I started this blog with one daughter, kept it up with the other, to spend time together doing something we enjoyed.
However, things change and people evolve. My daughters are older, busier, and not as interested in writing.
From now on this blog will be mostly mom with occasional contributions from my daughters and maybe even my husband.
Nothing else will change. We'll still focus on sharing fun places to go, fun things to do, and more, and we would  still love to hear your views too

Theater Thursday - Malapert Love

We received complimentary tickets to Malapert Love for review purposes. Any and all opinions expressed here are our own.

What: Malapert Love

Where: The Tank
             312 W. 36th St.
             New York, NY

Who: Recommended for Ages 18 and Up

When: Through November 9, 2025

Malapert Love is a Shakespearean comedy told through a modern, inclusive lens. Although the story, dialogue, and costumes could come right out of Shakespeare, the show features a gay couple, a lesbian couple, and a mixed-race couple. The plot revolves around unrequited love and a series of mismatched pairs. Predictably, all is sorted out in the end. However, the trip to get there is a joyous one as the story, characters, and performances are all delightful. All in all, it's a fun show that feels both new and familiar at once in the best of ways.

And that's our view. For more about Malapert Love or to purchase tickets, visit

Tune in Saturday for Still More Theater Saturday.

Where-To-Go Wednesday - Dress, Dreams & Desire: Fashion & Psychoanalysis

What: Dress, Dreams & Desire: Fashion & Pyschoanalysis

Where: Museum at FIT
             227 W. 27th St.
             New York, NY

Who: Recommended for Ages 17 and Up

When: Through January 24, 2026

The exhibit, Dress, Dreams & Desire: Fashion & Psychoanalysis, explores the relationship between fashion and the unconscious. The history of fashion is explored through the lens of psychoanalysis. It covers both the way basic psychoanalytic concepts have been reflected in styles of dress, and how this has changed over time.

The exhibit includes approximately 100 items of clothing. Designers featured include John Galliano for Christian Dior, Jean Paul Gaultier, Vivienne Westwood, and many more. Items on display include Elsa Shiapererlli's mirrored jacket, Moschino's chocolate bar dress, and more. Other items on display include the Versace safety pin dress that Elizabeth Hurley wore to a film premiere in 1994 and the green plunge Donatella Versace dress that Jennifer Lopez wore to the 2000 Academy Awards.

And that's our view. The exhibit is free to visit, as are all exhibitions at the Museum at FIT. For more information, visit www.fitnyc.edu/museum/exhibitions.

Tips for Tuesday - Books: Bringing Song and Dance to the Screen: Directors of Golden Age Musicals of Hollywood & Sonora; Movie: Beneath the Light

We may have been given complimentary copies and/or access for review purposes to any books, products, and/or any other visual or audio media mentioned below. Any and all opinions expressed here are our own.

Books: Bringing Dance to the Screen: Directors of Hollywood's Golden Age Musicals

                                                                                   &

                                                                               Sonora

Today, we recommend Bringing Song and Dance to the Screen: Directors of Golden Age Musicals of Hollywood by  Thomas Hischak. This book is a comprehensive review of musicals from the early talkies through the late 1950s, widely considered the Golden Age of Hollywood musicals, and the auteurs who brought them to life. It ranges from more well-known directors that most people are likely to be familiar with, like Vincente Minnelli and Gene Kelly, to more obscure ones that many people might not be familiar with, like Alan Crosland and Harry Beaumont. It covers directors who directed only one or two musicals, including Victor Fleming and James Whale, as well as directors who regularly directed musicals, including Norman Taurog and Roy Del Ruth.

The book thoroughly examines each director and their work. It provides an extremely in-depth look at their background and overall career, not just their work on musicals. Information covered includes the films they worked on, including their most significant works besides musicals, their specialties, and what they brought to the genre, if anything. Each musical is discussed in great detail, which includes the plot, the stars, and the box office success or lack thereof of the film, among other things. If you love movie musicals and want to know more about them and/or their directors, this book is a terrific source.

