Books: The Match
Today we are recommending The Match by Harlan Coben. Wilde grew up alone in the wilderness, but now he has been matched with someone on one of those ancestry matching services who may be his father. However, when he meets his father the mystery only deepens so he goes in search of another alleged relative he has matched with to get some answers. Throw in a bunch of reality show contestants, some vigilantism, and a few murders and you have another great book by one of the masters of the genre. This book with its focus on reality show contestants is not only very original but in an age when our television lineup is overflowing with a plethora of reality shows, it is very timely as well. The main character and his background are extremely unique and interesting. The plot is exciting and keeps you guessing. The resolution to the story is satisfactory. All in all, it's a very enjoyable book.
Movies: Still Working 9 to 5
Today we are recommending Still Working 9 to 5. This documentary about the movie 9 to 5 examines not only the atmosphere in which the film was created and what they were trying to accomplish with it but also how much and how little things have changed since then with regard to women in the workplace. It provides interviews with the film's reunited stars, Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, and Dolly Parton as well as with others who appeared in or worked on the film. There are also numerous interviews with people who starred in or were involved with various other incarnations of the film including a television series and a stage musical as well as with prominent members of the women's movement then and now. Even though the numerous clips from the movie, the TV show, the musical. and more that are shown throughout the film might make you feel a little nostalgic, it is amazing how relevant this film still is even after more than 40 years. The movie even includes a new more serious slower duet version of the title song sung by Kelly Clarkson and Dolly Parton. All in all, it's a telling look at how far we have come and how far would haven't.
