I started this blog with one daughter, kept it up with the other, to spend time together doing something we enjoyed.
However, things change and people evolve. My daughters are older, busier, and not as interested in writing.
From now on this blog will be mostly mom with occasional contributions from my daughters and maybe even my husband.
Nothing else will change. We'll still focus on sharing fun places to go, fun things to do, and more, and we would  still love to hear your views too

Theater Thursday - Buena Vista Social Club

We were given complimentary tickets to Buena Vista Social Club for review purposes. Any and all opinions expressed here are our own.

What: Buena Vista Social Club

Where: Atlantic Theatre
             Linda Gross Theater
             336 W. 20th St.
             New York, NY

Who: Recommended for Ages 12 and Up

When: Through January 28, 2024

To say that Buena Vista Social Club is a musical based on the documentary regarding the making of the album of the same name, doesn't even begin to capture the essence of this beautiful musical. It is not only about the music but about the legendary artists who created it. It is a story about the artistic drive to make art no matter the circumstances of one's birth or the colors of one's skin.

Of course, the original album was in Spanish as is the music in the show. However, even if you do not speak a word of Spanish, the language of music is universal. You can still feel the heartfelt emotion of the singers' voices and get lost in the beauty of the music. Plus, the dialogue of the show is mostly in English. You will still be able to fully follow the story. Thus. this is the perfect vehicle to immerse yourself in the waters of bilingual performance if you haven't done so before.

The show is filled with overwhelming talent from start to finish. The acting and musical performances are just exquisite. However, special mention must be made of one performer, in particular, Kenya Browne who plays young Omara. She was discovered in Mexico and had never acted before. She is quite an amazing discovery and will surely do plenty of great things in the future. You will definitely want to see her get her start, and you definitely won't want to miss this lovely musical!

And that's our view. For more about Buena Vista Social Club or to purchase tickets, visit atlantictheater.org/production/buena-vista-social-club.
