Two nobodies dream of writing one hit song for everybody, but their day job composing jingles for commercials isn’t the big break they hoped. That is, until they’re plucked from obscurity by a world-famous pop star named Regina Comet (if destiny had a child, it would be her) and she wants them to create an anthem for her supernova pipes... and her new perfume. They’re so close to the big-time they can smell it, but following your passion doesn’t always lead where you expect. Making a hit song can be a shit-show.

Max Brod Productions (Hank Morris, Executive Producer) announced today that tickets are now on sale for the new off-Broadway musical comedy A Turtle on a Fence Post, set to re-open the newly renamed Theater 555 (555 W. 42nd Street) with performances beginning Tuesday, October 26, 2021.
A Turtle on a Fence Post marks the first time that ticketing platform VenueTix is partnering with an Off-Broadway venue to offer white-label ticketing services for a full theatrical production.
“A turtle on a fence post,” is one of Bill Clinton’s favorite colloquialisms: “If you see a turtle on a fence post,” the former president likes to say, “you know it didn't get there by itself.” Set in the contrasting locales of a comedy club and a correctional institution, Turtle… tells the fish-out-of-water story of a prominent New Yorker thrown into an unknown world by New York’s most powerful man, and how the experience changes him and those around him. The show deals with themes of freedom, forgiveness, truth and shifting perspectives, and features a bullying, toxic, retaliating, brutal New York Governor as its principal antagonist.
While at heart a vibrant story of love and friendship, Turtle… intersects with several major issues of our time including criminal justice, parole reform, and public leadership. Amas Musical Theatre (Donna Trinkoff, Artistic Producer) today announced the fourth year of The Eric H. Weinberger Award for Emerging Librettists, a juried cash and production grant to be given annually to support the early work and career of a deserving musical theatre librettist. The Award commemorates the life and work of playwright/librettist Eric H. Weinberger (1950-2017), who was a Drama Desk Award nominee for Best Book of a Musical (Wanda’s World), and the playwright/librettist of Class Mothers ’68, that earned Pricilla Lopez a Drama Desk Award nomination.
The winner will receive $2,000 to help pay cost-of-living expenses. The winning musical will receive development assistance in the 2022 New Works Development Program of Amas Musical Theatre, which is administering the Award. The development assistance culminates in the work being rehearsed and performed by New York theatre professionals in an Amas Lab production. Amas was the development home for several of Mr. Weinberger’s musicals, and produced the World Premiere of Wanda’s World and the New York Premiere of Tea for Three.
Submissions will open on September 20, 2021 and will close November 30, 2021. All submissions must be sent through an online application that can be found at Eric H. Weinberger Award For Emerging Librettists. Only one submission per playwright/librettist will be accepted. The winner of the award will be announced late February-early March 2022.

The title of this salon concert—Revisit—refers to the ACO’s highly-praised video launched in fall 2020, The Chaconne Project, which was filmed and recorded in Harlem. Thomas Crawford returns to the Parish for a live performance with the original film cast in a lively program of Baroque repertoire focusing on the chaconne, a musical genre characterized by its repeating bass line. The ACO and its award-winning Classical Music for Kids (CMK) program is producing a filmed performance of Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf, in an original arrangement by founder Thomas Crawford, to mark a newly launched collaboration with The WNET Group’s Kids’ Media and Education Department. The WNET Group plans to premiere classroom resources from CMK on PBS LearningMedia, a free online site that reaches nearly 1.8 million users nationwide with tens of thousands of high-quality, research-based, and standards-aligned resources drawn from critically acclaimed PBS programs such as Great Performances and American Masters, and from expert content contributors like The National Archives and Library of Congress. The Orchestra’s production of Peter and the Wolf is performed by an ACO chamber ensemble with two professional mimes—the acclaimed Bill Bowers and Catherine Gasta—enacting the story. In a Berlin nightclub, as the 1920’s draws to a close, a garish Master of Ceremonies welcomes the audience and assures them they will forget all their troubles at the Cabaret. With the Emcee’s bawdy songs as wry commentary, Cabaret explores the dark, heady, and tumultuous life of Berlin’s natives and expatriates as Germany slowly yields to the emerging Third Reich. Cliff Bradshaw, a young American writer newly arrived in Berlin, is immediately taken by English singer Sally Bowles. Meanwhile, Fräulein Schneider, proprietor of Cliff and Sally’s boarding house, tentatively begins a romance with Herr Schultz, a mild-mannered fruit seller who happens to be Jewish. First presented in 1966, the ground-breaking musical Cabaret won an impressive 8 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, which then culminated into a smashing Oscar Winning film in 1972 winning 8 Oscars. This classic Kander and Ebb score is entertaining, thought- provoking and Broadway musical theatre at its best.

