CANDIDA: The Romcom That Started It All! This incredibly taut romantic comedy by Bernard Shaw will be reset from London 1895 to Harlem 1929. The Reverend James Morell and his wife Candida live a comfortable life until the young poet, Marchbanks, is taken into their home and challenges everything they’d built their lives upon. It’s a time of global upheaval as six characters come together on one tumultuous day to redefine not only who they are but also how to launch into their futures in a more fully self-aware way. Written as a lighthearted response to Ibsen’s A Doll’s House, this short but pithy play races along in ever-surprising ways. This is also the play that later inspired the Robert Anderson play, Tea and Sympathy.

Almost Famous, the new musical with book and co-lyrics by Academy Award^® winner Cameron Crowe, based on his iconic film, will offer a limited number of $40 rush tickets and a digital lottery for the highly-anticipated Broadway production. Almost Famous is set to begin preview performances at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre (242 W 45th St) in New York City October 3, 2022 with opening night on November 3, 2022.

 

The digital lottery through Telecharge will offer $45 tickets. Entries for the digital lottery start at 12:00 a.m., one day before the performance, and end the same day at 3:00 p.m. Winners are drawn at 9:00 a.m. for matinees and 3:00 p.m. for evening shows. Bloomingdale School of Music announces its 2022/23 Faculty Concert Series at the David Greer Concert Hall, 323 West 108th Street, NYC. In the midst of the COVID-19 crisis, the Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company has established a new dance institute through Zoom, The Bridge. The Institute’s aim is to bring together dancers, choreographers and directors around the world to experience the master teachers of color whose practices are embedded in the community and are focused on advancing the art of dance that transform the personal, environmental and metaphysical spaces. Interested dancers can join the class by registering here.

As a virtual dance institute, The Bridge will invite world renowned as well as up and coming dancers and choreographers to come to guest teach the class. Advanced/Intermediate level professional or pre-professional dancers who are looking to explore beyond their own boundaries and looking for new dance experiences are encouraged to participate. The core program is based on Nai-Ni Chen’s Kinetic Spiral, which is a cross-cultural dance vocabulary that integrates the Chinese martial arts philosophy in TaiChi with contemporary dance practices she studied in America. Guest artists will cover a wide range of folk and classical dance styles.

6) New Jersey Theatre Alliance Announces New Career Accelerator Program

Seeking Applicants for a Paid Fellowship Program Offering Learning Experience for Emerging Theatre Professionals of Color 

New Jersey Theatre Alliance (“The Alliance”), is thrilled to announce their new Career Accelerator Program, a 6-month program comprising three part-time, 8-week placements; two with professional theatres and one with New Jersey Theatre Alliance to learn about theatre administration and management in real-world contexts. In addition to learning in the field, fellows will participate in professional development seminars, one-on-one mentoring meetings, and check-ins with the Theatre Alliance Staff. 

Interested applicants must identify as an emerging theatre professional and identify as a person of color. Applicants of color who also identify as Trans or non-binary, disabled, or deaf are highly encouraged to apply.

Applicants may be currently enrolled in college, graduated from college, or finished with high school and not attending college. Adults who identify as emerging theatre professionals, such as those seeking a career change later in life are also eligible for this program. The program is not open to currently enrolled high school students.

Up to three Career Accelerator Fellows will be chosen to participate in the program beginning in January 2023. They will be paid $15/hour, receive a $500 travel stipend, and a $500 stipend to support healthcare, childcare, tuition, debt repayment, or other life needs. Fellows will be matched for placements with New Jersey Theatre Alliance member theatres, all of which are committed to creating a learning experience with specific responsibilities, tasks, projects, and structure.

 Roundabout Theatre Company is proud to announce that the second season of The Refocus Project, its multi-year project to elevate and restore marginalized plays to the American canon, is now available to stream online for free, through Sunday, October 16. This year’s readings, for which Roundabout partnered with Pregones/Puerto Rican Traveling Theater (PRTT), featured plays by Latinx playwrights, including Sarita by María Irene Fornés, directed by Rebecca Aparicio; The Oxcart by René Marqués, directed by Cristina Angeles; and El Corrido De California by Fausto Avendaño, directed by Galia Backal.

 

In addition, direct from The Refocus Project, Season 2, Pregones/PRTT’s production of The Harlem Hellfighters on a Latin Beat begins live performances on Thursday, October 6 at Puerto Rican Traveling Theater (304 W 47th St). More information is available at pregonesprtt.org.

In the ensuing conflict, Don Gerónimo and the citizens of Santa Bárbara are forced to choose between their honor and keeping themselves and their loved ones safe.

