I started this blog with one daughter, kept it up with the other, to spend time together doing something we enjoyed.
However, things change and people evolve. My daughters are older, busier, and not as interested in writing.
From now on this blog will be mostly mom with occasional contributions from my daughters and maybe even my husband.
Nothing else will change. We'll still focus on sharing fun places to go, fun things to do, and more, and we would  still love to hear your views too

1) Backlash to Brazilian Happiness

In Backlash to Brazilian Happiness, Debora Balardini  (Inside the Wild Heart, Group.Br) delivers a poignant solo performance, offering a unique perspective as a Brazilian-American multiracial woman navigating life in the United States. Drawing subtle inspiration from the mythological character Medea, her portrayal illuminates the inner struggles faced by a survivor of sexual abuse and societal judgments, who grapples with the pervasive feeling of being deemed 'not enough.' Through a captivating blend of movement, voice, and text, Balardini's performance serves as a powerful ode to the resilience of women, echoing the timeless themes of transformation and empowerment found in the myth of Medea, as they continually shape, deconstruct, and rebuild their identities.

In the parts of the real-life autistic young adults featured in the HBO documentary, are a cast of seven autistic actors, all reprising the roles they played at Syracuse Stages, and making their Broadway debuts: Desmond Luis Edwards (he/they) as Remy, Amelia Fei [Yi-Hsuan Fei] (she/her) as Caroline, Madison Kopec (they/she) as Marideth, Liam Pearce (he/him) as Drew, Imani Russell (they/them) as Mel, Conor Tague (he/him) as Tommy, and Ashley Wool (she/her) as Jessica.

How to Dance in Ohio is a heartfelt new musical about the desire to connect and the courage it takes to put yourself out into the world. At a group counseling center in Columbus, Ohio, seven autistic young adults prepare for a spring formal dance—a challenge that breaks open their routines as they experience love, stress, excitement, and independence. How to Dance in Ohio is a story about people on the cusp of the next phase of their lives, facing down hopes and fears, ready to take a momentous first step…and dance.

4) Monsieur Chopin

Monsieur Chopin features the romantic story and music of the Polish pianist-composer Fryderyk Chopin, set in Chopin’s Parisian salon where he will teach a piano lesson that actually took place in March 1848, just days after the February 1848 revolution. As the piano lesson unfolds, Chopin reveals secrets about the art of the piano and composition, as well as secrets about himself. Hershey Felder delves deep into the music and psyche of the man, considered by his contemporaries, and now by history, as the true “Poet of the Piano.”

Jordan Fisher joins the cast as Orpheus 11/20

Following two intertwining love stories — that of young dreamers Orpheus and Eurydice, and that of King Hades and his wife Persephone — Hadestown invites audiences on a hell-raising journey to the underworld and back. Mitchell’s beguiling melodies and Chavkin’s poetic imagination pit industry against nature, doubt against faith, and fear against love. Performed by a vibrant ensemble of actors, dancers, and singers, Hadestown delivers a deeply resonant and defiantly hopeful theatrical experience.

C) Extended Run

8) Covenant

When a struggling guitarist returns to his small Georgia town a blues star, rumors begin swirling that he may have made a deal with the devil to attain his musical genius. Before long, however, it becomes clear he's not the only one with a secret. A mythic and suspenseful new play that delivers one devilish twist after another, York Walker's Covenant explores the power of belief and the thin line between rumor and truth.

9) Translations

The play takes place in late August 1833 at a hedge-school in the townland of Baile Beag - an Irish speaking community in County Donegal. Strangers have arrived in town in the form of a detachment of Royal Engineers engaged on behalf of the British Army and Government to “standardize” the Gaelic name places by translating them into English. There is friction in the community and there is also love and romance between the native and the strangers. Translations illuminates the significance of language at scales both large and small and questions the meaning of cultural expression and identity in an Ireland under British rule.

11) AMERICAN CLASSICAL ORCHESTRA OPENS 2023-24 SEASON WITH

PREMIER COUP D’ARCHET AT LINCOLN CENTER’S ALICE TULLY HALL

NOVEMBER 16, 2023

Violinist Augusta McKay Lodge is Guest Soloist

American Classical Orchestra Founder and Artistic Director Thomas Crawford leads the opening concert of the Orchestra’s 39th season at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall on Thursday, November 16. The first of four 2023-24 orchestral performances, the concert offers such epic masterpieces as Mozart’s “Paris” and Beethoven’s “Pastoral” symphonies, along with Beethoven’s Romance in G Major for Violin and Orchestra. The Romance features award-winning, historically informed violinist and concertmaster Augusta McKay Lodge. The title of the program, premier coup d'archet (first stroke of the bow), refers to a device whereby all string instruments play together at the start of a symphony—a practice popular at the time.

