ANNOUNCES THE FIFTH YEAR OF
THE ERIC H. WEINBERGER AWARD FOR EMERGING LIBRETTISTS
SUBMISSIONS OPEN SEPTEMBER 19-DECEMBER 2, 2022
Amas Musical Theatre (Donna Trinkoff, Artistic Producer) today announced the fifth year of The Eric H. Weinberger Award for Emerging Librettists, a juried cash and production grant to be given annually to support the early work and career of a deserving musical theatre librettist. The Award commemorates the life and work of playwright/librettist Eric H. Weinberger (1950-2017), who was a Drama Desk Award nominee for Best Book of a Musical (Wanda’s World), and the playwright/librettist of Class Mothers ’68, that earned Pricilla Lopez a Drama Desk Award nomination.
The winner will receive $2,000 to help pay cost-of-living expenses. The winning musical will receive development assistance in the 2024 New Works Development Program of Amas Musical Theatre, which is administering the Award. The development assistance culminates in the work being rehearsed and performed by New York theatre professionals in an Amas Lab production. Amas was the development home for several of Mr. Weinberger’s musicals and produced the World Premiere of Wanda’s World and the New York Premiere of Tea for Three.
Submissions will open on September 19, 2022, and will close December 2, 2022. All submissions must be sent through an online application that can be found at Eric H. Weinberger Award For Emerging Librettists. Only one submission per playwright/librettist will be accepted. In the midst of the COVID-19 crisis, the Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company has established a new dance institute through Zoom, The Bridge. The Institute’s aim is to bring together dancers, choreographers and directors around the world to experience the master teachers of color whose practices are embedded in the community and are focused on advancing the art of dance that transform the personal, environmental and metaphysical spaces. Interested dancers can join the class by registering here.
As a virtual dance institute, The Bridge will invite world renowned as well as up and coming dancers and choreographers to come to guest teach the class. Advanced/Intermediate level professional or pre-professional dancers who are looking to explore beyond their own boundaries and looking for new dance experiences are encouraged to participate. The core program is based on Nai-Ni Chen’s Kinetic Spiral, which is a cross-cultural dance vocabulary that integrates the Chinese martial arts philosophy in TaiChi with contemporary dance practices she studied in America. Guest artists will cover a wide range of folk and classical dance styles.

A powerful and entertaining take on the last two years, The Covid-19 Variations: A Piano Drama is a unique and outrageously funny film and concert in one with a cast of characters including everyone from Donald Trump, Vladimir Putin, and Elton John to Kanye West and even the British royal family—because everyone has lived through Covid. Olivier Award–winning Richard Thomas composed The Covid-19 Variations during the earliest days of the pandemic for Works & Process Artists (WPA) Virtual Commissions. Inspired by his music, BAFTA-winning artist and director Alison Jackson has created 19 short films for the Covid-19 Variations, drawn from fake reality. These films ponder the question of how we can tell what is real or fake using celebrity lookalikes and commemorate life in the time of Covid.
