What: An Axemas Story
Where: Player's Theatre

Who: Recommended for Ages 17 and Up
When: Through December 17, 2023
An Axemas Story is a musical about trees that are mysteriously being murdered. However, it is not really scary at all. It is mostly just sappy but not in a fun way and at times, it is extremely inappropriate. We don't think we ever needed to see trees doing the kinds of things they are doing in this musical. Needless to say, the show is definitely not suitable for children.
There are some decent songs in the show which if they weren't about trees, you might even want to hear again The singing voices are mostly nice as well. The acting given the material they are working with is mostly over-the-top. Sometimes, it is amusing. Sometimes, it isn't.
The 80s setting is fun at first. However, all the references quickly become tedious and boring. It seems like they are trying to shoehorn as many 80s references into the script as they possibly can which makes them seem too forced and unfunny.
The most relatable character in the story is Little Paulette, who is being told the story by her grandfather. She is clearly a captive audience and seems bored and unimpressed by the story she is being told. We feel the same way.

Fluffy the Pine is another musical about trees but this one is more suitable for younger children. Some of the story may go over their heads, but there isn't really anything too inappropriate. Although the show is suitable for most ages, it is hard to know exactly who it is meant for. It seems a little too sophisticated for kids and a little too simplistic for adults.
A lot is going on in this story, and sometimes, it can be a bit confusing. Still, there is a good lesson behind it all. However, the message can be a bit confusing as well. Is it that we shouldn't put junk in our bodies (in this show the characters are actually eating plastic) or that we should appreciate nature, or perhaps both?
This show is also full of over-the-top acting, but the characters they are playing are very quirky which makes it kind of fitting. The singing voices are quite pretty though or at least some of them are. The actress who plays the character of Fluffy just has an okay voice. but it would probably be more impressive if she didn't have so much trouble hitting her high notes. Her acting is good though. She is not as over-the-top as some of the others.
There is some nice music in the show, but not all the songs are equally good. The more heartfelt songs are better than the others. In fact, overall, the show would be better with a little less sap and a little more heart.
