I started this blog with one daughter, kept it up with the other, to spend time together doing something we enjoyed.
However, things change and people evolve. My daughters are older, busier, and not as interested in writing.
From now on this blog will be mostly mom with occasional contributions from my daughters and maybe even my husband.
Nothing else will change. We'll still focus on sharing fun places to go, fun things to do, and more, and we would  still love to hear your views too

Where-To-Go Wednesday - Marlpit Hall

What: Marlpit Hall

Where: 137 Kings Highway
             Middletown, NJ

Who: Recommended for Ages 8 and Up

Marlpit Hall is one of five historic homes owned and run by the Monmouth County Historical Association. Parts of the home date back to the late 1600s, making it one of the oldest structures in the state, although it was not always situated in its current location. It is listed on the Register of Historic Places as well as the New Jersey Women's Heritage Trail. It is the only one of the County's historic homes to belong to a loyalist family during the Revolutionary War period.

The house is filled with 18th-century furnishings. Although they were not original to the location, many of them did belong to families in the area. Objects and relics found during the area's excavation and more are also on display.

Aside from information about the history of the home and the families who owned it, as well as a brief history of the area at the time, Malrpit Hall also provides a study of slavery in the Monmouth County area. An exhibit throughout the home traces the history of the kitchen family, as the slaves were known due to the domestic and childcare duties that were their responsibility. The exhibit provides a stark reminder that the shame of slavery was not always something that was only associated with the South.

And that's our view. Marlpit Hall is open Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM.  There is no fee to visit. For more information, visit www.monmouthhistory.org/historic-houses or revolutionarynj.org/sites/marlpit-hall

Tune in tomorrow for Theater Thursday.
