I started this blog with one daughter, kept it up with the other, to spend time together doing something we enjoyed.
However, things change and people evolve. My daughters are older, busier, and not as interested in writing.
From now on this blog will be mostly mom with occasional contributions from my daughters and maybe even my husband.
Nothing else will change. We'll still focus on sharing fun places to go, fun things to do, and more, and we would  still love to hear your views too

Gingold Group's current production of Arms and the Man is a good introduction to his plays for teenagers and casual theatergoers who do not like anything written before a certain time because of the different vernaculars of the particular time period when the show was written. The show breaks the 4th wall by having the characters directly address the audience to set up the play and again several other times during the play. The technique is, thankfully, not overused, however, so it never becomes distracting. Shaw himself had always wanted the play to be presented in this way, but it was never done in his lifetime.

There is, in fact, a lot to like about Shaw and his plays in general. He was very forward-thinking for his time (and perhaps even for any time) with regard to equality for all. The women in his plays are not just meek appendages to men but strong-minded and intelligent with thoughts and opinions of their own which they are not afraid to voice.  His shows have plenty of humor in them but also have important things to say without getting too heavy-handed and preachy.

There is a lot to like about this particular production as well. The actors are well chosen for their parts and do a nice job with them. They really seem to be enjoying themselves on stage. Accordingly, there is an underlying sense of joy throughout the production that permeates the audience as well and makes the show an even more enjoyable experience for all. Thus, even if you don't think you like Shaw, there is a good chance you will enjoy this production.
