On Location Tours

(In front of Starbucks)
New York, NY
Who: All ages
When: Through January 2, 2023
There's no place like New York for the holidays. The stores are all lit up with sparkling lights and massive decorations. The department store windows are so creatively designed. The giant Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center is a wonder to behold. If you want to take it all in, traveling around on foot and pushing your way through the crowds can be just as exhausting as it sounds. Riding around in one of On Location Tour's temperature-controlled buses seems like a much better idea, and you will get to cover a lot more ground in a bus than on foot.
However, you may not cover as much ground or go as quickly as you might like. The streets can be just as crowded as the sidewalks, especially depending on when you go, and weekends are especially bad. It can take quite a long time to go only a few blocks. Accordingly, if you want to see everything this tour has to offer, be prepared for it to run well over the expected time frame. Definitely, don't make any plans for directly afterward.
When you do get stuck in traffic, and it feels like it's taking forever to get anywhere, just remember, it isn't any better walking around in those massive holiday crowds. Sometimes, it can actually be worse, especially in the areas of the Sak's Fifth Avenue light show and Rockefeller Center. The crowds there can be so bad at times that you literally feel like your suffocating. Besides, you do get a beautiful view of the Rockefeller Christmas tree from the bus, which is definitely the highlight of this tour, and you don't even have to fight your way through a crowd to do it.
You will not get a good view of the holiday windows of all four major department stores on this tour. The tour does make a stop at Bloomingdale's and end at Macy's but for the other two, all you'll get is a quick drive-by. Even at Bloomingdale's if you're running late, the time there may be cut short. Macy's is at the end of the tour, however, so you can take all the time you like there.
Before you get to Macy's the tour does make one other stop at Bryant Park. There you can do some shopping in their cute holiday village or get a quick bite to eat or a drink.
In between stops, you will pass some familiar locations from beloved Christmas movies like Elf and Home Alone although it is hard to see much because it is so dark. It is still fun getting to see clips from these beloved films and playing holiday movie trivia as you drive around though,
On the whole, this tour is quite a mixed bag. You will get to see some exciting decorations and familiar locations but perhaps not as many as you would like nor as well as you would like. If you really want to see the lights, you will probably want to stick with this tour, However, if you are more interested in the iconic movie and TV sites, you may want to go with one of On Location Tours daytime tours, when you can really see what you are looking at.
