I started this blog with one daughter, kept it up with the other, to spend time together doing something we enjoyed.
However, things change and people evolve. My daughters are older, busier, and not as interested in writing.
From now on this blog will be mostly mom with occasional contributions from my daughters and maybe even my husband.
Nothing else will change. We'll still focus on sharing fun places to go, fun things to do, and more, and we would  still love to hear your views too

3) A Hundred Circling Camps

During the summer of 1932, over 20,000 people hopped trains to Washington D.C. and camped out to demand fair pay for veterans of the World War. The legacy of the Bonus Army is written into our laws and culture, but the march has been largely forgotten. As America protests and forgets and protests and forgets, what is carried forward? A Hundred Circling Camps explores the history of protest camps and what it means to live in public as an act of resistance.

Coney Island Nursery Rhyme is a historical fiction set in Connecticut and New York in the 1930’s. Based on a true story, it follows the esteemed incubator-doctor, showman, and unofficial father of Neonatology, Martin A. Couney. In a time where a eugenics-focused medical culture refused to employ incubator technology, Couney took it upon himself to save premature babies in his own incubators at a sideshow at Coney Island where funds were used to hire nurses and essentially create an unofficial hospital. We focus on Beatrice Winthrop, a woman from the American gentry who seeks Couney's assistance after giving birth prematurely.

7) The Delicate Tears of the Waning Moon

The Delicate Tears of the Waning Moon (Las Dedicadas Lágrimas de la Luna Menguante), inspired by true events, is about human rights violations suffered by those fighting for and communicating truth. The play follows Paulina, a human rights journalist and a determined advocate for victims of femicide and indigenous ethnicities, who has recently emerged from a coma after a brutal attack. She needs to recover her memory and reveal the truth to achieve justice. She only remembers her mother and her daughter. Rodrigo, by her side, makes unimaginable efforts to assist her. In The Delicate Tears of the Waning Moon, two journalists are immersed in a world of violence where cruelty is a habit, impunity is routine, freedom is a utopia, and telling the truth is the greatest risk.

10) La Viuda

La Viuda by María Irene Fornés written in 1961, boldly introduces Fornés’ groundbreaking avant-garde theatre. La Viuda is drawn from letters written to her great-grandfather in the late 19th century, immediately following the Spanish American War that helped secure Cuba’s liberation from Spain. Angela, a Cuban woman who fled to Spain, sues for the protection of her island property and her dignity in letters to her lawyer while memories of her deceased husband, her child, and more flood the stage. Resonating with the mid-century Cuban Revolution, La Viuda challenges U.S. intervention that so disrupted Cuban life.

A Christmas Carol The Musical

11/7/24 - 1/5/25

Broadway heavy hitters Alan Menken (Disney's Beauty and the BeastDisney's The Little MermaidLittle Shop of Horrors) and Lynn Ahrens (Ragtime, SeussicalOnce on This Island), breathe fantastic new life into the classic tale of A Christmas Carol.

Ebenezer Scrooge is a prosperous curmudgeon who believes that personal wealth is far more valuable than the happiness and comfort of others. With an infuriated "Bah! Humbug!" Scrooge summates his feelings of Christmas tidings and charitable giving, but he's forced to face his selfish ways when three ghosts on Christmas Eve lead him through his Past, Present and Future. Thanks to their guidance, Scrooge recognizes his faults and greets Christmas morning with a cheerful "Happy Christmas" before spending the day reconnecting and sharing love with those that mean the most to him.

A Christmas Carol is a spectacular adaptation of Charles Dickens' most well-known story.

Jersey Boys

1/23/25 - 4/6/25

With phenomenal music, memorable characters, and great storytelling, JERSEY BOYS follows the fascinating evolution of four blue-collar kids who became one of the greatest successes in pop music history. Winner of Best Musical at both the Tony Awards® and Olivier Awards®, JERSEY BOYS takes you behind the music of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons to discover the secret of a 40-year friendship as the foursome work their way from the streets of New Jersey to the heights of stardom. Audiences will be thrilled with electrifying performances of chart-topping hits, including “Sherry,” “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You,” “Dawn,” and “My Eyes Adored You,” which brought The Four Seasons the highest honor: induction into the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame.

