nd annual Sound Stage this July and August. Sound Stage is a performance initiative that gives the stage back to the community, keeping the spirit of live entertainment strong in the post-pandemic era. There’s a certain quality that intimate shows offer, and there’s power when audiences can actually see and feel the artists up close at the wild project's 89-seat theater. This initiative is about the communal connection between people and artmaking. New York City is home to an amazing artist community, and that community has uniquely talented people, some of whom you may know, and some of whom you definitely want to find out about.
Sound Stage @ wild project, launched in 2022, annually presents intimate performances between July & August. This year’s lineup features musicians, comedians, and poets from around the country. The artists were selected by Brooklyn based artist and organizer Cyrus Aaron, the curator-in-residence for Sound Stage.
