I started this blog with one daughter, kept it up with the other, to spend time together doing something we enjoyed.
However, things change and people evolve. My daughters are older, busier, and not as interested in writing.
From now on this blog will be mostly mom with occasional contributions from my daughters and maybe even my husband.
Nothing else will change. We'll still focus on sharing fun places to go, fun things to do, and more, and we would  still love to hear your views too

8) Dirty Books

DIRTY BOOKS is an immersive performance that plunges audiences into the heated battles over anti-obscenity laws and censorship in America. Inspired by the true stories of erotic fiction writers of the 1960’s and using actual Supreme Court transcripts, DIRTY BOOKS reveals the ingenuity and resilience of artists who thrived in the shadows of America's anti-obscenity laws working in the soft-core adult publishing industry. Inside an intimate world of secret bookstores, banned novels, and underground desire, the audience collaborates with the company to compose an erotic story. Each night, the story is created live in the room and published online after each show.

Even if closure proves elusive, there is breakfast. There is warmth. There is someone sitting beside you. Can grief be metabolized like a meal?

With help from her sibling, a chorus of strange visitors, and the lingering scent of brisket, Wake is a collective attempt to make peace with impermanence and find the poetry in goodbye.

So, when he mentions in passing that he wants to try acting, Augustus is quick to offer a helping hand. 11) Orlando: A Rhapsody

A father and daughter step onstage to tell their own entwined story through the words of Virginia Woolf—Orlando, The Waves, A Room of One’s Own—and through themselves. What begins as play, dress-up, and shared memory grows into a rhapsodic duet where language, movement, and imagination collide. Like children inventing a world in their living room, or seasoned actors sparring over Shakespeare, they slip between Woolf’s poetry and their personal histories.

As one becomes Orlando young, the other Orlando old, their dialogue unfolds across centuries, genders, and selves. The piece wrestles with Woolf’s great questions—what it means to be, how stories shape identity, and why fiction matters—while revealing the intimate bonds and fractures of family. Both fanciful and raw, Orlando: A Rhapsody is less a retelling than a living conversation with Woolf, with each other, and with the audience.

Penis Envy
Written & Performed by Becky Bondurant
In this critically acclaimed solo-show, monologist, writer, and English teacher Becky Bondurant threads her coming-of-age narrative through a Freudian needle, weaving from eating disorders and female orgasms to circumcision and breastfeeding against a backdrop of political crisis. Penis Envy is the culmination of more than three years of study under New York City’s master monologist Mike Daisey who has described Becky as "a cross between Sylvia Plath and Mary Katherine Gallagher." Informed by her experiences as a parent, a teacher, a queer, a student of literature, and a former Catholic, Becky’s stories unravel extemporaneously to undress taboo topics like sex, age, weight, othering, power, ritual, and death in a style that is raunchy, irreverent, and sharply philosophical. The 46 paintings that appear as the backdrop of Penis Envy were created in a collaboration between Becky and her two children, ages 7 and 9, over the course of three weeks leading up to the show’s premiere at the Capital Fringe Festival 2024 in Washington, D.C. The show was named "Best of Fringe" by DC Theater Arts in 2024 and praised by critics such as Chris Klimek who wrote in The Washington Post, “I loved ‘Penis Envy,’” and described the show as “vulnerable and true to her, funny and inviting.” Penis Envy ran as part of the 2024 Philadelphia Fringe Festival and was described in The Broad Street Review as “the best kind of monologue show: finely crafted and intimately inhabited...  funny, bold, poignant, sad, and transformative.”

31) CUNY Dance Initiative Announces

Sun Kim Dance Theatre in the World Premiere of

Alien of Extraordinary”

November 9 at 5:00pm

LaGuardia Performing Arts Center, Long Island City, NY

The CUNY Dance Initiative (CDI), an expansive program providing New York City choreographers and dance companies with creative residencies on CUNY college campuses, announces the world premiere of Alien of Extraordinary by Sun Kim Dance Theatre on Sunday, November 9 at 5pm at LaGuardia Performing Arts Center (31-10 Thomson Ave, Long Island City, NY). General admission is $20, with student tickets available for $10. Get tickets here.

