I started this blog with one daughter, kept it up with the other, to spend time together doing something we enjoyed.
However, things change and people evolve. My daughters are older, busier, and not as interested in writing.
From now on this blog will be mostly mom with occasional contributions from my daughters and maybe even my husband.
Nothing else will change. We'll still focus on sharing fun places to go, fun things to do, and more, and we would  still love to hear your views too

4) Wonderland Dreams

Wonderland Dreams is hand-painted from floor-to-ceiling. The massive 26,000 sq. ft. venue showcases Meade's signature 3D painting style which makes the world appear to be a 2D picture on canvas.

The interactive art exhibit has welcomed more than 100,000 guests since its opening in October 2022, hosted hundreds of live music, dance and fashion events, birthday parties, romantic engagement proposals, and industry nights with countless stars from Broadway and film.

Transported into a magical dreamscape, guests are enveloped by fantastical interconnected rooms – each its own masterful gallery – featuring dimension-bending art, blurring the lines between illusion and reality. Guests are provided with painted costumes and props, inviting them to become part of the art in this one-of-a-kind living exhibit.

Visitors become part of the art as they enter a whimsical world inspired by Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, the beloved classic tale by Lewis Carroll. Depth and scale dramatically shift from tiny houses to a larger-than-life Queen of Hearts Throne, and guests engage with interactive props from the Mad Hatters tea party to giant playing cards, color changing mushrooms and secret rose gardens.

Wonderland Dreams has a DIY painting studio and imaginative merchandise items that can be painted on site. The exhibit also has a wine bar with themed small plates.

9) Flushing Town Hall Presents U.S. Premiere of Award-Winning “Paper Play,”
a Taiwanese Puppet Show for All Ages

On Sunday, August 13, Flushing Town Hall will present the award-winning Paper Play by Puppet Beings Theatre. Families are invited to join a 1 PM workshop prior to the 2:15 PM family show.

An instant classic created by Puppet Beings Theatre, Paper Play will delight audiences of all ages with its unique stage, puppets, and props—all made entirely from paper! In this way, Paper Play ingeniously promotes the idea of a one-material Object Theater, which is a form of modern puppetry that utilizes everyday objects as the main characters and elements of a performance, leading young audiences into a world of unbounded imagination and diverse creativity. Folding and joining this everyday object in creative ways, the production completely reimagines paper as a storytelling and creative medium.

In their performance at Flushing Town Hall, the artists from Taiwan will present two stories:

“The Park”: As a little boy plays with a ball in the park, it unexpectedly brings him closer to an old man he had once feared. Puppets, lights, and music bring to life this touching story of caring for the elderly.

“The Paper Play”: In a wild and creative ride, paper is playfully transformed into a wide range of different characters, completely reimagining the properties and possibilities of your everyday writing sheet.

Both “The Park” and “The Paper Play” will take audiences on an adventure filled with wonder and laughter, offering magical moments of playfulness and discovery.

In the pre-performance workshop, participants of all ages will have the opportunity to create their own mini-performance using various shapes of paper.

11) PASTICHENYC proudly presents
a new 8- part musical audio comedy
GRACE UNDER PRESSURE

A woman’s work is what she makes it!

PASTICHEnyc

Proudly Presents

GRACE UNDER PRESSURE

A woman's iron is what she makes it!

Written and Directed by Emily King

Starring Alice King

grace-under-pressure.simplecast.com

From the acclaimed PASTICHENYC, who recently brought audiences Jane Austen’s Persuasion Song Cycle and Edith Wharton’s The House of Mirth Song Cycle comes the World Premiere of sparkling 8-part comedic, musical, radio drama series, original and unique, GRACE UNDER PRESSURE follows the simple story of a woman alone in New York in the ‘90s, an age of diminished expectations.

PASTICHENYC is pleased to announce their World Premiere podcast GRACE UNDER PRESSURE, written and directed by Emily King, the simple story of a woman alone in NYC in the '90s, falling down the socio-economic ladder to find her life's work and true love. The irreplaceable Alice King stars in the role of a lifetime. Just in time. Resurrected piano bars songs provide a Greek (diner) chorus. Corporate hanky-panky, art-world exploitation, pyramid schemes, and the AIDS crisis. What's not to like? The first two episodes will be released on June 15th wherever you listen to your favorite podcasts, and an episode a week for the subsequent seven weeks. Listen, rate, review, and subscribe now at https://grace-under-pressure.simplecast.com/.

