Sholem Aleichem’s Tevye stories formed the basis of Fiddler on the Roof. TEVYE SERVED RAW presents this material ‘raw,’ i.e., as it was created in Europe, before being Americanized for Broadway. The show includes adaptations of Tevye stories (“What, Me Worthy?” and “Get Thee Gone!”), scenes from Sholem Aleichem’s own long-unseen Yiddish stage version, and three of his purely comedic stories, newly adapted (“Strange Jews on a Train,” “The Yiddish Sisyphus” and “A Stepmother’s Trash-Talk”).

The Courtroom is a re-enactment of deportation proceedings. In 2004, an immigrant from the Philippines who was married to a U.S. Citizen came to this country on a K3 Visa. After inadvertently registering to vote at the DMV in Chicago, receiving a voter registration card in the mail, and voting, her removal proceeding was set in motion. It began in Immigration Court and her case was eventually heard by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit. The Courtroom will be performed entirely verbatim from the court transcripts.

Featuring Guest Pianist Charlie Albright
The American Symphony Orchestra will present Sounds of the American Century, the next concert in its Vanguard series at Carnegie Hall, on Friday, January 25 at 8 pm. The program illustrates how New York City composers of the mid-20th century sought to define a new American sensibility in orchestral music, and will be highlighted by the New York premiere of Vivian Fine’s Concertante for Piano and Orchestra. The piece is one of some 140 works she wrote over the course of 68 years, making her one of America’s most important composers. The young guest soloist Charlie Albright, named Artist-in-Residence for Harvard University’s Leverett House, a position last filled by cellist Yo-Yo Ma, is also the recipient of an Avery Fisher Career Grant and a Gilmore Young Artists Award.

The abstract works of Robert Mann, legendary founder of the Juilliard Quartet, and Jacob Druckman — whose works were commissioned by the New York Philharmonic and the Chicago Symphony — explored the possibilities of orchestral color and sound. Mann passed away in January 2018, making hisFantasy for Orchestra serve as a fitting tribute on this program. Pulitzer Prize-winner and Lincoln Center founding president William Schuman was a great champion of American music. His Symphony No. 3 was a pronounced popular success, premiered by the Boston Symphony in 1941 under Koussevitzky’s baton, to whom it was dedicated. Schuman and Fine, whose Concertante for Piano and Orchestra is given its NY premiere at this performance, brought their compositional craft to the classical tradition of orchestral music with works marked by vitality, brilliance, and structural clarity.

12B) THE ORCHESTRA NOW (TŌN) BEGINS NEW YEAR WITH POPULAR FREE CONCERT SERIES AT PETER NORTON SYMPHONY SPACE ON JANUARY 27, 2019
The Orchestra Now (TŌN) kicks off 2019 with a free concert led by resident conductor Zachary Schwartzman at Peter Norton Symphony Space on Sunday, January 27. The program features Ravel’s arrangement of the ten musical illustrations of Viktor Hartmann’s artwork that comprise Mussorgsky’s well-known and powerful Pictures at an Exhibition in addition to Ravel’s own ominous La valse. Other works include Russian composer Anatoly Lyadov’s gentle and colorful fantasy, The Enchanted Lake, in addition to Stravinsky’s lush and fantastical Firebird Suite.
These free community outreach events have become engaging neighborhood activities and are a great opportunity to introduce families and new explorers to the joys of classical music.

Roundabout Theatre Company (Todd Haimes, Artistic Director/CEO) announces relaxed performances for 2019 Broadway and Off-Broadway productions, beginning withTrue West starring Ethan Hawke and Paul Dano, on March 2, 2019 at the American Airlines Theatre. Relaxed performances at Roundabout are open to all, and launched in April 2018 with the first series of its kind geared to patrons of all ages during the world premiere of Amy and the Orphans at the Laura Pels Theatre.
Following True West, Roundabout will present relaxed performances for Merrily We Roll Along on March 30, 2018 at the Laura Pels Theatre; Kiss Me, Kate (date TBD) at Studio 54; and the world premiere of Toni Stone on July 20, 2019 at the Laura Pels Theatre. All relaxed performances will be matinees.
Relaxed performances are an inclusive theatrical experience designed to welcome individuals with special needs and those attending with them. The York Theatre Company (James Morgan, Producing Artistic Director; Evans Haile, Executive Director), dedicated to the development of new musicals and rediscovery of musical gems from the past, enters the new year with the 25th Anniversary of its acclaimed Musicals in Mufti series celebrating the work of the legendary librettist and lyricist Alan Jay Lerner, whose hundredth birthday was August 31, 2018. The series honors one of the creators behind such classics as Brigadoon, Camelot, Love Life, and My Fair Lady.
Opening the 2019 winter series is Carmelina, with music by Burton Lane, lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner, additional lyrics by Barry Harman, and book by Joseph Stein and Alan Jay Lerner. Performances begin Saturday afternoon, January 26, 2019 and continue for 11 performances only through February 3, 2019. Opening Night will be Sunday evening, January 27, 2019 at 7:00 p.m.

The Broadway-bound production of BeBe Winans' new autobiographical musical BORN FOR THIS, releases its first-ever music video of the title song, starring Donald Webber, Jr., who is set to depict Winans when BORN FOR THIS comes to Broadway (theatre and dates TBA).