Alien of Extraordinary is a dance theatre piece born from the labyrinth of the U.S. artist visa system – a process that flattens human stories into forms and reduces lives to paperwork. Choreographed by Sun Kim, a South Korean immigrant who specializes in the street dance style of popping, the piece takes its name from the “alien of extraordinary ability” (O-1) visa and her own experiences with it. Performed by a cast of eight dancers, Alien of Extraordinary features theme music by klezmer musician and composer Michael Winograd. The piece is an invitation to witness the immigrant artist’s journey in all its fragility and resilience, creating a meeting ground for empathy, imagination, and shared belonging.

There will be a post-performance Q&A with Sun Kim and J. Brian Cho, an attorney who specializes in the O-1 Visa process, moderated by LPAC Artistic Director Handan Ozbilgin.

32) Flushing Town Hall Presents Shadow Performance by

America’s Got Talent Finalist Catapult

Families are invited to join a mesmerizing shadow show and participate in a pre-show workshop to create their own shadow magic

On Friday, November 7, Flushing Town Hall will present Magic Shadows by Catapult. Catapult is more than a shadow dance company; they offer audiences the chance to experience a theatrical art form that combines dance, storytelling, and sculpture in an amazingly imaginative way.

Founded in 2009 by Adam Battlestein—choreographer, creative director, and master teaching artist for Pilobolus Dance Theatre for 19 years—Catapult catapulted to fame on America’s Got Talent, earning its way to the finals of the NBC-TV hit show in Season 8.

This November, Catapult is bringing its show “Magic Shadows” to Queens. Working behind a screen, Catapult dancers use their bodies to create seemingly impossible shadow images. Packed with hundreds of transformations, “Magic Shadows” is a humorous and emotional journey told through music. With the arc of an arm or the twist of a torso, the dancers stretch the imaginations of their audiences, telling stories and transforming from one shape to another.

In the performance, Vivaldi’s Four Seasons springs to life as the dancers’ bodies transform into a mountain, an elephant, a dragon, even a helicopter, and travel the world from Paris to Beijing in under 10 minutes! Animated entirely by shadows, the moves of the dancers create a kaleidoscope of colorful storytelling that will awe and astound viewers.

“Magic Shadows” is a wonderful, family-friendly show full of laughs, emotion, and miraculous visual changes. Patrons will leave happy and will never look at their own shadow the same way again!

In a pre-performance workshop with Catapult’s dancers, participants will have the opportunity to create many of the shadows that Catapult makes as part of its show. Attendees from ages 6 + will learn how to create hand shadows, body shadows, duet shadows, and group shadows. The workshop will also cover the history of shadow puppetry and some of the weird scientific properties of shadows.

Participation in the 6:30 PM Magic Shadows by Catapult Workshop can be secured for $5 per person (space is limited!). Tickets for the 8 PM show are $15 for adults, $12 for members, and $8 for children and can be purchased at: https://www.flushingtownhall.org/event-detail.php?id=889

seaportmuseum.org/family-activity-weekends

November 2025: Sailors Scrimshaw

Join the Seaport Museum every weekend throughout November for an all-ages scrimshaw activity! Scrimshaw is a form of folk art from around the second quarter of the 19th century until the early 20th century. Usually made by whalers at sea, scrimshaw was often made by engraving designs on whale ivory and bone. Historically, this practice also included carved and built-up “utilitarian” items such as cooking utensils, hair and clothing accessories, household goods, and more.

Get inspired by scrimshaw on view in the Maritime City exhibition and then come to the Museum’s 207 Water Street program space for an update on this maritime tradition. Using recycled plastic in place of ivory and push pins instead of carving knives, learn this artistic etching technique and take home your very own hand-made scrimshaw items.

This activity is open to all ages, though children under 5 may find etching challenging. For those who prefer not to etch, we’ll provide crayons and a whale tooth printout so everyone can still join in the fun without using sharp objects. Bring the whole family and create something special together!

This activity will be offered Saturdays and Sundays from November 1 through November 30. Access to 207 Water Street includes walking up and down a few stairs.
