Mom's view: Fifty Million Frenchman is the first show in the York Theatre's Musicals In Mufti series celebrating Cole Porter. This particular show is memorable for being Porter's first big hit although the show has been scaled down very much from the original approximately 3 hour length and 100 or so person cast. York Theatre's version of the show has a cast of 11 and comes in at a little under 2 hours. The show is pretty much a standard boy meets girl story. The plot is somewhat filmsy and doesn't seem to make much sense. However, there is a lot of humor in the story, and the characters are mostly likeable. The highlight of the show is, of course, all of Cole Porter' wonderful cleverly worded songs. Many of them are reminscent of his later more familiar songs from some of his greatest hits. The great music more than anything else make this show worth seeing. If you are interested in seeing the show, just be aware that only three performances remain: today at 2:30 PM and 8:00 PM and tomorrow at 2:30 PM.
