I started this blog with one daughter, kept it up with the other, to spend time together doing something we enjoyed.
However, things change and people evolve. My daughters are older, busier, and not as interested in writing.
From now on this blog will be mostly mom with occasional contributions from my daughters and maybe even my husband.
Nothing else will change. We'll still focus on sharing fun places to go, fun things to do, and more, and we would  still love to hear your views too

Still More Theater Saturday - Anyone Can Whistle

We were given complimentary tickets to Anyone Can Whistle for review purposes. Any and all opinions expressed here are our own.

What: Anyone Can Whistle

Where; Carnegie Hall
              881 7th Ave.
              New York, NY

When: This event took place on Thursday, March 10, 2022

MasterVoices recent production of Anyone Can Whistle took place at Carnegie Hall on Thursday, March 10, 2022.  The show originally played on Broadway for only 12 previews and 9 performances in 1964. This show and  Merrily We Roll Along have probably become Stephen Sondheim's most well-known and best-loved flops. Both have gained somewhat of a cult following over the years. Although neither has had another full Broadway production, there have been several full Off-Broadway and /or Off-Off-Broadway productions of Merrily We Roll Along with another one expected next season while Anyone Can Whistle has mostly received only staged concert productions.

The show revolves around a town where a corrupt mayor stages a fake miracle to draw tourists. However, she doesn't want the residents of the nearby asylum known as the Cookie Jar to partake in the miracle for fear that their very presence would expose the miracle for what it really is. It is kind of a strange show, and yet in some ways extremely timely. Along with MasterVoices, the show was performed by a stellar cast which included Vanessa Williams, Santino Fontana, and Elizabeth Stanley among others. They had the opportunity to show their chops performing some of Sondheim's best-loved songs including "There Won't Be Trumpets", "Everybody Says Don't", and the title song. In fact, the songs are probably much more familiar to most people than the show itself.  All in all, it was a very pleasant evening of musical theater.