Ballet Hispánico will celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with the anticipated return of its A La Calle Block Party. The fourth edition of the popular community event will take place on Sunday, September 26, from noon-4:00pm. This year’s event will be streamed for free for audiences nationwide to enjoy the festivities.
As it has done in previous years, Ballet Hispánico will take over West 89th Street (between Amsterdam and Columbus Avenues), its home for 50 years. The event will include performances by the internationally renowned Company and prestigious School of Dance and Community Arts Partnerships students.
The Company will perform two numbers, a solo from Arabesque by Vicente Nebrada and an excerpt from 18+1 by Gustavo Ramírez Sansano.
Students from the School of Dance will also take to the stage and perform select numbers, including Flamenco Work and Ritmo y Ruido, from the 50th Anniversary Gala, and Salsa Work by Milteri Tucker. The newly formed Pa'lante Scholars will perform an excerpt from Bury me Standing.
New to the block party this year and as part of its commitment to champion and amplify voices within its community, Ballet Hispánico will be inviting select Latinx dance companies from around New York City to perform as guest artists, including Bombazo Dance Company and Calpulli Mexican Dance Company as well as others, to be announced in the near future.

Filmed in southern Spain,
Castillo was shot on location at The Castillo de Blanca, a castle erected in the 12th century in the Spanish town of Blanca (Region of Murcia). Daniel's daily investigation and interrogation of the site was an arduous and risky process, climbing 730 feet daily underneath the intense summer heat, while the town took siesta, and onto the two towers and risky pinnacle, without being tethered.

December 2021: Just in Time for the December Holidays: The Performer
The Performer considers constructions of performance and homes in on the curvilinear separating fantasy from reality and drama from camp. The Performer presents a documentation of an over-the-top artist, a moody bon vivant with a penchant for excess and grand expression who lives large, including in the recesses of his head. The film is shot in the house Picasso gave to the surrealist artist Dora Maar, his famous muse and mistress, when he ended their relationship. Dora, significantly altered, lived and died in this maison in the Provençal village of Ménerbes, France. The film takes inspiration from her life, tackling the schism between the performance of self that one broadcasts to the public, and that which one endures privately.

Where musicals (come) return to life! The York Theatre Company (James Morgan, Producing Artistic Director; Evans Haile, Executive Director), dedicated to the development of new musicals and rediscovery of musical gems from the past, has announced the continuation of its 50th Anniversary Season at its new temporary home at The Theatre at St. Jean’s (184 East 76th Street, between Lexington and Third Avenues). Following a devastating flood due to a water main break in January 2021 at its home at Saint Tennessee Williams’ legendary play The Glass Menagerie, marking over 75 years since its Broadway debut, takes on new musical life in the form of Blue Roses. The classic story of a frustrated writer and the memories of his overbearing mother, his troubled sister, and the gentleman caller who will shatter their world is transformed into a haunting new musical from the team of composer Nancy Ford and lyricist and librettist Mimi Turque.Church, the company will temporarily relocate to The Theatre at St. Jean’s. The Fall 2021 season includes three special one-night-only concert events: The York’s 50th Anniversary Concert Celebration; the New York concert premiere of the musical Blue Roses; and the 29th Oscar Hammerstein Award Gala – in addition to the premiere Mainstage run of the new musical Cheek to Cheek: Irving Berlin in Hollywood.
Marking the return to live entertainment and launching its Fall 2021 season, The York will present a one-night only concert, The York’s 50th Anniversary Celebration. Join The York when the company concludes its milestone celebration with a special event not to be missed. More details to come soon! Continuing the celebration, and rescheduled from April 2020 due to the pandemic, is a special benefit New York premiere concert performance of the new musical Blue Roses, with book and lyrics by Mimi Turque and music by Nancy Ford, based on The Glass Menagerie by Tennessee Williams. ONE NIGHT ONLY, Monday evening, October 18, 2021 at The Theatre at St. Jean’s. The one-night-only event will begin at 7:00PM and will be followed by a reception.
The premiere of Cheek to Cheek: Irving Berlin in Hollywood, a song and dance celebration featuring the music and lyrics of the legendary Irving Berlin, is the company’s first 2021 mainstage production, and is presented in association with Riki Kane Larimer. The show has a book by Barry Kleinbort (13 Things About Ed Carpolotti), music direction by David Hancock Turner (York’s Desperate Measures), and is conceived, directed and choreographed by four-time Tony Award nominee Randy Skinner (42nd Street, Dames at Sea, Irving Berlin’s White Christmas, and Ain’t Broadway Grand). Cast and additional creative team will be announced shortly.
Cheek to Cheek: Irving Berlin in Hollywood is an all-singing, all-dancing celebration of the most famous songs that Irving Berlin composed for the silver screen. Mr. Berlin understood the impact dance had on the public and his melodies, rhythms, and lyrics reflected his love of that art form. Six spectacular performers will showcase these magnificent songs and will also tell the stories behind the man who made the music that made the movies dance. Four-time Tony nominee Randy Skinner directs and choreographs an evening featuring an array of classic Berlin tunes from such classic films as Top Hat, Alexander’s Ragtime Band, Holiday Inn, Easter Parade, White Christmas, and many more!