Fiddler on The Roof

4/24/25 - 6/15/25

Winner of nine Tony Awards when it debuted in 1964, Fiddler on the Roof is the brainchild of Broadway legends, Jerome Robbins and Harold Prince; songwriters, Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick; and bookwriter, Joseph Stein. Touching audiences worldwide with its humor, warmth and honesty, this universal show is a staple of the musical theatre canon.

Set in the little village of Anatevka, the story centers on Tevye, a poor milkman, his wife, and his five daughters. With the help of a colorful and tight-knit Jewish community, Tevye tries to protect his daughters and instill them with traditional values in the face of changing social mores and the growing anti-Semitism of Czarist Russia. Rich in historical and ethnic detail, Fiddler on the Roof's universal theme of tradition cuts across barriers of race, class, nationality, and religion, leaving audiences crying tears of laughter, joy, and sadness.

The Music Man

7/10/25 - 8/31/25

By turns wicked, funny, warm, romantic, and touching, The Music Man is family entertainment at its best. Meredith Willson's six-time Tony Award-winning musical comedy has been entertaining audiences since 1957 and is a family-friendly story to be shared with every generation.

The Music Man follows fast-talking traveling salesman Harold Hill, as he cons the people of River City, Iowa, into buying instruments and uniforms for a boys' band that he vows to organize – this, despite the fact that he doesn't know a trombone from a treble clef. His plans to skip town with the cash are foiled when he falls for Marian, the librarian, who transforms him into a respectable citizen by curtain's fall.

S.S. Rajamouli, 2022, India, 187m
English and Telugu with English subtitles
In the summer of 2022, Telugu-language cinema was thrust into the American pop-cultural limelight thanks to the unprecedented box office success of RRR, S.S. Rajamouli’s 1920-set action blockbuster, which charts an imaginary friendship between real-life anti-colonial revolutionaries Komaram Bheem (N.T. Rama Rao, Jr.), a leader of India’s marginalized Gond tribe, and A. Rama Raju (Ram Charan), an officer of the Indian Imperial Police with mysterious personal objectives. Described in Film Comment as “preposterously entertaining,” the film toggles between registers, alternating the good-humored buoyancy and warmth of a classic buddy comedy with the earnest emotional and metaphorical intensity of mythically inflected melodrama. Rajamouli expertly deploys these tonal dynamics in service of an extraordinary cinematic spectacle, which dazzles on the big screen thanks to its sweeping, inventively choreographed and masterfully edited action sequences—plus the showstopping dance number “Naatu Naatu,” for which composer M.M. Keeravani became the first Indian artist to win the Academy Award for Best Original Song.

Obie Award-winning writer/director Shayok Misha Chowdhury's recent play, Public Obscenities, was singled out as one of the best theater works of 2023 by The New Yorker. His newest work is a performance memoir created with his mother, the physicist Bulbul Chakraborty. Chakraborty's specialty is the titular science of rheology, the laws governing the malleability and movement of matter under force. Another of her loves is the poetic songs of Bengali composer Rabindranath Tagore. These songs paint glorious pictures about the drama of nature: monsoons produce drum-like thunder claps, rivers let loose their long hair into waterfalls, music flows through generations. Chakraborty learned these songs from her foremothers, then passed them on to Misha. In this concert production of reimagined Tagore compositions, an artist son studies his physicist mother while she studies the strange behavior of sand. Together, they try to understand the science and the story of how things flow.
Run time: approximately 1 hour 15 minutes

Little Island recently announced the line-up for The Glade Series, an array of free-to-the-public live performances, launching July 10. These events will take place Wednesday through Sunday for seven weeks inside the Island’s 200-seat venue. This announcement comes on the heels of the sold-out run of Twyla Tharp, T Bone Burnett, and David Mansfield’s How Long Blues, which opened Little Island’s blockbuster summer season of world premiere events.

