Make Me Gorgeous! tells the often-forgotten story of LGBTQ+ pioneer, Kenneth Marlowe. Over the course of his extraordinary life, Marlowe was at various times a hairdresser to the stars, an author, a hustler, the madame of a gay prostitute ring, and so much more. Later in life, he even transitioned into a woman named Kate. However, despite all this, Marlowe doesn't even have a Wikipedia page.
The show is a crazy romp through the high and lowlights of Marlowe's life. The title and only role in the play is gloriously played by Wade McCollum. McCollum fiercely inhabits the part and yet he is so in the present moment that he is easily able to delightfully ad-lib and banter with the audience throughout the show making the whole evening even more fun for all.
Although the show is not a musical, there are plenty of light moments of song and dance throughout as McCollum relives some of the happier parts of Marlowe's life journey. There are also much darker moments, however. Some, such as, when he relives the attack he suffered in the army, may even trigger some people. On the whole, though, the show is an interesting odyssey through a remarkable life.