Among them are legends James Reese Europe and Rafael Hernández—two musical giants of the 20th century—always eager to relive the adventures that brought them together in the fabled summer of 1917.

The award-winning, hit Off-Broadway show Stranger Sings! The Parody Musical announced that beginning today, the show will launch a $20 digital lottery and a $30 in-person student rush ticket policy.

The digital lottery is available via StrangerSings.com/lottery for all performances, subject to availability. The lottery opens 7 days in advance of performances and winners will be emailed at least four hours prior to performances. The tickets are $20 each (including $1.50 Facility Fee), with purchases via cash sales only and exact change. Ticket pick-up starts 60 minutes before the performance, and concludes 15 minutes prior to performance. Management reserves the right to reallocate lottery seats which are not picked-up and paid for 15 minutes prior to curtain.

Student rush tickets will be sold in person at the Playhouse 46 at St. Luke’s box office, available starting 2 hours before each performance. The tickets are $30 each (including a $1.50 Facility Fee), with cash sales only and exact change. There will be a limit of two tickets per customer, with a valid student ID. Seat locations will be at the discretion of the box office, and are based on availability.

Stranger Sings! The Parody Musical transports Playhouse 46 at St. Luke’s (308 W. 46th Street) into immersive and in-the-round satirized versions of Hawkins, Indiana, and the Upside Down. Performances continue through January 1, 2023.

Co-founder of the George Street Playhouse, and manager for years of the John Houseman and Douglas Fairbanks Theatres, Eric has been a part of the evolution of off-Broadway, through the creation of Theatre Row to running several of his own theater spaces including the current Theatre 555 on West 42nd Street. He shares his experiences with candor and offers insights into the challenges of maintaining off-Broadway as a viable environment for developing theater artists and art.

He'll also share his journey balancing the two sides of his ambitions: playwrighting and producing. Plus his plans for coming back to live performance. With a side trip into the current controversies within our slow-to-change business.

Episode 4: Is the Great White Way Becoming a Little Less White?

In the room: Adam Hyndman, board member and Tara Moses, advisory board member of Broadway for Racial Justice, fighting for greater equity and inclusion by providing immediate resources, assistance, and amplification for BIPOC in the Broadway and theatrical community at-large. Though its nickname referred to the bright lights on its marquees, intentional or not, white privilege and perspective have shaped Broadway and our business from its very beginnings. On June 8, 2020, the pandemic already raging, the BIPOC proclamation "We See You, White American Theater" challenged theater to acknowledge the problem and address it. The current commercial season boasted 7 plays by BIPOC writers, and regional theaters have announced their most diverse seasons to date. Is it enough? And is our current COVID world stifling progress? Bob and his guests wade into the deep waters of controversy and face both the challenge and the necessity of facing the roadblocks in the way of having true equity and inclusion in our business and our world.

The 20^th Anniversary Production of SUZAN-LORI PARKS’ Pulitzer Prize-winning masterpiece, TOPDOG/UNDERDOG, will offer a limited number of tickets via digital lottery and in-person rush starting Tuesday, September 27.

 

The digital lottery for SUZAN-LORI PARKS’ TOPDOG/UNDERDOG can be found at rush.telecharge.com. Entries for the digital lottery start at 12:00am, one day before the performance, and end the same day at 3:00pm. Winners are drawn at 9:00am for matinees and 3:00pm for evening shows. Winners may buy up to two tickets at $40 each.

 

There will also be a limited number of $35 in-person rush tickets available when the box office opens the day of the performance at the Golden Theatre (252 West 45^th Street). The Golden Theatre Box Office is open Monday through Saturday starting at 10am and Sunday at 12pm.

The Slowest Wave

Triskelion Arts, in collaboration with Vangeline Theater/ New York Butoh Institute, presents the World Premiere of The Slowest Wave, a pioneering project combining butoh and neuroscience, on Thursday, October 6 through Saturday, October 8, 2022 at 8pm at Triskelion’s Muriel Schulman Theater, 106 Calyer Street, Brooklyn, NYC (entrance on Banker Street). In collaboration with neuroscientists Sadye Paez, Constantina Theofanopoulou and Jose ‘Pepe’ Contreras-Vidal, and composer Ray Sweeten, Vangeline choreographed a 60-minute ensemble butoh piece, which is uniquely informed by the protocol being established for a scientific pilot study researching the impact of butoh on brain activity. Vangeline and Sweeten are building on a 20-year history of creative collaboration with a soundscape that is informed by techniques of brainwave entrainment (techniques that affect consciousness through sound). The Slowest Wave investigates the relationship between human consciousness and dance through the use of scalp electroencephalography (EEG); and will foster connections and understanding between dancers, artists, scientists, engineers, and audiences from around the world.
