I'm Into Something Good: My Life Managing 10cc, Hermans Hermits, and Many More
Today we talking about A Wish for Christmas by Courtney Cole. Married couple, Noel and Jonah are drifting apart when a wish on a snow globe turns them into virtual strangers. When they return to their mutual hometown they gradually find themselves drawn to each other but the contentious mayoral race between their fathers just may keep them apart for good.
While the romance is sweet in this book, there aren't really any surprises. You can see the happy ending right from the beginning. Even the way the dispute between their two fathers is resolved is totally foreseeable.
Also, the main premise of the book is not believable. People don't grow up in a vacuum their lives are intertwined with others. Therefore, it seems unrealistic that the two could grow up in the same town and suddenly not remember each other and yet everyone else remembers them both. It also doesn't seem likely that their lives and background stories could be completely changed and yet no one else's is.
However, that being said, the two are cute together. Plus, if you are an animal lover, there are a couple of great animal storylines in this book. One involves the relationship between Noel (and Jonah) and a dog named Elliot. The other involves the adorable friendship between Elliot and a kitten named Moxie. These cute relationships definitely make this a book worth reading and also kind of make you wish it was a movie instead of a book so you could actually see the big dog and little kitten besties together.
Today we are recommending I'm Into Something Good: My Life Managing 10cc, Hermans Hermits, and Many More by Harvey Lisberg with Charlie Thomas. This is a fascinating look at the world of rock and roll through the eyes of a man who spent his career managing assorted bands. Through this book, you get an intimate look at how such bands as Herman Hermits and 10cc were formed, how some of their greatest hits came to be, what ultimately led to their demise, and so much more. You even get to learn a little about the world of professional, Snooker (a billiards game popular in places like England, Australia, and Canada) through the chapter on Lisberg's brief foray into sports management. If you are interested in knowing more about the inner workings of the rock world (and/or finding out a little about the world of Snooker), you will definitely want to read this engaging book.
Movies: America's Family
Today we are recommending America's Family. This film is the gut-wrenching story of a family torn apart when the mother is detained, one of the sons is deported, and the father has to take refuge in a Temple due to immigration issues. The other son and daughter of the family are left struggling to reunite them all. Although the film is not based on the story of an actual family, it is a story that is all too common and all too real for too many families today.
This film is available for screening in the following cities on the following dates:
Through November 23 at Village East by Angelika in New York City
Through November 24 at Gardena Cinema in Los Angeles
November 21 at The Loft Cinema in Tucson
It will also be available digitally on December 5.
Misc.: Cards & Crafts Quilled Bookmarks
Today we are recommending Cards and Crafts Quilled Bookmarks. These extremely durable 2x6 inch book marks are made from heavy stock paper. Each one contains a pretty floral design at the top. They come in sets of three: either green, purple, and blue or red, orange, and yellow. They can be found on Treppie, a maker's marketplace.