Season Opening: Premier coup d'archet

Thursday, November 16, 2023, 7:30 pm at Alice Tully Hall

American Classical Orchestra

Thomas Crawford, conductor

Augusta McKay Lodge, violin

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: Symphony No. 31 in D Major, K. 297/300a “Paris”

Ludwig van Beethoven: Symphony No. 6 in F Major, Op. 68 “Pastoral”

Ludwig van Beethoven: Romance for Violin and Orchestra No. 1 in G Major, Op. 40

The evening opens with Mozart’s Symphony No. 31, which makes ample use of the premier coup d’archet method. It was written while the 22-year-old composer was looking for work in Paris and received hearty applause at its 1778 premiere. Beethoven’s Romance in G Major for Violin and Orchestra spotlights Augusta McKay Lodge, a founding member of ensembles Voyage Sonique (New York) and Spielerei Piano Trio (Amsterdam), and a frequent concertmaster with Les Arts Florissants. Augusta will also perform with Les Arts Florissants at Alice Tully Hall as violin soloist for Purcell’s The Fairy Queen on November 2. The program concludes with Beethoven’s Pastoral Symphony, beloved for its portrayals of sounds of nature, including birds, a brook, and a thunderstorm. The ACO presents an authentic look at Beethoven’s vision by using natural hunting horns, leather timpani, and 18th century Austrian woodwind instruments.

Tickets, priced at $75, $55, and $35, are available at www.aconyc.org, by calling at ACO at (212) 362-2727, ext.4, or by visiting lincolncenter.org or calling CenterCharge at 212.721.6500. Subscriptions, priced at $255, $187, and $119, offer a 15% discount over individual ticket prices.

15) THE DRAMATISTS LEGAL DEFENSE FUND ANNOUNCES THE SECOND SEASON OF

BANNED TOGETHER:

AN ANTI-CENSORSHIP THEATRE PODCAST

IN CELEBRATION OF

BANNED THEATRE WEEK

The Dramatists Legal Defense Fund (DLDF) announces the second edition of Banned Together: An Anti-Censorship Theatre Podcast. This year’s edition will feature two episodes, which were both be released on Monday November 6. Episodes will be available to stream until November 30 by visiting www.thedldf.org.

To raise awareness regarding the societal dangers of censorship in the theatre industry, and at large, the Dramatists Guild will be presented the first annual Banned Theatre Week from November 6 through November 12, 2023. Just as Banned Books Week calls out the perils of censoring books, Banned Theatre Week will address the dire consequences that can arise from banning plays and musicals.

Banned Together is an initiative that the DLDF began in 2016. When theatrical works are banned in one community – whether removed from a classroom, a library shelf, or a stage- it is a constitutional infringement upon the opportunities, livelihoods, and rights of dramatists, including playwrights, composers, lyricists, and librettists everywhere. According to the Educational Theatre Association’s 2023 annual play survey, 85% of the 2,300 teachers surveyed were concerned about censorship, with 67% of those teachers sharing that these concerns would influence their selections for future productions. Community concerns over language, lyrics and content are on the rise, matching a wave of book bans and restrictive legislation that affects what can be taught in public schools across the country about LGBTQ rights, racial justice, and other social issues.

The cornerstone of Banned Theatre Week, the Dramatists Legal Defense Fund presents season 2 of Banned Together: An Anti-Censorship Theatre Podcast, which features excerpts from recently banned, cancelled, or protested plays and musicals including Indecent, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, Parade, and more.

The plays featured on the podcast will include The Laramie Project by Moises Kaufman and the Tectonic Theater Company, Anna in the Tropics by Nilo Cruz, Angels in America by Tony Kushner, Indecent by Paula Vogel, and Trouble in Mind by Alice Childress. The podcast also includes performances of songs from musicals Fun Home by Jeanine Tesori and Lisa Kron (“Ring of Keys”), Parade “Rumblin’ and a Rollin’” by Jason Robert Brown and Alfred Uhry, Spelling Bee (“Woe is Me”) by Rachel Sheinkin and William Finn, Hairspray (“Timeless to Me”) by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman and Rent (“Seasons of Love”) by Jonathan Larson.

Wondering how you can fight back against censorship in your community? Visit www.thedldf.org to report a cancelled production, to download helpful resources, to donate, or to learn more.

Featuring David Leopold

A Special Hirschfeld Exhibition

And Hirschfeld’s Wine Labels

Monday, November 20th

The Al Hirschfeld Foundation continues its HIRSCHFELD’S MUSIC relationship with City Winery (25 11th Ave, NYC) on November 20 with a special live event featuring David Leopold, an exhibition of Hirschfeld artwork, and a new series of rock and pops star wine featuring labels by Hirschfeld.

