A) Beginning Performances

1) How to Steal an Election

Brown and Brand had the notion of Jazz Age President Calvin Coolidge materializing in the present day (that is, 1968). There he meets a couple of fervent young protesters, just back from the skull-cracking Democratic National Convention in Chicago. Disillusioned, these two protesters have no taste for the political machine. But what’s wrong with pragmatism, Coolidge asks them? What about learning to work within a corrupt system? Thus, Coolidge begins his history lesson, with vignettes and songs depicting cynical power grabs of yore. How to Steal an Election opened to rave reviews at Off-Broadway’s Pocket Theatre in 1968 and after 50 performances, the show was set to move to Broadway. But there was a glitch-according to Oscar Brand, the $80,000 lined up for the move was Mob money. The authors refused to cooperate; end of deal, end of production. Until now!

In A Tailor Near Me, a man goes to a tailor to have his suit pants let out because he's gained some weight since he last wore them. The tailor convinces him that what he really needs is a new suit, which leads to a negotiation, which leads to the making of a bespoke suit, which leads to alterations in both of their lives. Directed by James Glossman, the two-handed comedy stars Tony Nominee Richard Kind (East New York; Curb Your Enthusiasm) and James Pickens, Jr. (Grey’s Anatomy; X-Files)

3) Ballet Hispánico School of Dance

Announces New Class Offering: Pa’lante Program

part of La Academia: Professional Studies

Ballet Hispánico School of Dance announces a new offering, the Pa’lante Program, a tuition-based training program that was inspired by and expands upon the success of the Company’s Pa’lante Scholars initiative, launched two years ago. Part of La Academia, the Professional Studies arm of the School of Dance, the Pa’lante Program will offer students the opportunity to study under the unique Ballet Hispánico training model and methodologies.

The new program immerses young dancers into a professional setting, focusing on artistry development through Ballet Hispánico's accredited comprehensive and holistic curriculum, including classical ballet technique, multiple contemporary dance styles, pointe work, partnering, repertory, conditioning, choreography, and specialty classes such as hip hop, salsa, and flamenco. Students will also participate in professional seminars in career planning, dance history, financial literacy, auditioning strategies, and networking. Individualized coaching and mentorship will be provided by the directors of the program, as well as other members of the Ballet Hispánico artistic team.

Pa'lante Program performance opportunities may include performances at the Company’s black box theater, at community events, and for engagement programs. Students will also perform as part of the School of Dance's annual Winter Showcase in February and Spring Performances. Dancers will have the opportunity to be selected to work with choreographers on new creations and/or repertory and are eligible to be considered to perform and/or tour as opportunities arise.

5) New film series explores how three MIT Solve innovators are changing the world

If the idea gets traction, it can mean months and years of development, pitch meetings, tech revisions, and funding challenges. The pace is brutal, but for a small group of people looking to create radical, systemic change—it’s all worth it. The Big Idea is a three-part documentary short film series that follows the lives of three innovators who are brilliant, bold, and united by the desire to use technology, science, and engineering to solve global challenges. From access to life-saving vaccines, to antiracist technology aimed at reducing the Black maternal mortality rates, to hands-on robot-building kits for underserved Indigenous youth, their big ideas are meant to shake up the status quo and ultimately change lives. Each of the subjects is competing to be an MIT Solve innovator, or ‘Solver’, a highly-coveted  program to help scale and grow their big idea. This win would raise the profile of their projects and put them in front of the MIT community, global leaders, and major tech brands. But, do they have what it takes to elevate their work to the next level? The films have been an official selection of eight film festivals, including the Tribeca X Festival and the Women Deliver Festival, and have won numerous awards from the Telly Awards, Series Fest, and IFFBoston for unscripted storytelling. The Sol Project, the Obie Award-winning national theater initiative dedicated to amplifying Latiné voices and building a body of work for the new American theater, announced today full details for the sixth annual SolFest: A Latiné Theatre Festival, produced in partnership with Pregones/Puerto Rican Traveling Theater (Pregones/PRTT). The five-day program runs August 27-31 with both online and in-person events including four evenings of live programming at PRTT in Manhattan (304 W 47th Street, New York, NY 10036). Steeped in the grand tradition of the American songbook, Gary Clark Jr. has emerged as a 21st-century rock ‘n’ roll messiah; a blues virtuoso who blends in reggae, punk, R&B, hip-hop, and soul, re-shaping the genre for our time. He’s been doing his thing since he was a kid in Texas, but made global waves in 2014 following his first Grammy® Award: Best Traditional R&B Performance for “Please Come Home” from his 2012 debut Blak And Blu.

Clark ascended to greater heights in 2019 with his third full-length album, the sensual and socially conscious This Land, which hit #6 on the Billboard Top 200, his third consecutive Top 10 debut. This Land garnered acclaim from The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Los Angeles Times, Rolling Stone, Pitchfork, and many more. Clark topped bills at festivals and venues like the Hollywood Bowl, made appearances sharing the stage with The Rolling Stones, and performed at the White House for the Obamas.

In 2020, Clark cleaned up at the Grammys®,  taking home Best Rock Performance and Best Rock Song (“This Land”), and Best Contemporary Blues Album. He performed “This Land” backed by The Roots during the ceremony, releasing the live version as a single. To date, Clark has six Grammy® nominations and four wins. He has performed on national TV, making stops at Saturday Night Live, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, and more. Clark is currently working on a follow-up to This Land, continuing to experiment and push the possibilities of American roots music.

The York Theater Company presents 18 Minutes of Fame starring Barbara Minkus, written by Susan Morgenstern and Barbara Minkus. Making her York Theatre debut, Broadway, film, and television singer/actress Barbara Minkus shares an intimate performance of personal moments, funny and poignant songs, and remarkable stories of working with such luminaries as Danny Kaye, Merv Griffin, Jerry Lewis, and Charlotte Rae. While searching for fame throughout her life, Barbara found a lot more than she bargained for. In her delightfully engaging story - which has been presented a number of times in California-- Barbara shares an exceptional journey of love, life, difficult decisions, family dynamics and more. In concert with the presentation of How to Steal an Election, Barbara is adding special songs and stories to her show recounting her time working with composer/lyricist Oscar Brand and director George Abbott on The Education of H*YM*AN K*AP*LA*N, in which she starred on Broadway in 1968. 18 Minutes of Fame is directed by Susan Morgenstern, with musical direction by Ron Barnett. Performances are Monday, August 28 at 7:30 p.m. and Tuesday, August 29 at 1:00 p.m at the Theatre at St. Jean's (150 E. 76th St.)
