8) OFF-BROADWAY’S TRIUMPHANT HIT
TEVYE SERVED RAW
RETURNS TO THE PLAYROOM THEATRE
JANUARY 28 – FEBRUARY 13
Sholem Aleichem’s Tevye stories formed the basis of Fiddler on the Roof. TEVYE SERVED RAW presents this material ‘raw,’ i.e., as it was created in Europe, before being Americanized for Broadway. The show includes adaptations of Tevye stories (“What, Me Worthy?” and “Get Thee Gone!”), scenes from Sholem Aleichem’s own long-unseen Yiddish stage version, and three of his purely comedic stories, newly adapted (“Strange Jews on a Train,” “The Yiddish Sisyphus” and “A Stepmother’s Trash-Talk”).
TEVYE SERVED RAW made its New York premiere in 2018 to unanimous rave reviews (“Hilarious” – Jewish Standard; “Incredibly moving” – Tablet; “Brilliantly directed” – Forward) and, by popular demand, is set to resume performances January 28th at The Playroom Theater in the Heart of the Theatre District, 151 West 46 Street (just east of Seventh Ave.) through February 13th.
TEVYE SERVED RAW features an original score by Alex Ryaboy. The playing schedule will be Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 7pm with a 3pm matinee on Wednesday, February 13th. Tickets are $38 and are available through www.TevyeServedRaw.com or by calling 1-800-838-3006.

SOUNDS OF THE AMERICAN CENTURY
AT CARNEGIE HALL ON JANUARY 25, 2019
New York Premiere of Vivian Fine’s Concertante for Piano and Orchestra
Featuring Guest Pianist Charlie Albright
The American Symphony Orchestra will present Sounds of the American Century, the next concert in its Vanguard series at Carnegie Hall, on Friday, January 25 at 8 pm. The program illustrates how New York City composers of the mid-20th century sought to define a new American sensibility in orchestral music, and will be highlighted by the New York premiere of Vivian Fine’s Concertante for Piano and Orchestra. The piece is one of some 140 works she wrote over the course of 68 years, making her one of America’s most important composers. The young guest soloist Charlie Albright, named Artist-in-Residence for Harvard University’s Leverett House, a position last filled by cellist Yo-Yo Ma, is also the recipient of an Avery Fisher Career Grant and a Gilmore Young Artists Award.
Leon Botstein shares the stories behind the music in a lively 30-minute Conductor’s Notes Q&A at 7 PM in Stern Auditorium/Perelman Stage. Free for all ticket holders.

Robert Mann: Fantasy for Orchestra
Vivian Fine: Concertante for Piano and Orchestra (New York Premiere)
Jacob Druckman: Prism
William Schuman: Symphony No. 3
The abstract works of Robert Mann, legendary founder of the Juilliard Quartet, and Jacob Druckman — whose works were commissioned by the New York Philharmonic and the Chicago Symphony — explored the possibilities of orchestral color and sound. Mann passed away in January 2018, making hisFantasy for Orchestra serve as a fitting tribute on this program. Pulitzer Prize-winner and Lincoln Center founding president William Schuman was a great champion of American music. His Symphony No. 3 was a pronounced popular success, premiered by the Boston Symphony in 1941 under Koussevitzky’s baton, to whom it was dedicated. Schuman and Fine, whose Concertante for Piano and Orchestra is given its NY premiere at this performance, brought their compositional craft to the classical tradition of orchestral music with works marked by vitality, brilliance, and structural clarity.
Tickets, priced at $25 / $40 / $55, are available at carnegiehall.org, CarnegieCharge at 212.247.7800, or the box office at 57th St & 7th Ave.

EUREKA DAY
By Jonathan Spector, Directed by Adrienne Campbell-Holt
Monday, January 28 at 5:00PM
When a child at the Eureka Day School in Berkeley, California, is diagnosed with the Mumps, the school’s Executive Committee – normally a bubble of civility in which all can voice their concerns – ruptures down the middle. Battle lines are drawn between those parents in support of vaccination and those against it. How do we speak with peers whose opinions endanger our wellbeing? For Eureka Day, finding an answer might mean compromising their “safe space” – or rebuilding it altogether.
EXCEPTION TO THE RULE

ENGLISH
By Sanaz Toossi, Directed by Saheem Ali
Thursday, January 31 at 5:00PM
“English, always.” That’s the motto for one classroom in Iran, as a group of students struggles to learn a new language. If only they can conquer this mysterious tongue, doors will open to new jobs, deeper family connections, and boundless opportunities. But as they practice, practice, practice, desperate not to fail (or, worst of all, sound like Borat), understanding a new world might also mean leaving their old one behind.
GO. PLEASE. GO.
By Emily Feldman, Directed by Will Davis
Friday, February 1 at 5:00PM
After five years of dating, Emily and Jeremy break it off. They agree that he will move out of the home they share. But, he doesn’t go. Emily moves on, and still, he doesn’t go. Through seventy years of new loves, marriages, babies, and funerals, he is uncomfortable staying, but unable to leave. GO. PLEASE. GO. articulates the infinite transience of life and the comfort we seek in the tricky middle years between birth and death. Strains of OUR TOWN echo through this new play spanning decades of celebrations and devastations, as Emily and Jeremy try to figure out how to survive being alive—together and alone.