Today, we recommend Sonora by Jenni L. Walsh. This book is the novelization of the true story of Sonora Webster Carver, who dove with the horses in Atlantic City from the 1930s through the 1970s. Her story was also previously told in the 1991 movie Wild Horses Can't Be Broken. The book offers a more in-depth look into her story and is based more on her actual autobiography and therefore, is truer to life. It takes Sonora from a brave young lady answering a newspaper ad and setting out on her own for a life of adventure to an equally courageous woman continuing to engage in the job she loves despite the added danger of a serious handicap.

The book is both inspiring and deeply affecting. It is romantic as well, detailing the love story that develops between Sonora and her boss, Al. Although their romance is extremely slow-burning, which may bother some people, it is really sweet and builds nicely, making the eventual payoff feel even more satisfying. There are also plenty of heartwarming family vibes, both real and found. Plus, the story is fast-paced and exciting. If you want to vicariously experience a daring life of adventure, this book is a great choice.

Movie: Beneath the Light

Today, we are recommending Beneath the Light. A young man with a mysterious past gets a job at a lighthouse on an isolated island. He begins to experience strange apparitions and is convinced he knew the lighthouse keeper's daughter, even though she died tragically the year he was born. This film moves along at a fairly slow pace, but the conclusion is exciting and completely unexpected. It is also violent and gory and completely inappropriate for young children or anyone who has an issue with that sort of thing.

And that's our view. Bringing Song and Dance to the Screen: Directors of Golden Age Musicals of Hollywood was published on October 16. Sonora was published today. Beneath the Light is now available digitally for purchase or rental.

Tune in tomorrow for Where-To-Go Wednesday.

More Theater Monday - Sally Spectre the Musical

We were given complimentary tickets to Sally Spectre the Musical for review purposes. Any and all opinions expressed here are our own.

What:Sally Spectre the Musical

Where: Urban Stages/30th St. Theatre
             259 W. 30th St.
             New York, NY

Who: Recommended for Ages 8 and Up

When: Through November 1, 2025

A show about a ghost should either be scary or more farcical and funny. Unfortunately, this new show, about a young murdered girl doomed to haunt her own childhood bedroom, is neither. It has moments of both, but is mostly neither. There are a few moments of particularly scariness, making the show extremely unsuitable for very young children or sensitive older children, such as when a group of demon-like creatures suddenly bursts into the room, but it is generally just pretty bland.

The show is a musical, but none of the songs are memorable. The story is confusing. You don't really know what is going on, who most of the characters are, or what their purposes in the story are until almost the end of the show, but not in an exciting way that keeps you intrigued, more in a way that interferes with the enjoyment of the show. They are not interestingly mysterious. They just don't make sense.

The highlight of the show, by far, is Helen Floersh's performance in the lead role of Sally Spectre. She does an excellent job of portraying the innocence and naivety of a child cut down in her prime. Not for one minute do you feel like the character is not a young child. Her performance alone makes this show worth seeing.

And that's our view. For more about Sally Spectre the Musical or to purchase tickets, visit themightyorbits.com/sally_spectre/index.html

Dutchman is an emotionally charged and highly symbolic version of the Adam and Eve story, set on a subway car, was the first critical success for playwright/activist LeRoi Jones, aka Amiri Baraka. The Slave takes place in the middle of a revolution as an examination of racial tension in contemporary America. The Slave is the story of Walker Vessles, a Black man who visits the home of his ex-wife, a white woman now married to a white professor, to retrieve his children.

Over the course of one evening, Negeen and Noah reckon with the person they’ve lost, the people they've become, and the versions of each other they are seeking to rediscover.

