Books: The Necklace and Don't Lose Your Head
Today we are recommending The Necklace by Matt Witten. Ever since her young daughter, Amy was killed twenty years ago, Susan Lentigo has been living for the day she would see her daughter's killer brought to justice. Finally, his appeals have been exhausted, and his execution date has been set. Susan sets out on a harrowing journey to witness his execution, but along the way she discovers evidence that the man convicted may not be the real killer. She sets out to find the truth no matter how difficult and to possibly keep an innocent man from dying. This is a very intense thriller. The story and characters are both interesting. The character of Susan with her dogged determination to get true justice for her daughter and possibly save other lives in the process is particularly admirable. The book is never boring and never predictable. The ending is somewhat unbelievable but extremely satisfying.
Today we are recommending Don't Lose Your Head by Harriet Marsden. This is an immensely entertaining book . Any fan of the musical, Six, or lover of history who wants to dig deeper into the lives of Henry the VIII's six wives will really enjoy this captivating book. Rather than being a cut and dried historical account, the book is told in a fun way from the point of view of the wives in a similar way to the show, but the book goes into much more detail than the show. Once you've read this book, you will really feel like you know these women.
Movies: What She Said
Today we are talking about What She Said. After Sam is raped and decides to drop the charges against her rapist, her friends and family stage an intervention to try to get her to change her mind. This movie is not so much about rape but the aftermath of a rape. The entire story takes place after the event and the rapist himself never even enters the story. It is more about how what happened to Sam effects her and how she is different than she was before . The character of Sam is not the typical portrait of a rape victim that you normally see in movies and TV. This is important because it shows that everyone's story is different and that just because a person doesn't react to something that happens to them even something as horrendous as being raped in a way that you'd expect doesn't make their feelings and their reactions any less valid or what happened to them any less horrible, or their story any less important.
What She Said is available on digital platforms today.
