The Good John Proctor is a show about four of the young girls at the center of the Salem Witch Trials; Betty Parris, Abigail Williams, Mercy Lewis, and Mary Warren. It imagines their lives before the trials and what it is about these girls and their lives that could eventually have led to such tragedy. The girls are brilliantly played by Sharlene Cruz, Susannah Perkins, Tavi Gevinson, and Brittany K. Allen with a mix of innocence and worldliness that hints at the role that they will soon play in the notorious trials. Cruz is especially good as the particularly young, wide-eyed, and innocent Betty.
The show is extremely thought-provoking in that it really makes you think about how a group of regular young girls could cause such widespread panic and hysteria. Of course, that question can never really be answered but it's still interesting to see the playwright's take on some of the possible events that could foreshadow such a calamitous outcome.
