Sam Kissajukian was a stand-up comedian. Burnt out, he rented an abandoned cake factory and became a painter. However, it turns out he was actually suffering from undiagnosed bipolar disorder, and a six-month manic episode followed during which he created 300 large paintings, which unknowingly documented his mental state.
In the one-man show, 300 Paintings, Kissajukian documents his journey in his own words. Even for those who cannot personally relate to it, his story is quite compelling, and the man himself is so pleasant and personable that you can't help being drawn in. His comedic background really shines through in the generous doses of humor throughout the show, and his lovely Australian accent only seves to add to his charm.
All in all, the approximately 80-minute show passes by in a breeze and never lags. It's definitely a show worth seeing, plus as an added bonus, several of Kissajukian's actual paintings are on display in the theater's lobby.
