Artpark announces a performance by JP Jofre Hard Tango Chamber Band and Alarm Will Sound as part of the 2021 New Music in the Park series on August 7, 2021 at 7pm in the Artpark Amphitheater. JP Jofre is known as one of the world’s foremost soloists on the bandoneon: the soulful, Argentinian instrument that it is the main voice of tango and that Astor Piazzolla catapulted to fame. But Jofre is also a brilliant and pioneering composer whose work transcends nuevo tango to encompass the neo-romantic, indie classical and jazz. The twenty-piece Alarm Will Sound once again brings their engaging, otherworldly sounds to Artpark, playing music with an irreverent charm and daring seldom heard in stodgy halls. This time, their performance will include a previous collaborative work with Queens, NY-based artist Eartheater, who distills foley-filled digital production and classical composition into works suspended between reckless romanticism and detailed sonic tapestries. When Fire is Allowed to Finish, her work with Alarm Will Sound, contains six emotionally charged movements. The music is fearlessly expressive, lush, and emotional — bound to jolt even the most jaded listener.
The music is fearlessly expressive, lush, and emotional, and while harkening back to Romanticism with a capital ‘R’ simultaneously stays rooted in the contemporary by incorporating unusual and unexpected timbres and rhythmic devices. For this project, composers Aaron Parker, Steve Snowden, and Conrad Winslow were enlisted to orchestrate Drewchin’s musical ideas. This work has a duration of 30 minutes and was premiered in May of 2018. This piece is being recorded now and will be released on the label Cognitive Shift possibly later in the fall.

Broadway On Demand, the industry-leading theater streaming platform, has announced the streaming premiere of the musical Together Apart, a collection of ten mini-musicals, written, composed, directed-by and starring Brown University alumni. Together Apart was conceived by Grammy Award winner Lisa Loeb and features Emmy and SAG Award winner Julie Bowen (Modern Family), Emmy Award Winner Josh Hamilton (13 Reasons Why), Ann Harada (Avenue Q), JoBeth Williams (Kramer vs. Kramer), Lisa Loeb and more. The musical will also be a benefit for The Actors Fund. It will be available on Broadway on Demand starting on August 6th for a two week run.
Together Apart evolved out of a Brown Musical Theatre class reunion on Zoom held during the Covid-19 pandemic. The reunion was attended by graduates from the early 80’s through the late 90’s. Lisa Loeb, ’90 Graduate, was energized by the digital reconnection and was inspired to find a solution to everyone’s concern about how theater could exist during the pandemic. She began collaborating with her fellow graduates to create Together Apart. Together Apart was intentionally created using the Zoom platform as a reflection of life during the pandemic.
The production is a compilation of ten, seven-minute musicals, all about connecting on Zoom at the beginning of the pandemic. The musicals are interspersed with short pieces by Eric Kirchberger playing Dr. Anthony Fauci.

About: Opening number about how difficult it was to find connection during the beginning of the pandemic, through Zoom.
It’s Okay Mom
About: An optimistic single dad does all he can to keep life under quarantine from affecting his seven-year old daughter and his nervous mom.

About: The New Normal is a continuous scene that takes place in an elementary school zoom classroom during which the parents gradually become more involved and end up taking over entirely.

About: Two old friends whose lives have taken very different paths reconnect over Zoom.

About: Speed-dating during a pandemic isn't easy. If the virus doesn't get you, the political divide just might.

About: A non-tech savvy teacher is thrust into Zoom classes and the radical shift in how teachers and students interacted, the tense political atmosphere, and the hopeful potency to still connect inspired this piece.
Breathe
About: Zach and Sondra are divorcing, but Sondra’s move-out day falls on New York’s Shutdown Day 2020, so she and Zach are forced to become “roommates” for the duration of the shut down. Breathe follows Zach and Sondra’s story and that of Zach’s loving parents through a series of Zoom calls during the historic year and its impact on this one African American family.

Fairmount Park Conservancy Encourages Exploration at FDR Park with
Salsa Dancing, Tasting Tours, and More
Fairmount Park Conservancy is encouraging the exploration of the 348-acre FDR Park in South Philadelphia this summer. The non-profit champion for Philadelphia parks is offering a variety of ways to discover the Park, from a scavenger hunt to salsa classes to a food tasting tour.
In addition, the Conservancy has created a new digital guide, highlighting historic landmarks, natural areas, and more in FDR Park. The FDR Park Digital Guide, launching in August, will allow users to navigate the Park and find less-traveled gems within the space on their own. Find the guide at myphillypark.org.
STARTING POINTS
Park Hubs: To enhance the visitor experience in FDR Park, “Park Hubs” will be installed in August throughout the Park for the summer and fall. Three spots throughout the Park will include wayfinding signage, portable restrooms, and hand-sanitizing stations that serve as helpful jumping off points for exploring the Park.