On Monday, November 20 at 7:30PM, David Leopold, Creative Director of The Al Hirschfeld Foundation, will be center stage to celebrate “Hirschfeld’s Music” with a live multimedia presentation. Leopold will take attendees on a sensational tour through decades of musical history as seen by the artist. See how Hirschfeld helped Duke Ellington deal with racism on his first national tours, or when he got Satchmo’s trumpet. See what happens when he hangs out with Aerosmith in the recording studio and who he meets at a Benny Goodman rehearsal in 1932. For this first time, Hirschfeld’s nine decades of music is covered in a presentation featuring rarely seen images as well and old favorites. Whether that music was onstage at the Apollo, on a Broadway stage, a recording studio, or an after-hour jam session, Hirschfeld caught the essence of the players and the scene in a line as supple and rhythmic as any one he heard. Hirschfeld’s drawings and prints give viewers, then and now, a real sense of the performance and personality of the music and the musicians. THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 16 @ 7:30PM
AT SYMPHONY SPACE

Prospect Theater Company (Cara Reichel, Producing Artistic Director; Melissa Huber, Managing Director) is pleased to announce the writers selected for the 2023 cohort of its annual Musical Theater Lab, POTLUCK: A Musical Feast. The culminating one-night-only concert performance of new works generated in the 2023 Lab will be presented at NYC’s Peter Norton Symphony Space (2537 Broadway, at 95th Street) on Thursday, November 16th at 7:30pm.

Each year, Prospect's Lab brings together new musical theater writers for an exciting experiment. Writing teams, selected through an open application process, each create an original, short musical in response to a shared theme. The 6-week program culminates in a public presentation of the hot-off-the-presses new works generated through the lab process.

This year, the theme of POTLUCK: A Musical Feast centers around food, with each of the nine selected writing teams bringing one “course” of a meal to the collective table. In a series of playful and profound new works, writers explore how “we are what we eat” – with food impacting every aspect of our daily lives from family history to first dates.

Tickets are $25 and are available at www.ProspectTheater.org or by calling Symphony Space’s box office, 212-864-5400. The anticipated running time is 95 minutes with no intermission.

Bowne & Co. Announces Wayzgoose

Holiday Kick Off

Thursday, November 16, 2023, from 6–9pm

Step into the South Street Seaport Museum’s 19th century-style letterpress printing shop Bowne & Co. to kick off the holiday season at our annual Wayzgoose—a 500-year-old printers’ tradition celebrating the changing of the seasons.

Legend has it that when Johannes Gutenberg and his team completed the first edition of the Bible, he invited them to his countryside residence for a celebratory dinner where he served a roast goose—they went away to eat a goose, giving rise to the term Wayzgoose. Traditionally a “wayzgoose” was a dinner or celebration hosted by a master printer for his staff to mark the beginning of the season of working by candlelight. The term has since evolved to represent yearly celebrations hosted by those working in printing, publication, or adjacent industries, typically held in late Summer or Fall.

Join the Museum community for light refreshments as the printers of Bowne & Co. give you the opportunity to get hands-on with printing equipment from the Seaport Museum’s working collection and print your own holiday-themed works. For those looking to get a head start on holiday shopping, be the first to check out this season’s delightful selection of holiday gifts, cards, and other seasonal paper goods at the Bowne & Co. gift emporium at 211 Water Street.

The charming 19th-century-style letterpress printing shop offers the perfect setting to continue the Wayzgoose tradition. This event provides a special opportunity for printers to share the fruits of their labor with colleagues and friends, to raise a glass in celebration, and to reflect on the year and the joys of the upcoming holiday season.

Registration is encouraged for this free event but walkups will be accommodated as possible. seaportmuseum.org/wayzgoose

27) South Street Seaport Museum Announces

Culper Spy Ring presentation from Historian Bill Bleyer

Saturday, November 18, 2023, 2:30pm

Join South Street Seaport Museum for an afternoon of old-school espionage! In this fascinating free presentation, historian and author Bill Bleyer will illuminate the true tale of the Culper Spy Ring, a covert operation that provided critical support to George Washington's Continental Army during the American Revolution.

In the quest for independence, George Washington recognized the immense value of enemy intelligence circulating through the streets of Lower Manhattan. He enlisted Major Benjamin Tallmadge, a native of Long Island, to spearhead an intelligence network that history remembers as the Culper Spy Ring. Drawing from his recent book, George Washington’s Long Island Spy Ring: A History and Tour Guide, Bleyer will sift through the myths and realities, showcasing the ingenious workings of this indispensable covert network that ultimately played a pivotal role in securing victory for the Patriots.

Over the centuries, numerous legends have emerged regarding the Long Island-based Culper Spy Ring. These include stories about Anna Strong's clothesline, the secret passage of intelligence across the Long Island Sound, and various assumptions about the methods employed by the spies. Join this program to unravel the truth behind these legends and gain a deep understanding of the network's actual operations.

Registration is encouraged for this free event but walkups will be accommodated as possible. A Q&A, book signing, and free wine or sparkling water will follow the presentation. George Washington’s Long Island Spy Ring: A History and Tour Guide will be available for purchase at the event. seaportmuseum.org/culper-spy-ring
