What:
Sinister Secrets of the Seaport Walking Tour
Where: Meet at Ryan Maguire's Bar and Restaurant
28 Cliff St.
New York, NY
Who: Recommended for 13 and Up
If you are interested in learning about the darker side of the South Street Seaport, you are definitely going to want to take a Sinister Secrets of the Seaport Walking Tour. If you are slightly squeamish, you needn't worry. The tales you will be told are dark but not extremely gory so you won't have to worry about your head being filled with horrifying images that you won't be able to get rid of. For this reason, the tour is suitable for children but not for young children (under 13).
On this extremely engrossing tour, you will be told stories about a rat fighting ring, the mafia in the Fulton Fish Market, assorted murders, and more. You will learn fascinating facts as well like why the Brooklyn Bridge was built where it was and what led to the passage of the first anti-animal cruelty laws. It is definitely one of those tours where you will have to use your imagination a lot as there will be more telling than showing as most of the stories shared took place a long time ago and things have changed a lot. However, your guide will have plenty of pictures to share to supplement the stories you are being told (and don't worry there aren't any bloody, gross, or disgusting pictures or anything that is going to keep anybody up at night). Whether you are a fan of true crime stories or you are just interested in taking a unique look at the history of the hidden underbelly of the South Street Seaport, you will definitely enjoy this compelling tour.
