I started this blog with one daughter, kept it up with the other, to spend time together doing something we enjoyed.
However, things change and people evolve. My daughters are older, busier, and not as interested in writing.
From now on this blog will be mostly mom with occasional contributions from my daughters and maybe even my husband.
Nothing else will change. We'll still focus on sharing fun places to go, fun things to do, and more, and we would  still love to hear your views too

AMERICAN SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA SALUTES THE GREAT DUKE ELLINGTON
THURSDAY MARCH 24 AT CARNEGIE HALL
All-Ellington Symphonic Program Features Marcus Roberts Trio and
Vocalist Catherine Russell
Music Director Leon Botstein will lead the American Symphony Orchestra on March 24 in a tribute to the genre-defying genius of the great Duke Ellington with an all-Ellington symphonic concert at Carnegie Hall, where the composer played a series of annual concerts and premiered many of his greatest works, including Black, Brown, and Beige and New World A-Comin’. The pieces will be performed for Jazz Trio and Large Orchestra by American jazz pianist, composer, arranger, bandleader, and teacher Marcus Roberts, who performs with his Marcus Roberts Trio. The evening also features Grammy Award-winning jazz vocalist Catherine Russell, best known for her album Harlem on my Mind and her appearance as a featured artist on the soundtrack album for the HBO TV series Boardwalk Empire.

Thursday, March 24, 2022 at 8 PM
Carnegie Hall (Stern Auditorium/Perelman Stage)
Leon Botstein, conductor
Marcus Roberts Trio
All-Ellington program
Black, Brown, and Beige Suite (Arr. Maurice Peress)
Satin Doll (Arr. Chuck Israels)
Harlem (Arr. Luther Henderson & Maurice Peress)
Sophisticated Lady (Arr. Morton Gould)
Night Creature for Jazz Band and Orchestra (Arr. Luther Henderson, Ed. Gunther Schuller)
New World A Comin’ (Arr. Maurice Peress)
Three Black Kings (Completed by Mercer Ellington, Arr. Luther Henderson)
Duke Ellington’s musical style employs a unique blend of classical and jazz compositional techniques that also combine improvisation with written works, making him one of the most influential jazz composers of all time. Although he considered his compositions “beyond category” and he never defined himself as a jazz composer, his instrumental groupings, improvisational skills, and jazz arranging brought the world a notable American sound that can be heard in works like Sophisticated Lady and Harlem. His symphonic suite Three Black Kings demonstrates his focus on musical form and jazz composition. Ellington said his aim in writing Night Creature—which premiered at Carnegie Hall in 1955—was “to try to make the symphony swing.”

Tickets, priced at $25–$65, are available at carnegiehall.org, by calling CarnegieCharge at 212.247.7800 or visiting the box office at 57th St & 7th Ave. Ticket holders will need to comply with the venue’s health and safety requirements, which can be found here

7) BATED BREATH

THEATRE COMPANY

ANNOUNCES

CHASING ANDY WARHOL

imMERSIVE WALKING TOUR PRODUCTION

INTO THE WORLD OF ICONIC ARTIST ANDY WARHOL

IN EAST VILLAGE

PREVIEWS TO BEGIN ON MARCH 25; OPENING APRIL 7

Bated Breath Theatre Company is thrilled to announce its newest immersive and theatrical walking tour production, Chasing Andy Warhol, will begin previews commencing on March 25, 2022, with an official opening set for April 7, 2022.

Chasing Andy Warhol follows on the heels of Bated Breath Theatre Company’s award-winning production Voyeur: The Windows of Toulouse-Lautrec, the longest-running pandemic friendly show in New York City. Voyeur turned the West Village into Paris in 1899 and now, in partnership with Fever/SECRET NYC, the Greenwich Village Business Alliance, the NoHo Business Improvement District, TMPL Clubs at Astor Place, and Von Bar, Bated Breath will use the East Village as a set that will transport audiences into the world of the most influential artist of the 20th century.

The theatrical walking tour production will employ Bated Breath’s unique multimedia approach as scenes inspired from Warhol’s enigmatic life unfold on the streets, behind windows of area businesses, and inside secret locations along the route.  Despite Warhol’s celebrity and fame, he was also an obscure, mystifying persona who preferred to remain elusive. The show will use a distinct blend of immersive theatre, dance, film, art, and puppetry to peek into the life of the iconic artist. Chasing Andy Warhol goes beyond the hype and into the deepest feelings of a profoundly complex person - whose legacy continues to bombard our senses at every turn.

