I started this blog with one daughter, kept it up with the other, to spend time together doing something we enjoyed.
However, things change and people evolve. My daughters are older, busier, and not as interested in writing.
From now on this blog will be mostly mom with occasional contributions from my daughters and maybe even my husband.
Nothing else will change. We'll still focus on sharing fun places to go, fun things to do, and more, and we would  still love to hear your views too

As they uncover the true story behind her death, their concepts of worth are challenged. Soon they spiral down into a cancel culture contest with deadly consequences only to realize the economics of being a woman. A comedy.

The show follows the passage of Lieutenant William Calley from raw recruit in the US Army through his 1971 court-martial for the infamous My Lai massacre of innocent civilians in 1968. The authors question the guilty verdict of a man who was tried first in the national media and later by a military tribunal, when militarism itself should perhaps shoulder the brunt of the blame.

3) Love Letters

A Pulitzer Prize finalist for Drama, A.R. Gurney’s Love Letters is a two-hander drama comprised of letters exchanged between two friends over a lifetime. Andrew and Melissa, both born into wealth and position, begin their correspondence in childhood with birthday party thank-you notes. Their letters continue through their boarding school and college years while they are romantically attached and later through their individual marriages and careers. As the actors read the letters aloud, an evocative, touching, frequently funny, but always telling pair of character studies is revealed, where what is implied is as revealing and affecting as what is written down.

4) Out of the Apple Orchard

Inspired by the timeless works of Joseph Stein’s Fiddler on the Roof, Sholom Aleichem’s “Tevye the Dairyman," and Charles Dickens’ "A Christmas Carol", the Apple Tree Series tells the captivating story of a Jewish immigrant family who arrives in New York City in 1910, searching for religious freedom and golden opportunities in the land of America. The series follows the Biemans through four generations, taking them from the vibrant Lower East Side to the scenic Mountaindale hamlet in Upstate New York’s Catskill Mountains.

Audiences of all ages will be delighted by the tale of Adam Bieman, a young boy who finds himself in trouble due to his mischievous choices that tear at his conscience. We learn that making amends and asking for forgiveness is essential when making mistakes. Out of the Apple Orchard showcases the injustices of antisemitism and highlights the discrimination that is so pervasive in today’s society.

6) In the Manor

The Manor by Kathrine Bates will bring to life the famous rooms and stylings of Greystone Hall. The two-act play originally was first performed in 2002 at Greystone Mansion in Beverly Hills. Greystone Hall's Managing Partner and Greystone resident Velda Moog travelled to Los Angeles to see the show and meet with the playwright. The playwright later adapted the script for its East Coast Debut at Greystone Hall in 2017. The Manor at Greystone Hall continued to play to sold out audiences until the pandemic pressed pause in 2020. The show returned in 2021 in a limited capacity and now it is fully back. Greystone is set to take center stage again as the twelve actors bring audiences room-by-room as the drama unfolds.  As in California each season, local attendees from prIor years have returned with family and guests to see the show again and share their experience with the next generation.

THE STORY

The Manor's script was inspired by tragic events that took place at the magnificent mansion that early 20th century oil magnate, Edward Doheny, built for his son. The real events and family saga were fictionalized by playwright and actress Kathrine Bates and specifically written by her to be performed by the “Theater 40” professional stage company at the Greystone Mansion, now owned by the city of Beverly Hills, California where the events took place. It has played there annually since 2002. Residents and visitors have come back and seen the show once, twice and some even more.

Set in the 1920's, the play is a fictionalized account of the “triumphs and tribulations” of the fabulously wealthy Edward Doheny family, renamed in Bates’ play as the “MacAlisters.” Doheny (1856-1935) drilled the first successful oil well in Los Angeles, starting the oil boom of the early 1900s in Southern California.  In the late 1920s, oil tycoon and philanthropist Doheny was accused of bribing the U.S. Secretary of the Interior in exchange for obtaining a lease 32,000 acres of federal land in California.  This was part of the infamous Teapot Dome scandal during the Harding Administration. Although the Secretary of the Interior was convicted of accepting a bribe, Doheny was ultimately acquitted. In its wake, however, a terrible tragedy took place in the grandiose Greystone Mansion in Beverly Hills he had gifted to his son Ned.