8) The Harvest

As old rivalries reignite and grief simmers beneath the surface, the siblings must navigate their individual desires, regrets, and responsibilities. A fragile unity begins to form—until an unexpected shift throws everything into question. In its intimate, character-driven storytelling, The Harvest explores what it truly means to come home—and what happens when that home can no longer hold you.

This is not the Hollywood version of Montana glamorized in Yellowstone, but a more honest portrayal of a rural America. The production’s cast elaborates on this:

10) The Horses at the Window

The Horses At The Window is a striking play by acclaimed French author Matei Vişniec — the literary heir to Ionesco and Beckett. A story of love and war, men and women, survival and hope. What has happened to them? What awaits them? Can we endure in this world, and how do we move forward? Come and witness the answers unfold on stage. This is tragifarce at its most powerful — where laughter breaks through tears, and hope emerges from ruins. A genre where the comic and the tragic are forever entwined.

What follows is a chaotic journey through reality, myth, and magic as A-Poh travels through now and the great beyond in a last-ditch effort to preserve what’s left of her family, legacy, and sanity. 17) Vape! The Grease Parody

Vape! The Grease Parody is a hilariously unhinged spoof of the iconic and timeless musical Grease. The show pokes loving fun at all of the wonderful moments, sexual innuendos, outrageous characters, rivalries and secret romances from the original. The hair products may have changed, but the drama, the rivalries, and the thirst for hallway clout remain timeless. It's the musical you know and love... but dragged through a cloud of strawberry-scented vapor and a TikTok filter.. It's the show that you want (…Ooh! Ooh! Ooh, honey!)

Amanda Selwyn Dance Theatre announces its October open rehearsal, scheduled for October 29, 2025 at 6PM at 412 Broadway, 2nd Floor, New York, NY, 10013. Join the artists and board of Amanda Selwyn Dance Theatre for an intimate look at the creative process of their developing work, Exposed. The free open rehearsal will be followed by a wine and cheese reception.

The Full Theatrical Premiere of Exposed is slated for April 2027 at New York Live Arts. Exposed explores a raw relentlessness human drive to climb — physically, emotionally, and spiritually and the vulnerability, vision, and courage required to transcend and rise. Throughout the piece, the dancers will transform the stage into a dynamic playground of semi-transparent steps and screens that conceal, distort, confound, beckon, and demand resilience. The dancers move from being constrained and hidden in the maze of obstacles to an unburdening, soaring with a potential of growth.

27) AMERICAN CLASSICAL ORCHESTRA PERFORMS VIRTUOSI VIOLINI

AT MANHATTAN’S MADISON AVENUE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH

ON OCTOBER 28, 2025

A Program of Baroque Violin Concerti Performed on Period Instruments

Featuring Violinists Chloe Fedor, Augusta McKay Lodge,

Aisslinn Nosky, and Edson Scheid

The American Classical Orchestra (ACO) continues its 41st season with a performance of virtuoso violin concerti from the Baroque era, led by Founder and Artistic Director Thomas Crawford. The concert, which takes place at the Madison Avenue Presbyterian Church on Tuesday, October 28, at 7:30 PM, showcases the golden age of Italian string composition and the violin’s capacity for both technical brilliance and emotional expression with works by Vivaldi, Albinoni, Tartini, Brescianello, and J.S. Bach. It features a roster of critically acclaimed violinists, including Chloe Fedor, Augusta McKay Lodge, Aisslinn Nosky, and Edson Scheid.