Tickets for Chasing Andy Warhol are $80.00 and can be purchased on www.chasingandywarhol.com. There is a drink upgrade ticket available for $87.00. Show times are Thursdays at 5:00 p.m., 5:45 p.m., 6:30 p.m., 7:15 p.m., 8:00 p.m.; 8:45 p.m., Fridays at 5:00 p.m., 5:45 p.m., 6:30 p.m., 7:15 p.m., 8:00 p.m., 8:45 p.m., and Sundays at 1:00 p.m., 1:45 p.m., 2:30 p.m., 3:15 p.m., 4:00 p.m., 4:45 p.m., 5:30 p.m., 6:15 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.  There are 16 guests per performance time.

7PM RE|Claim with short dance works-in-progress by Molly Lieber and Eleanor Smith, Aretha Aoki, Katherine De La Cruz, Mai Lê Grooves & a WTF is gender panel with visual artist Sasa Yung at The Kraine Theater
Molly Lieber and Eleanor Smith’s (she/her) feminist works use abstract dance to break down patriarchal systems of female degradation through physical paradigms. As objects of this work, the artists position themselves as recognizable images of female objectification, only to deconstruct and reconstitute these forms through embodied movement and connection. Within this arena of deeply understood femininity and friendship, images dissolve as feelings communicate viscerally. Aretha Aoki’s “IzumonookunI” is sci-fi-punk-futuristic mixed media dance piece by Aretha Aoki and Ryan MacDonald. Incorporating dance, built objects, and original sound and video design, the piece braids together the (her)story of Kabuki theater, the women who have been erased in Aretha Aoki’s family due to the patriline, and the structure of “strange loops”— cyclic forms that evade their hierarchical and linear-seeming progressions. In “Le pot”, Mai Lê journeys through waves of personal challenge relating to self, others, dreams, and growth. Katherine De La Cruz’s “Casas de Carton”uses this famous Salvadorean protest song in a reflection of Uruguayan author Eduardo Galeano’s question "What use does the idea of Utopia have?" as a call to attention about inequality and the exploitation of working class people. The evening will close with a “WTF is gender” panel convened by trans visual artist and Parsons School of Design student Sasa Yung (he/they). Curated by maura nguyễn donohue.

Followed by a Q&A With The Cast

FOOD FOR THOUGHT PRODUCTIONS, now in its 22nd year, continues celebrating the oft-neglected one-act play and theatre at its best with Award-winning actors, writers and directors, with a tremendously fun production set for its 2022 Season Opener on March 28th.

Taking place in the living room of Alice and Bill Reynolds, this one act revolves around a couple that seems to have it all—plenty of books, plenty of paintings and plenty of disagreements! They have agreed to two things:  to separate and above all that they both remain amicable and civilized.  And to do so they have decided to put tags on everything they own which simply say Alice’s or Bill’s.  It is not always clear what and who belongs to whom.  Until the end!!

Oscar, Tony, and Emmy winner Peter Stone’s Commercial Break -- Another couple, Catherine and Harry Crocker, married for 15 years.  She is the Commissioner of Consumer Affairs, he is an advertising executive or, as his wife describes him, “a professional liar”!   She suspects he is having an affair and has been lying to her about—mostly everything!  To save their marriage she asks him to create a commercial on the spot.  The product he is selling—himself. If she is not sold she will start looking at the competition!

(What do Audrey Hepburn and Cary Grant have to do with Commercial Break? Lots!! Peter Stone wrote a monologue for Audrey Hepburn which she recorded for Stone's classic film, "Charade." The monologue was edited out. Then he revised the monologue for Cary Grant who also starred in "Father Goose", for which Stone won the Oscar. Grant recorded it and once again it was edited out! Stone then developed the monologue into the one-act play, Commercial Break!)

Tallulah Finds Her Kitchen by Neil Simon, Danny Simon & Joseph Stein --This is a monologue written about a woman’s discovery and a new relationship in her life.  Written for Tallulah Bankhead, the relationship is one with her kitchen!  The discovery–how to use it!