From July 10-14, each night of Pulitzer Prize winning playwright Suzan-Lori Parks’s Tell Me More series will thoughtfully pair a musical performance with a conversation between Parks and an expert from a different field. On July 10, for an evening themed “Greens & Blues,” a set by blues legend Ruthie Foster will precede a talk between Parks and Majora Carter, founder of Sustainable South Bronx. Other guests include designer Daisy Wang, who will also dress Lori-Parks, freestyle MC Corey James Gray, Columbia astronomy professor Jane Huang, harpist Brandee Younger, historian Eric Foner, and Parks’ own Psychedelic Soap Box, a post-bop jazz collective with spoken word. On Saturday July 13, Parks will invite the audience into one of her engaging Watch Me Work sessions, alongside a very special guest, before taking the stage with her band Sula & the Joyful Noise.

Taking the Glade stage from July 17-21 will be “wondrous” (The New York Times) dancer Melissa Toogood, in an intimate epilogue to Pam Tanowitz’s Day for Night, playing concurrently in Little Island’s Amphitheater (The Amph).

Mx Justin Vivian Bond, downtown cabaret legend and recent recipient of the first Judy Icon Award, will play five nights from July 24-28.

The Island will host a one-of-a-kind Oyster Market, July 31-August 4, curated and overseen by New Amsterdam Market founder and culinary world all-star Robert LaValva. Alongside live oyster shucking, the market will feature local vendors selling their unique culinary creations, which pair perfectly with The Oyster Radio Hour playing simultaneously in The Amph.

Then, from August 7-11, Morgan Jay returns to Little Island for his third consecutive summer to host and curate a week of comedy, including acts by Jay Jurden, Neel Gosh, and Sarah Tollemache

From August 14-18, linguists Ross Perlin and Daniel Kaufman, co-founders of the Endangered Language Alliance, will collaborate with Michael Leibenluft and Gung Ho Projects to create a series of performances about the past, present, and future of the world’s most linguistically diverse city. The series will be led by speakers of endangered, Indigenous, and minority languages, talking about their communities in their own words and in their own languages, alongside poetry, music, and movement, with texts based on Perlin's Language City: The Fight to Preserve Endangered Mother Tongues in New York. A multilingual soundscape will draw on ELA’s digital language archive, with its recordings in more than one hundred languages, as well as visual elements from ELA’s digital landscape map and creative translanguaging translation strategies.

From August 21-25, Grammy Award-winning artist Cécile McLorin Salvant will lend her curatorial vision to the Glade, programming a set of performances by other musicians at the vanguard of their styles and forms, including jazz vocalist Vanisha Gould, folk artist June McDoom, multi-instrumentalist Lua Noah, pianist Sullivan Fortner, and more.

Closing out summer in the Glade, from August 28-September 1, Gio Escobar will host a series of unique, genre-bending experiences, including a bomba and a salsa night, before taking the stage with his own avant-garde collective, Standing on the Corner.

Tickets to Little Island’s summer season of performances, as well as information on free programs, are available at littleisland.org.

22) TRASHFEST & DARKFEST

JULY 15 – 21, 2024

AT THE TANK

The Tank (Meghan Finn, Artistic Director; Johnny G. Lloyd, Director of Artistic Development; Molly Fitzmaurice, Managing Producer) announced today programming for their eco-forward festivals, TrashFest and DarkFest, from Monday July 15 – Sunday July 21, 2024. Both festivals will take place at The Tank’s 56 Seat Theater (312 West 36th St New York, NY 10018).

For 11 years, The Tank has hosted DarkFest - a week of shows that do not use conventional theatrical lighting in an effort to reexamine how we can make theater more sustainable. With the pandemic forcing their physical theater to close, they challenged that idea further with the first annual TrashFest in 2020. It is often difficult to wrestle with the environmental impact our daily lives and our work can have - especially in theater, where so many resources are needed to develop sets, props, and costumes that are only used for a short amount of time. TrashFest centers work that not only produces no waste, but reuses materials discarded as garbage while DarkFest celebrates innovative performance that utilizes self-sufficient and alternative energy sources.

