The Lieutenant is an extremely poignant musical about Lieutenant William Calley and the My Lai Massacre. This completely sung-through show has a soaring rock score that really hits all the right notes. It packs quite an emotional punch.
Unbelievably, this incredibly stirring musical only originally played on Broadway for 9 days. Maybe, rock musicals were not as popular as they later grew to be or people just weren't ready for a musical about Vietnam in 1975, a musical that, in fact, opened before the war was even officially over. Perhaps, it was due to the inexperience of its producers who did not know how to raise enough capital to run a show.
In any case, now this unfortunately overlooked musical has been granted its due with a limited revival as part of the York Theater's Musicals in Mufti series. The show is an absolute gem. It is beautifully performed by the phenomenal York cast. It may just be one of the York Theater Company's best shows ever.
And that's our view. For more about The Lieutenant, to purchase a ticket to one of the few remaining performances, or to find out about other upcoming shows in the Musicals in Mufti series, visit yorktheatre.org.
Tune in Saturday for Still More Theater Saturday.
