How My Grandparents Fell in Love is a delightful new musical. Charlie is a young man who has emigrated to America but returns to Poland to find a wife, where he meets Chava and thinks his search has ended, but she is not quite so convinced. The show is based on the story of the playwright's grandparents.
The show stars Harris Milgrim as Charley and Becca Suskauer as Chava. Milgrim is quite charming, and Suskauer is full of zest in the role of the fiery and determined Chava, a woman ahead of her time. The two share a sweet chemistry, and their singing and dancing duets are highlights of the show.
Set against the backdrop of the lead-up to World War II, the show is not all sweetness and light, however. Accordingly, the songs range from breezy and fun, including "Oh Hoboken" and "A New Pair of Shoes," to the heartbreaking "Why Do They Hate Us?" which is as sadly relevant now as it was then. However, despite the darkness looming in the background, the show is overall quite lovely and pleasant and definitely worth seeing.