Inappropriate affairs, office sexual politics, pyramid scheme fraud, cynical art-world pay-to-play, sweatshop fashion, and even the AIDS crisis, dealing with the light touch, suggestive humor, and speedy delivery of screwball comedy.

GRACE UNDER PRESSURE began as an Off-Off Broadway project in 1992, staged initially as an 8-part radio play complete with manic sound man, theme song, and additional musical interludes. The part of Grace was written for the sublime Alice King and, thirty years later, it became clear that it was time for Grace to make a comeback. A cast of first-class New York voice talent is led by Alice King as Grace McMoon, our heroine who loses her job in every episode and slides down the socio-economic ladder to find true love, fulfillment, and job satisfaction. Each episode is complemented by the Singer-Songwriter acting as a kind of Greek chorus, with a musical interlude from a trove of original ‘90s piano-bar ballads. Created, written, produced, edited, and directed – and inspired – by New York City working women.

Objects come to life in the US Premiere of Montreal's Scapegoat Carnivale’s hit show Sapientia. The production will play the International Puppet Fringe Festival NYC for three performances in August. Sapientia won the Montreal English Theatre Award (META) for Outstanding Independent Production, and in 2019 the company received a META award for Outstanding Theatrical  Contribution.

To stage this story, director Mia van Leeuwen uses object theatre, a form of puppetry where performers animate found, everyday objects to tell a story, e.g., a mirror, an espresso maker and tea cups. Sapientia is a rare production from the first female playwright, 10th-century writer Hroswitha of Gandersheim and was adapted by Joseph Shragge from a literal translation from Latin text by Lynn Kozak. Opening night is August 11 at 6pm, with additional performances on Saturday, August 12 at 8pm, and Sunday, August 13 at 3pm.

19) 'NIGHT OF THE MURDERED POETS' COMMEMORATION
SET FOR AUGUST 10 AT THE WILD PROJECT

Covert Group Execution Followed Assassination of Famed
Jewish Actor/Director Solomon Mikhoels 75 Years Ago

On the night of August 12, 1952, 13 Jewish writers, artists, journalists, and scientists were executed by a firing squad in Moscow’s infamous Lubyanka prison after years of confinement and torture to extract false confessions of treason and espionage. This mass execution, which would become known as the “Night of the Murdered Poets,” was one of Joseph Stalin’s last crimes before his death six months later.

Following years of repression of Yiddish and Jewish culture, a renewed campaign began in 1948 after the state-sponsored assassination of Solomon Mikhoels, who had led the Moscow State Jewish Theatre (GOSET). Mikhoels also led the Soviet Jewish Anti-Fascist Committee (JAC), formed during World War II to drum up Jewish support in the free world for the Soviet war effort. The truth about Solomon Mikhoels death (staged as an automobile hit-and-run in Minsk in 1948) was poorly concealed even then and publicly confirmed soon after Stalin's death. The remaining members of the JAC were arrested beginning later that same year.

Among the casualties of the “Night of the Murdered Poets” were five Yiddish writers who were members of the JAC: David Bergelson, David Hofshteyn, Perets Markish, Itsik Fefer, and Leyb Kvitko, as well as legendary actor and Mikhoels' successor as director of the GOSET, Benjamin Zuskin. Every year since the murders were revealed, Yiddishist organizations wordwide have honored the victims of that awful night, along with other victims of Soviet repression, with a memorial evening.

The five writers were all born in the region that now makes up independent Ukraine. Even as that country is today aflame with war, COJECO BluePrint fellow Yelena Shmulenson (herself a native of Crimea) offers a new staged documentary, examining how the Soviet state repressed Yiddish culture, to be performed on Thursday, August 10 at 7 pm.

Appearing in the upcoming program, sponsored by the Congress for Jewish Culture together with COJECO, are Shmulenson and her husband Allen Lewis Rickman, both stars of stage and screen in English & Yiddish (the Coen brothers’ A Serious Man, Off-Broadway’s Tevye Served Raw), along with Suzanne Toren and Shane Baker. This performance will be in English, Yiddish and Russian, with English supertitles.

The Wild Project is located at 195 East 3rd Street, between Avenues A & B. Reservations are $10 and can be made through www.brownpapertickets.com. For more information, visit www.CongressForJewishCulture.org or call 212-505-8040.
