I started this blog with one daughter, kept it up with the other, to spend time together doing something we enjoyed.
However, things change and people evolve. My daughters are older, busier, and not as interested in writing.
From now on this blog will be mostly mom with occasional contributions from my daughters and maybe even my husband.
Nothing else will change. We'll still focus on sharing fun places to go, fun things to do, and more, and we would  still love to hear your views too

2) Dear World

With its premiere in 1969, Dear World made Jerry Herman the first composer-lyricist in history to have three shows running simultaneously on Broadway, each centered around a uniquely larger-than-life leading lady. But while the names Dolly Levi (Hello, Dolly!) and Mame Dennis (Mame) are familiar to all theater lovers, Dear World’s Countess Aurelia—a fabulous relic of fin-de-siecle Paris struggling to save her way of life—might not be as recognizable, despite the fact that the role won Angela Lansbury her second Tony Award after Mame.

New York City Center (130 W. 56th St.)
3/15 - 3/19

For more information or to purchase tickets, visit www.nycitycenter.org

3) Hang Time

Three men chew the fat under an old, wide tree. In HANG TIME, we peek into the interiority – the great loves and bitter blues – of Black men in America. Setting the romantic and the macabre in sharp relief, HANG TIME invites the viewer to envisage the living Black body triumphant over the legacy of violence that it holds.

The Flea (20 Thomas Street)

4) The Hunting Gun

Three letters.
One tragedy.

Josuke Misugi receives three letters from different women: his wife, his mistress and her daughter. The first is from young Shoko, who just discovered her mother’s affair through the reading of her diary. The second is from his wife Midori, revealing she’s known about the infidelity from the start. And the third is a farewell from Saiko, his lover of thirteen years: “By the time you read this, I will no longer be among the living.”

Weaving these three viewpoints with consummate skill, one of Japan’s most celebrated authors Yarushi Inoue gives universal resonance to Misugi’s demise. He turns what could have been the mundane account of adultery into a compelling love story that is considered a classic of world literature.

This stage adaptation is a monologue for three voices, and a single actress embodies all three women, transforming before our eyes. At the end of her letter, Shoko drops her school uniform to reveal Midori’s exuberant outfit who, in turn, undresses to slip into Saiko’s funeral kimono.

Behind a scrim presenting fragments of letters, the increasingly tormented hunter Josuke Misugi cleans his gun. He seems to exist in a different time space. The simple action he performs, which would normally take only a few minutes, is stretched through the entire duration of the play: piking up his gun in ultra-slow-motion, inspecting it, meticulously cleaning its barrels and finally standing to aim at his wife’s back.

Borrowing from Japanese Zen aesthetics, the set’s floor is successively draped with three fundamental elements: water, stone, and wood. After Shoko wanders in a lily pond, the waters withdraw to reveal a terrain of smooth black stones. Then, at the climax of Midori’s rage, the stones magically vanish to expose a wooden deck on which Saiko recites her suicide letter.

After a cargo ship sinks in the middle of the vast Pacific Ocean, a sixteen-year-old boy name Pi is stranded on a lifeboat with four other survivors – a hyena, a zebra, an orangutan, and a 450-pound Royal Bengal tiger. Time is against them, nature is harsh, who will survive?

6) This G*d Damn House

Jet lagged, without warning, Danny is summoned from NYC by his brother Jacob to Florida. Their mother has 24 hrs to vacate their childhood home. The problem is, their mother is a hoarder and the house is an indoor trash heap. The brothers dig through the filth and garbage with memories, trauma, and the past rising to the surface as the deadline closes in.

Living together was going just great for gay besties Bunting and Finch: balancing ruthless day jobs with aspiring visual arts careers, while still finding time to blackout at Hardware after one too many vodka sodas. But when Finch starts dating a wealthy pharma daddy finance bro, the intertwining web of Gay New York proves just how toxic and self-destructive it can be. Rough Trade is a vicious comedy about classism, chosen family, and holding on (too) tightly to the ones you love.

10) Hadestown

Tom Hewitt extends run as Hades to 6/4

Lilliias White extends run as Hermes to 6/4

Jewelle Blackman extends run as Persephone to 6/26

Following two intertwining love stories — that of young dreamers Orpheus and Eurydice, and that of King Hades and his wife Persephone — Hadestown invites audiences on a hell-raising journey to the underworld and back. Mitchell’s beguiling melodies and Chavkin’s poetic imagination pit industry against nature, doubt against faith, and fear against love. Performed by a vibrant ensemble of actors, dancers, and singers, Hadestown delivers a deeply resonant and defiantly hopeful theatrical experience.

Walter Kerr Theatre (219 West 48th St.)

For more information or to purchase tickets, visit www.hadestown.com

11) Little Shop of Horrors

Maude Apatow extends run as Audrey to 4/30

Seymour is a down-on-his-luck florist with a crush on his co-worker Audrey. When he discovers a mysterious – and voracious – plant, suddenly Seymour and Audrey are thrust into an epic battle that will determine the fate of the entire human race. LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS first premiered Off-Broadway in 1982, where it made audiences laugh, scream, and give up gardening for good. The musical has since catapulted into a global phenomenon, with productions across the world from Broadway to London’s West End, to Asia and Australia – plus a hit 1986 film adaptation directed by Frank Oz that starred Rick Moranis, Ellen Greene and Steve Martin. Now, the musical has made its highly-anticipated return home to Off-Broadway, in an intimate new production directed by Michael Mayer that offers an unprecedented opportunity to get close — maybe too close — to an incredible plant with an insatiable appetite.