American Classical Orchestra

Antonio Vivaldi: Concerto for Four Violins in B Minor, RV 580

Tomaso Albinoni: Violin Concerto Op. 10 No. 12 in B-flat Major

Giuseppe Tartini: Violin Concerto in E Minor

Giuseppe Antonio Brescianello: Violin Concerto in G Major, Bre9

J.S. Bach: Concerto for Two Violins in D Minor, BWV 1043

In the early 17th century, Italy enjoyed a flourishing industry of building string instruments, paired with an abundance of skilled musicians to play them. Composers of the era were motivated to write works that pushed the limits of technique.
Vivaldi’s Concerto for Four Violins was part of a group of 12 concerti published under the title L’estro armónico, and performed by the students of a music school for orphaned girls, where Vivaldi taught. Albinoni wrote nine collections of instrumental works during his lifetime, including 59 concerti. His Concerto Op. 10 No. 12 in B-flat Major was written for five parts: a solo violin, two violins, viola, cello, and harpsichord. A gifted violinist in his own right, Tartini was critical of composers who wrote both instrumental and vocal music. His Concerto in E Minor is an example of the nearly 350 works he wrote, almost exclusively for instruments. Little is known about composer and violinist Giuseppe Antonio Brescianello prior to his arrival in 1715 as a violinist for the Elector of Bavaria in Germany, where he was eventually named Oberkapellmeister by Duke Karl Eugen. His Violin Concerto in G Major is performed by Chloe Fedorprincipal violin of the Grammy Award-winning ensemble Apollo’s Fire. Bach was a fan of Vivaldi and very interested in his Italian style of concerto writing. His Concerto for Two Violins reflects certain Italian Baroque characteristics, such as its three-movement structure (fast – slow – fast). The four solo Baroque violinists in this performance showcase the “...plush, seductive tone’’ (New York Times) of Chloe Fedor; a frequent concertmaster of the ensemble Les Arts Florissants, Augusta McKay Lodge; Aisslinn Nosky, concertmaster of Boston’s Handel and Haydn Society; and Edson Scheid, who “amazes with his seemingly superhuman technique...” (Fanfare Magazine).

29) Brooklyn Academy of Music

Upcoming Event:

Martha@BAM - The 1963 Interview

More than a theatrical work or dance performance, Martha@BAM—The 1963 Interview is an act of artistic resurrection. At the heart of the performance is Martha Graham, the visionary choreographer who changed the course of modern dance during the first half of the 20th century. Making their BAM debut, Richard Move embodies Graham in all her complexity and elegance, faithfully recreating an interview held on stage at the 92nd Street Y on March 31, 1963, in which she discussed the meaning and method behind her most iconic roles. Appearing opposite Move is Tony Award-winning actress and playwright Lisa Kron, portraying dance critic and interviewer Walter Terry.

A highly regarded choreographer and performer in their own right, Move was already known for their uncanny performances as Graham when the 92nd Street Y’s Harkness Dance Center presented them with a recording of the 1963 interview. Joined by Kron and two former Graham company dancers, Catherine Cabeen and PeiJu Chien-Pott, demonstrating Graham’s dance vocabulary, Move lovingly re-enacts the historic event, bringing to life the passionate presence of an iconic American artist.

30) Brooklyn Children's Museum Honors Ancestors with Día de los Muertos Celebration

Community comes together to remember loved ones through dance, art, storytelling, and a shared ofrenda

On November 1, Brooklyn Children's Museum invites families to celebrate Día de los Muertos, honoring the lives and memories of those who have passed. The Day of the Dead festival brings together Mexican and Guatemalan traditions through dance, storytelling, kite-making, and a community ofrenda where families gather to remember their loved ones.

At the heart of the festival sits a community ofrenda designed by Brooklyn-based artist Benjamin Rojas (Mincho Vega) and artists Johann and Adalhi Armendáriz-Mittnacht. Families can leave offerings, share photographs, and add their own tributes to loved ones at this collaborative altar that grows during the course of the day.

Calpulli Mexican Dance Company brings traditional Mexican folkloric dance to life with vibrant costumes and rhythms, while Karina Onofre presents bilingual puppet shows about Día de los Santos celebrations in Guatemala. Artist Yadira De La Riva leads storytelling sessions that teach children about ofrendas and honoring ancestors. Throughout the day, DJ Farbeon spins Latin, World, Soul, Funk, House, and Hip Hop.