The March 28th, 2:00pm performance, directed by Antony Marsellis, will be available live via Streaming as well as a limited in-theatre ‘audience’ who will be part of a documentary being filmed on FFTP. The FFT series is presented at Theatre 80 St. Marks. Tickets for the ‘live’ performance are free to first-come patrons, who have agreed to be part of the documentary on FFTP. 15) Works & Process at the Guggenheim Presents
The World Premiere of John Jarboe’s Rose: You Are Who You Eat
co-presented by La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club
March 26, 2022

Works & Process, the performing arts series at the Guggenheim, is proud to present the world premiere of John Jarboe’s Rose: You Are Who You Eat on March 26, 2022 at 7:30 pm. Taking place in the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Peter B. Lewis Theater at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, all programs invite audiences to embrace artistic process and uniquely blend performance highlights with insightful artists discussions.

See video preview: WPA Virtual Commissions: "Rose: a true story and song" by John Jarboe - YouTube

Rose: You Are Who You Eat is a true story set to music. Artist John Jarboe writes:

In 2018 my aunt revealed I had a twin in the womb.
She said, “You know you had a twin in the womb?”
I didn’t know.
She said, “You ate her. That’s why you are the way you are.”
This was a lot to swallow.
My aunt’s pronouncement that my gender stemmed from an act of fetal cannibalism is the seed for this piece: a celebration and “digestion” of this newfound twin, who I later learned would have been named “Rose.”

Following the Works & Process premiere on March 26, the concert experience of Rose can be seen at CulturalDC’s Source Theatre on April 1-2. Over the next 18 months, CulturalDC will work with Jarboe to realize the evolution of Rose into an immersive, multidisciplinary installation.

22) Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company
presents
Awakening
March 24-27, 2022
at the New York Live Arts Theater

Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company presents the Awakening on March 24, 25, 26, 2022 at 7:30 pm and March 27, 2022 at 3pm at the New York Live Arts Theater. Tickets are $20, with $15 tickets for students and seniors, and $50 VIP tickets, and can be purchased at newyorklivearts.org/event/awakening/

Awakening is the final production of the late choreographer Nai-Ni Chen before her untimely passing in December 2021. This expansive production is the artistic embodiment of Nai-Ni Chen’s observation of and reaction to all of the events that happened around her: the division of society, the quest for social equity, the dual beauty and trauma of isolation, and her hope for unity. Nai-Ni Chen’s signature choreographic style crosses many boundaries as she brings unique elements of Chinese culture into the contemporary dance world. The Company is including her seminal work Incense, as a prayer to her spirit and to remember her choreographic grace and power.

Awakening includes:

One of the last and final work of Nai-Ni Chen, completed by PeiJu Chien-Pott with commissioned music by Jason Kao Hwang, Unity (Premiere) was inspired by the story that a single stick is easy to break but a bunch is not easily breakable. In this dance, the choreographer integrated numerous elements of Chinese Martial Art into the dance, and all the company dancers received regular training from Martial Arts champion Sifu Yuan Zhang. The story speaks to the power of gathering and Nai-Ni Chen’s hope for community unity during our struggle for equity and anti-hate.

Incense (2003), a dance originally inspired by the sculpture titled Nine Muses by Carlos Dorian installed at Grounds for Sculpture in Hamilton, New Jersey. The choreographer draws ideas from the offering of incense in the long corridors of an ancient temple in her childhood. The raising white clouds of the incense is said to bring the believer’s prayer from their hearts to god’s ears. The music, by Joan La Barbara, reminds her of the mystical elements of nature and the more abstract, formal elements that gives structure to our faith and thus our lives.

Truthbound (2018) was Nai-Ni Chen’s response to media and Democracy. At this time, everyone is overburdened with news and ideas from every direction, the dance represents Nai-Ni’s reaction to the crisis of faith and trust at this time. Truthbound received critical acclaim in Germany. “In their body and visual language, sensitively creative fantasy, and poetry. Tradition and experiment are combined with dance-like precision and dynamics.” ... writes Volksfreund Critic Eva-Maria Reuther

Shadow force (2020) was created during the pandemic mostly on zoom with limited rehearsal with dancers in person. The dance is the choreographer’s response to the effect of the isolation, personal struggle, anti-Asian hate, and the social unrest that was happening around her. Despite the darkness, she said that the ending was her vision of hope through struggle, and that hope is something we all share.

23) THE OPC

EPISODE 3: “WHAT’S A HEAVEN FOR?”