Want to find out what really happened to Jack and Rose on that fateful night? A one-of-a-kind musical voyage bursting with nostalgia, hilarity and heart, Titanique features powerhouse voices in show-stopping performances of such hits as “My Heart Will Go On,” “All By Myself”, and “To Love You More,” backed by the unparalleled energy of a full live band.

Princess Phooey, an original musical, is not your typical fairy tale, and Phooey is not your typical princess. She doesn’t want to curtsy, smile, or be rescued by a Prince (although he tries), because she can rescue herself, if need be, and she would rather run around with the chambermaids and the stable boys. Her older sister Elessia, along with the Good Fairies, try to make Phooey into what they consider a proper princess, while Morbidia has other plans for them all.

17)THE DRAMATISTS GUILD OF AMERICA INVITES ALL THEATRE WRITERS TO JOIN ITS FIRST EVER COMPENSATION STUDY

THE STUDY SEEKS TO OBTAIN MORE EQUITABLE TREATMENT FOR WRITERS BY DETERMINING HOW THEATRE WRITERS GET PAID AND WHAT IT MEANS TO BE PROFESSIONAL THEATRE WRITER

SIGN UP FOR THE STUDY HERE

The Dramatists Guild of America invites all theatre writers to participate in its first ever wide-ranging study examining the overall experience of what it means to be a professional theatre writer in the United States. This study will gather information from all theatre writers on what they are getting paid for their work in the industry, and the sources from which theatre writers derive their income, as well as the circumstances that impact current industry practices related to compensation for theatre writers.

Armed with this knowledge, the Guild will be able to bolster its advocacy efforts as it works to standardize best practices and recommended guidelines of equitable and better treatment for all theatre writers, bringing awareness and addressing disparities in treatment and pay amongst theatre writers themselves.

By participating in this study, you can be part of the conversation and help your community of theatre writers obtain fair treatment, livable wages, and a sustainable career. It’s time to give the theatre industry a wake-up call and rewrite the narrative on what it means to be a successful theatre writer in the United States. The Guild encourages you to tell your story, so that you can advocate for what your community needs and make your voice heard.

All writers, regardless of Guild membership, are encouraged to be a part of this study. Any writer who has had a show of theirs produced in any capacity is invited to participate. If you are not a DG member, you can sign up to participate here: https://zfrmz.com/4A0pJoEfDtqc25ASHiTG

18) Flushing Town Hall Welcomes Spring with its First-Ever Holi Music and Dance Festival

The traditional Hindu festival continues the institution’s tradition of welcoming multicultural artists and audiences to the Hall in the city’s most diverse borough

On Saturday, March 18, Flushing Town Hall will host Celebrate Holi!—a celebration of the new beginnings that come with the changing of the seasons.

Holi, known as the Festival of Colors, is one of the most popular festivals in Hinduism. The festival is celebrated as a way to welcome spring and is seen as a new beginning where people can release all their inhibitions and start fresh. Traditionally, festival participants throw powder dye into the air, covering all in attendance with vibrant colors. For some, the rich colors represent starting a vibrant new life. For others, washing off the dye at the end of the day represents cleansing oneself of evils and demons and a new commitment to living a good life. This year, those attending the Flushing Town Hall festival will throw colorful scarves and confetti to celebrate.

The Srijan Dance Company and its artistic director Abha Roy will join the Apoorva Mudgal Ensemble for a concert to celebrate the new season. The festival will feature performances of devotional and Hindustani classical raga music, traditional Kathak dance, a dance drama of Holi, folk dances, and more. The theme of this show is celebrating love and forgiveness.

24) McCarter Theatre Center
Presents
Ragamala Dance Company:
Fires of Varanasi: Dance of the Eternal Pilgrim
By Ranee Ramaswamy and Aparna Ramaswamy, Artistic Directors
March 15, 2023

Ragamala Dance Company’s 30th season continues with Fires of Varanasi, presented March 15, 2023, at 7:30pm at McCarter Theatre Center, 91 University Place, Princeton, NJ. Tickets start at $25 and are available at mccarter.org/season/2022-2023/ragamala-dance-company-the-fires-of-varanasi/.

Rooted in the expansive South Indian dance form of Bharatanatyam, Ragamala Dance Company manifests a kindred relationship between the ancient and the contemporary. In this evening-length performance, eleven dancers conjure a realm where time is suspended and humans merge with the divine. Award-winning creators Ranee Ramaswamy and Aparna Ramaswamy imagine a metaphorical crossing place that enters a ritualistic world of immortality, evoking the birth-death-rebirth continuum in Hindu thought to honor immigrant experiences of life and death in the diaspora. Fires of Varanasi evokes the spiritually electric city, described by mother and daughter in conversation with essayist Pico Iyer as a metaphor for the interconnectedness of life and death. The work features an original, recorded score and the lighting designs of French scenic and lighting designer Willy Cessa.

Monday, March 20, 7:30PM
Tickets $35–$45, Choose What You Pay

Experience highlights from six-time Grammy-winning composer Terence Blanchard’s haunting “opera in jazz.” Following their triumphant 2021 collaboration on Fire Shut Up in My Bones, Met Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin, director James Robinson, and choreographer Camille A. Brown reunite with Blanchard to explore the life of boxer Emile Griffith. Blanchard’s first opera, Champion tells the story of Griffith’s rise from obscurity to world champion, his struggle with his sexuality, and how a knockout of a homophobic rival in the early 1960s led to tragedy. Met General Manager Peter Gelb moderates a discussion with the creative team, and members of the cast perform selections from the opera.