To lend authenticity to the tale, the show will be presented in the grand and glorious Greystone Hall. Audience members are led from room to room in the beautiful mansion as different scenes of the narrative are portrayed, leading up to a shocking conclusion.

The mansion - a symbol of wealth, power and political intrigue - is the star of the show. The plot, a grand setting the likes of “Downton Abbey,” and its similarity to today’s news and politics  – add up to a perfect recipe for a theatrical feast.

Greystone Hall, (2450 Aram Ave, West Chester, PA)

8) Hadestown

Betty Who Joins the cast as Persephone 9/5
Philip Boykin joins the cast as Hades 9/5

Following two intertwining love stories — that of young dreamers Orpheus and Eurydice, and that of King Hades and his wife Persephone — Hadestown invites audiences on a hell-raising journey to the underworld and back. Mitchell’s beguiling melodies and Chavkin’s poetic imagination pit industry against nature, doubt against faith, and fear against love. Performed by a vibrant ensemble of actors, dancers, and singers, Hadestown delivers a deeply resonant and defiantly hopeful theatrical experience.

Following the success of last year’s inaugural event, the Arts in Action Festival is a space for organizations and individuals working at the intersection of artistic production and radical justice to exhibit their work, collaborate on achieving mutual goals, celebrate the resilience and tenacity of their communities, and most importantly, highlight the ways New York City’s punitive view of justice is failing its inhabitants.

Day 1 of the festival will feature:

Workshops from Marissa Gutierrez-Vicario of ARTE, BAC Fellow UGBA of Dark-Skin Support Group, Dr. Anderson P. Smith of All Literary Citizens and Sarah Rim, panels featuring PEN America, Artistic Noise, Midtown Community Court, screenings from Zealous, JustMedia, Empowerment Avenue Films and the Arts, Justice and Safety Coalition, and Tabling from the National Council for Incarcerated and Formerly Incarcerated Women and Girls, Peoples Campaign for Parole Justice, Freedom Agenda, Women’s Community Justice Association, Alliance for Quality Education, Envision Freedom Fund, and Community Voices Heard.

The evening is co-directed by BAC’s Leia Squillace and Musical Theater Factory’s Brisa Areli Muñoz.

The festival will provide a space for participants and organizations to experience the power of art and storytelling as a tool for creating more humane policies and systems. This year’s festival theme is Envisioning The Possible, focusing on how our society’s understanding of justice can be radicalized – moving away from violent incarceration and instead toward community centered alternatives. Additionally, attendees will have all-day access to on-site therapists, reiki, as well as an activation lounge featuring a Social Justice Library, Pen Pal Station, and more.

Dance and Opera
Houston Grand Opera and Urban Bush Women
Intelligence by Jake Heggie, Gene Scheer, and Jawole Willa Jo Zollar
Wed, Sept 6, 7:30 pm

Ahead of the opera's October 20 world premiere in Houston, co-conceiver, director, and choreographer Jawole Willa Jo Zollar discusses the creative process behind Intelligence. A Houston Grand Opera commission, Intelligence takes place during the Civil War in Richmond, Virginia, where Mary Jane Bowser, born into slavery, has been sent to infiltrate the Confederate White House by Elizabeth Van Lew, matriarch of a prominent Confederate family. Learn the little-known true story of these women, whose secret pro-Union spy ring helped win the war. Seven dancers from Urban Bush Women perform highlights.

Urban Bush Women (UBW) burst onto the dance scene in 1984, with bold, demanding, and exciting works that brought under-told stories to life through the art and vision of its award-winning Founder, Jawole Willa Jo Zollar. The Company weaves contemporary dance, music, and text with the history, culture, and spiritual traditions of the African Diaspora under the artistic direction of Chanon Judson and Mame Diarra Speis.

Off the concert stage, UBW has developed an extensive community engagement program, BOLD (Builders, Organizers, and Leaders through Dance). UBW’s largest community engagement project is its Summer Leadership Institute (SLI). This 10-day intensive training program connects dance professionals with community-based artists/activists in a learning experience to leverage the arts as a vehicle for civic engagement. UBW launched the Urban Bush Women Choreographic Center Initiative (CCI) in January 2016 and the Choreographic Center Initiative Producing Program (CCI 2.0) in 2022. The CCI and CCI 2.0 fellowships support the development of women choreographers and producers of color and other underheard voices. www.urbanbushwomen.org