EPISODE 2: “THE SHOWRUNNER”

CREATED & WRITTEN BY RICHARD CURTIS
DIRECTED BY MEGAN SIMARD
PRODUCTION, DESIGN & MUSIC BY STEVE MECCA

AVAILABLE ON ALL STREAMING PLATFORMS

The OPC, an original scripted podcast series focusing on ageism, created and written by Richard Curtis, has released its third and fourth episodes, each under 15 minutes, now available on all streaming platforms.

Previously on The OPC, Bernard Bentlee’s family has been investigating a project called The OPC, that the 83 year-old patriarch has been developing in secret. His ex-son-in-law, Leonard, finds out, from a woman of dubious reputation, that the old man has been asking a lot of questions about the sex life of senior citizens. Bernard Bentlee’s daughter Annette gets a clue from a lawyer that this is ‘bigger than anything you can imagine,’ while his granddaughter Ashley learns from a talent agent that he has been seeing a lot of models.

Episode Three, “What’s a Heaven For?”, begins with Bernard Bentlee entertaining the models in his study, as his family gathers outside his door, determined to confront him.

In Episode Four, “The Showrunner”, Ashley goes to spy on her grandfather’s secret activities.

A modern twist on the classic radio play format, The OPC is equal parts comedy and heart. Easy to binge and hard to forget, this is one podcast that will leave you wanting more. (And more is on the way: a second season is being scripted.)

Oh behind a little forest,

A little white snow lies.

Going to his young girl,

Little young Cossack.

Little young Cossack,

Going to his young girl.

And bad people

Destroyed the glory.

And I see this disgrace;

Oh I am not afraid.

I am with my young love

And I cannot stop talking.

Oh behind a little forest,

The little sun is going down.

The Cossack goes to his young girl

Every evening.

The Selfish Giant/El Gigante Egoísta

Saturday, April 9th, 1 PM (English) and 3:30 PM (Spanish)

Recommended for ages 4 and up.

The Selfish Giant is a classic tale about a giant who builds a wall around his garden to keep out the town’s children but in doing so plunges his garden into an endless winter. The show’s creators instill a sense of urgency in the story by placing the storytellers themselves at a border wall. Traveling, depression-era hucksters, transform their wares to tell a much-needed story to the audience they find waiting to cross. The Selfish Giant is funny, touching and fun. It’s a celebration of the power of stories to divide us or bring us closer together.

30) Acclaimed Prison Drama Returns
A WHITE MAN’S GUIDE TO RIKERS ISLAND
Continues through April 2

After a critically acclaimed and often-extended run in 2019, A WHITE MAN’S GUIDE TO RIKERS ISLAND will return this spring for an encore run. Based on a true story, it is written by Richard Roy (Richard III with Denzel Washington) and Eric C. Webb, directed by Thomas G. Waites (Awake and Sing! starring Frances McDormand, King Richard III starring Al Pacino), and stars Richard Roy and Dillon John Collins. Performances run through April 2 March 10 at Gene Frankel Theatre.

When a drunk driving incident leads to an involuntary manslaughter charge, a privileged white actor finds himself serving time at Rikers Island, where the population is over 95% people of color. For the first time in his life, Rich is now a minority and his skin color makes him a target. Caught between drug lords, gang members, and his wise trans cellmate, this clueless white man must learn how to survive the violence, horniness, and mind-numbing nothingness that is prison. All while trying to find forgiveness for his crime. Oh, and at the insistence of his Corrections Officer, write A WHITE MAN’S GUIDE TO RIKERS ISLAND for submission to the National Penitentiary Press Competition. Seriously. An eye-opening look inside our broken penal system and a cautionary tale for anyone of any race.

A WHITE MAN’S GUIDE TO RIKERS ISLAND runs March 10 – April 2, Thursday – Saturday at 8pm and Sunday at 2pm. Gene Frankel Theatre is located at 24 Bond Street, between Bowery and Lafayette -- accessible from B,D,F,M trains at Broadway/Lafayette or the #6 at Bleecker. Tickets are $35, available at www.rikersplay.com

31) New Musical

A Walk on the Moon

at George Street Playhouse

Announces Fellowship Program With

The Workshop

for BIPOC Theatre Professionals

Three Fellows Will Support The New Musical

In Sound, Playwriting and Directing/Choreography

The new musical A Walk on the Moon at George Street Playhouse, running April 26th – May 21st, is proud to partner with The Workshop on a unique fellowship program for early career BIPOC-identifying theatre professionals. Fellows include Prince Bawuah (Sound), a New Jersey based African American sound designer/technician and a soon-to-be graduate of Montclair State University; Clare Fuyuko Bierman (Playwriting), a Japanese-Jewish playwright who recently received her MFA from New York University; and Gabriella Pérez (Directing/Choreography), a New York City based Latinx Jewish actor and choreographer whose work has been seen at Alabama Shakespeare Festival and Portland Center Stage, among others.