Families can craft giant barrilete kites with Mayan artist Ixmucane Artisan in the ColorLab studio, learning about this Guatemalan tradition of honoring and communicating with ancestors. On the rooftop, an arts and crafts marketplace showcases local Latinx artists while Taqueria El Patron serves food throughout the day.

In addition to the November 1 celebration, the Museum will present a Corn Dance Workshop with Cetiliztli Nauhcampa on Thursday, October 30 from 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm. Dancers will perform the corn harvest cycle through traditional Aztec ceremonial dance as a prelude to the weekend's festivities.

On Saturday, November 1st, The Green-Wood

Cemetery invites neighbors of all ages to its annual Día de Muertos Family Celebration, an afternoon featuring live music, dance performances, crafts, family-friendly activities, and food from local vendors.

Observed throughout Mexico and parts of Latin America, Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead) is a celebration of life and death rooted in Indigenous Mesoamerican tradition. Communities honor ancestors through food, music, and ofrendas, altars adorned with offerings to the departed.

Throughout the event, visitors are invited to contribute to Reposo y Recuerdo (Rest and Remember), a large-scale community altar by artist Laura Anderson Barbata in Green-Wood’s Historic Chapel. The immersive installation fills the space with handwoven hammocks crafted in collaboration with Mexican artisans, cascades of colorful papel picado and paper marigold garlands, hand-painted calaveras (skulls), and a space for visitors to contribute personal offerings. The altar is on display from October 11th through November 16th.

The event will feature:

  • Performances by Calpulli Mexican Dance Company, an all-ages folkloric dance group; Mariachi group Mariachi Huella Mexicana; and spiritual dancers Cetiliztli Nauhcampa; as well as a reading by Luisa Navarro, author of Mexico’s Day of the Dead, and a live DJ set.

  • Food from local vendors, including Maria’s Bistro, Siempre, Don Paco, and La Snackeria. With generous support from Borough President Antonio Reynoso and Ponce Bank, free snacks from our vendors will be offered starting at 4pm while supplies last, followed by food available for purchase.

Decorate the iconic holiday emblem with colorful paper flowers, ribbons, and sparkles fit for a celebration of life. • Decorate a plantable marigold seed skull, a bioplastic calavera that can bloom into real marigolds at home, with Genspace.

    • And more hands-on fun for all ages.

Triumph Over Evil: Battle of the Exorcists Hits
U.S. Theatres Nationwide on October 30

New Film from Fathom Entertainment and Goya Producciones Shows Ways
To Fight the Rise of Evil and Features Never-Before-Seen Commentary from
World-Renowned Vatican Exorcist Fr. Gabriele Amorth and is Endorsed by the International Association of Exorcists

Who is the devil, and how does he operate? What are his weapons? How do you protect yourself and loved ones from demonic attacks? What is an exorcism? Triumph Over Evil: Battle Of The Exorcists is a new docudrama that aims to answer these and other questions.  Arriving in U.S. theatres on October 30 for one-night only, a Fathom Entertainment and Goya Producciones release, this is the first authoritative documentary to delve into the various aspects of demonic possession and exorcism while showcasing the escalation and significance as well as the role of Catholic priesthood and Mary, the Mother of God, in the battle against evil.

Tickets are on at Fathom Entertainment, with select theatres also offering the docudrama in Spanish. Watch the official trailer here.

The powerful docudrama was the idea of a former atheist and Italian film director Giovanni Ziberna and his wife Valeria Baldan, the directors and founders of Sine Sole Cinema, whose conversion story after years of being anti-Catholic makes this release even more remarkable. Ziberna and his wife experienced transformative conversions that helped them to better understand God, Satan and spiritual battle that led them into the Roman Catholic Church and to create a documentary on exorcism. Ziberna was invited to assist in the ministry of exorcism, where he served as a first-hand witness. This experience further proved the reality of this ministry that contradicted everything previously depicted by Hollywood.