More information about the programming is below. Tickets begin at $15 and are available by visiting https://thetanknyc.org/trashfestdarkfest2024.

CLIMATE CONTROLLED FACILITY WITH ELEVATOR ACCESS AND OTHER AMENITIES

Co-Directed & Co-Written by Kate O’Carroll & Elena Messinger

Monday July 15 at 7pm

Molly, Cam, and Georgia are all moving up and out: back home, a girlfriend’s apartment, a goat farm. But first they have to deal with all their shit. Spend one last sweltering day in a storage unit digging through shared memories, deciding what to leave behind, and fighting over that one lamp.

PLANTING DAY

Written & Directed by Claire Marieb

Monday July 15 at 7pm

Planting Day grapples with the inescapable fact that two things can be true at the same time. It follows a couple's moral dilemma of wanting to start a family while facing a world that is slowly burning. We see a young queer individual struggle to find their place in the universe while finding love (or something of the sort) in an unlikely place. We get an intimate view into the world of a young man navigating new love in a post-chivalrous, pre-apocalyptic world. A mom finds herself unsure how to generationally relate to her daughter. And of course, George the dolphin is there to watch it all unfold from his throne in the nightmarescape, falling victim to his meddling habit once or twice along the way. But please, hold the popcorn...plastic's back on the menu.

She’s getting desperate for advice – so desperate, she’s turning to her dead Latvian Jewish ancestors. Ashkenazi Seance is a solo theatre piece with music and community ritual exploring what it means to search for home and crave connection to your ancestors, even when you’re ~pretty sure~ they wouldn’t like you.

LITTLE QUEER

Written & Performed by Christopher Ryan Quiroz (he/him)

Directed by Asher Vickers

Thursday July 18 at 9:30pm

If big things come in small packages, little QUEER is no exception. A hilarious and heartfelt pop-culture-soaked journey down the fabulous and traumatic hall of memory through the vibrant world of Queer theatre and pop culture. This is a show for boys who were taught to hide what makes them unique. Being sensitive in this world is hard -being a sensitive, short (5’2”), autistic, Queer boy in this world is a recipe for...experiences.

What does abandonment do to a child? Do you ever recover from a bully’s words? Was your Dad ever your best friend? Was he your nightmare? How can you transform trauma into something useful? little QUEER offers a space for all of us to breathe, reflect and gently uncover what lies inside the makeup case we’ve all kept buried.

A solo about reclaiming forgotten memories, celebrating fierce identity, and a testament to the healing power of love. An invitation to laugh, cry, and give the middle finger to your bully. For the sensitive boys – the sensitive kids who always felt a little different, this is your story, too.

GOOD ART FRIENDS PRESENTS: TRASH TRAWL

Performed & Created by Wanda Noonan & Hero Magnus

Friday July 19 at 9:30pm

While walking the riverbank in New Orleans, Wanda and Hero come upon Trash Mountain: heaping carcasses of each briefly famous and soon-to-be-scorned internet article ever devised. Do Wanda and Hero recycle the remnants and leave things better than they found them? Or, do they set it all on fire, in front of everyone, at The Tank?

For TrashFest, Good Art Friends presents Trash Trawl: a theatrical challenge to the boom-bust-discard-move-on cycle inherent to internet discourse. Join the duo for songs and prose, grunge and flair, excerpts from their musical, and questions like: “Could Wanda date a horse, if she really tried?”

GOOD ART FRIENDS is Gen Z musician Hero Magnus and millennial essayist Wanda Noonan. Wanda, a 2D animator turned writer, is a big-city lesbian often accused of extraversion – now on tour for her in-progress nonfiction essay collection. Hero is a princess and a bitch and also a bit sensitive and spent the past year recording her debut album in New Orleans and Brooklyn with the support of the Gordon Grand fellowship from Yale.

Each play serves a bite-size portion of weirdness, ensuring an unforgettable night of twisted humor and spine-chilling surprises.