The Workshop is North America’s first fellowship centering the work of JOCISM (Jews of Color, Jewish-Indigenous, Sephardi & Mizrahi) artists & culture-makers. Conceived and founded by theatre-artist and rabbinical student, Kendell Pinkney, The Workshop launched with multiple core collaborations (The Jewish Theological Seminary, Reboot, JCC Harlem, Usdan Summer Camp for the Arts) and is hosted by The Hendel Center for Ethics and Justice at JTS.

A Walk on the Moon is based on the award-winning film by Pamela Gray. Every year, Pearl Kantrowitz packs up her family for another summer in the Catskills with the same friends, same mah-jongg games, and the same Blouse Man. But this summer is different. A free-spirited salesman sweeps through the Jewish bungalow colony and awakens Pearl to a version of herself she’d forgotten. While contending with a rebellious teenage daughter, a mother-in-law who knows too much, and a loving husband who is content with the status quo, Pearl must decide if she’s willing to break free from her predictable world to embrace the unknown. One thing is certain: nothing will ever be the same.

Tickets begin at $25, and groups of 10 or more save up to 20% on seats. To book now or learn more, visit GeorgeStreetPlayhouse.org, or call 732-246-7717.

33) Works & Process Commissions and Presents
Ladies of Hip-Hop: Black Dancing Bodies
with Ursula RuckerBethany Arts Community,
Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts,
and Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum
Through March 27, 2022

To support and facilitate the much-needed exchange of inspiration and the transference of knowledge between generations of Ladies of Hip Hop, in January 2021 within the safety of a Works & Process bubble residency at Bethany Arts Community, a group of eleven major practitioners gathered, including dance elders (ages 50–60), innovators (ages 33–49), and young celebrants (ages 20–32). Led by Executive Director Michele Byrd-McPhee, this intersectional project incubated and captured the knowledge, beauty, and power of Black female street dancers and resulted in a, rare for the time, indoor video performance, commissioned by Works & Process at the Guggenheim, and co-produced by Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts and New York Public Library for the Performing Arts.

Emerging from the pandemic, and as the Ladies of Hip-Hop look beyond the traditional lens of exposure for Black bodies in dance, which has overwhelmingly focused on Eurocentric dance aesthetics including modern, contemporary, and ballet, Works & Process and Bethany Arts Community continue to commission the project. As Ladies of Hip-Hop reconvene they will create a concert dance piece which will be featured in a series of events that will preserve and celebrate the beauty, strength, and lived experiences of Black women in street dance.

The York Theatre Company (James Morgan, Producing Artistic Director; Evans Haile, Executive Director), dedicated to the development of new musicals and rediscovery of musical gems from the past, presents the world premiere of Penelope, or How the Odyssey Was Really Written, a new musical comedy with book & lyrics by Peter Kellogg (York’s Desperate Measures), and music by Stephen Weiner (The Rivals), directed and choreographed by Emily Maltby (York’s Lolita, My Love), with music direction and orchestrations by David Hancock Turner (York’s Cheek to Cheek, Desperate Measures) and vocal arrangements by David Hancock TurnerSteve Delehanty, and Stephen Weiner.

Penelope is married to Odysseus, the King of Ithaca, a Greek island in the Ionian Sea. She is currently waiting for him to return from the Trojan War. She’s been waiting a long time: twenty years; ten years since the war ended. A bevy of suitors have gathered, each wanting to marry her and take over the kingdom. To stall them, Penelope writes letters to herself and pretends they’re from Odysseus saying he’s on his way. Little does she know that her letters gathered together are creating the story of The Odyssey. (Since no one knows who really wrote The Odyssey, this theory is as good as any other.) Meanwhile the suitors, having little else to do but eat and drink, form an a cappella group—the acoustics in The Great Hall are terrific.

Penelope will play the following performance schedule: Tuesdays, Wednesdays, & Thursdays at 7:00 p.m., Fridays at 7:30 p.m., Saturdays at 2:30 p.m. & 7:30 p.m., and Sundays at 2:30 p.m,