The Institute’s aim is to bring together dancers, choreographers and directors around the world to experience the master teachers of color whose practices are embedded in the community and are focused on advancing the art of dance that transform the personal, environmental and metaphysical spaces. As a virtual dance institute, The Bridge will invite world renowned as well as up and coming dancers and choreographer to come to guest teach the class. In March of 2020 and for the first time in history, the performing arts were decimated worldwide when theater shut down indefinitely in every country except one: South Korea. From the frontlines in Seoul, this film follows a company of artists involved in two theatrical productions-–the World Tour of The Phantom of The Opera and the South Korean Tour of Cats—two of the productions that pushed ahead safely during the pandemic and helped show the way forward. And a continent away in the UK, the film simultaneously follows Andrew Lloyd Webber, composer of Cats and The Phantom of the Opera among much else, as he uses the example set by his Korean colleagues to fight for theater’s future on the West End and beyond. The Show Must Go On chronicles the survival of the performing arts and the worldwide resuscitation of an artform with the fate of a global industry at stake. But more importantly, the film tells a human story – one of the resilience of storytellers and their determination to come together to heal, create, and inspire. The Show Must Go On, co-directed and produced by Berinstein and Cannold, is executive produced by WYSIWYG Studios, CEO Kwan-woo Park and Elizabeth Armstrong.

The Town Hall (www.thetownhall.org) has announced that award winning stars of Sunday In the Park With George, Mandy Patinkin and Bernadette Peters will be special guests at the intimate digital conversation event with Tony Award-winning playwright and director James Lapine and composer Stephen Sondheim. Moderated by award winning actress Christine Baranski, who was in the original off-Broadway production of Sunday In The Park With George at Playwrights Horizons, the evening will celebrate the release of Lapine's new book Putting It Together: How Stephen Sondheim and I created "Sunday In The Park With George" (Farrar, Straus, and Giroux). Putting It Together is being released the day of this event - August 3, 2021, and The Town Hall's virtual conversation begins at 7PM EST.
In Putting It Together, Lapine tells the story of Sunday in the Park with George, the first of his collaborations with Sondheim. The new book takes a behind-the-scenes look at the making of this iconic musical and chronicles the two-year odyssey of its creation.
On August 3, Lapine and Sondheim will come together to discuss Putting It Together and the Pulitzer Prize-winning musical that commenced their decades-long working relationship. Patinkin and Peters will also be on hand to share their memories of this groundbreaking musical.

South Street Seaport Museum announces FREE tours of the 1908 lightship Ambrose every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from August 6, 2021 through October 10, 2021. Announces Tugboat Rides on
W.O. Decker
Saturdays beginning 7/31
South Street Seaport Museum announces public cruises aboard the 1930 tugboat W.O. Decker every Saturday from July 31, 2021 through August 21, 2021. The ship will run three tours each Saturday, departing at 1:15pm, 2:45pm, and 4:15pm. Tickets to ride are $30 for adults, $25 for seniors/students, and $15 for kids and are available for purchase at seaportmuseum.org/decker.
Take an exciting 75-minute ride on the last surviving New York-built wooden tugboat W.O. Decker, recently named “Tugboat of the Year” by the Steamship Historical Society of America. Cruises will explore the New York Harbor, and views may include the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, the Battery, and Governors Island, as you set out on an adventure unlike any you’ve had before!
Advance reservations are recommended, and guests must check in 15 minutes before the scheduled tour. In accordance with current Federal and New York State COVID-19 guidance for public transportation, masks are required onboard W.O. Decker at all times. Access to W.O. Decker requires climbing angled gangways and a step over her side from a floating deck. Participants must be age 10 or older.

A dependable haven for artists in isolation, Theater Resources Unlimited (TRU) is now into its second year of non-stop weekly Community Gatherings this Friday, having offered to date over 60 conversations and unlimited camaraderie since April 17, 2020. TRU hosts their Community Gatherings every Friday at 4:30pm ET via Zoom, to explore the creation of art and theater in the time of COVID-19. These crucial conversations will continue going forward as theater reopens. Ask questions, bring answers, be part of a community – it’s an opportunity to network with theater professionals and talk about keeping theater alive during shutdown, and what we are doing now, going forward.
