I started this blog with one daughter, kept it up with the other, to spend time together doing something we enjoyed.
However, things change and people evolve. My daughters are older, busier, and not as interested in writing.
From now on this blog will be mostly mom with occasional contributions from my daughters and maybe even my husband.
Nothing else will change. We'll still focus on sharing fun places to go, fun things to do, and more, and we would  still love to hear your views too

A local soothsayer foretells that the future of theatre will involve Singing, Dancing, AND Acting, all at the same time! Gasp! The brothers then decide to write a (wait for it) MUSICAL! The world’s very first musical! Monstress

Featuring original bluegrass and country music, MONSTRESS is a homespun musical that celebrates the rejuvenating power of storytelling. A band of humble folx gather on the back porch to swap some stories: specifically the infamous tales of female monsters from Greek mythology (Medusa, Sphinx, the Sirens, and others). But these folx don’t want to tell the stories in any old way; they want to snatch these monstrous myths away from the patriarchy once and for all—share them in a fresh, empowering light. MONSTRESS proves to be an unmissable theatrical event: a fiercely feminine work full of combative charm and inspiring delight.

Straight Line Crazy

For 40 uninterrupted years, Robert Moses was considered the most powerful man in New York as he envisioned and built public works whose aftereffects determine how New Yorkers experience the city to this day. Hare’s play exposes Moses’s iron will, which exploited weaknesses in the state and city governments as he worked to remake public space. Though never elected to political office, he manipulated those who were through a mix of guile, charm, and intimidation. Motivated at first by a determination to improve the lives of New York City’s working class, he created new parks, new bridges, and 627 miles of expressway to connect the people to the great outdoors. However, Moses often achieved these public works at the expense of disempowered New Yorkers, particularly people of color, living in the way of and near his projects. In the 1950s, groups of citizens began to organize against his schemes and the prioritization of cars over public transportation, campaigning for a very different idea of what a city should be.

By turns a sensory recollection of a childhood spent in a now almost vanished Ireland, a subversive commentary on stardomand – ultimately – a lyrical homage to the people and landscapes that shape our destinies, Walking with Ghosts reflects a remarkable life's journey in all its hilarious and heartbreaking facets. Byrne’s career as an actor, writer and director spanned both stage and screen. He has starred in over 80 films and his work on Broadway has earned him two Tony Award nominations. Through ritual dance and chanted epics, Indigenous tradition-bearers visiting from the Philippines share the healing traditions of four sacred lineages: Maguindanao, Meranao, Tausug, and Tboli. Tickets are $30 for adults, $25 for students and seniors, and the first ten tickets for every performance are $10. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit lamama.org/shows/posaka-2022 or call 646-430-5374.

Combining healing chant, thunderous gong, tantric movement, and foodways transmitted by Indigenous rituals, Posaka awakens all the senses in an encounter guided by authentic tradition-bearers visiting from the Southern Philippines. Joining Kinding Sindaw and its New York-based community of musicians, dancers, and martial artists living in diaspora, Posaka is a performance series that explores themes of displacement, resilience, and collective healing through ancestral arts.

Through ritual dance and chanted epics, Indigenous Master Artists visiting from the Philippines share the living traditions of four unbroken lineages: Maguindanao, Meranao, Tausug, and Tboli. Set to the pulse of sacred drums and a live kulintang ensemble, Posaka navigates the boundaries of ceremony and theater to empower collective healing through ancestral arts. From the Sanskrit for “one who nourishes,” posaka (i.e. heirlooms) retain an ancient Austronesian animism denied in English to so-called "things." Performing cultural translation at many levels, these tradition-bearers as embodied pusaka repair the erasures of hegemony and enduring objectifications of colonialism.

REGISTRATION OPEN NOW

MCC’S 2022-2023

STUDENT MATINEE PROGRAM

FOR MORE INFORMATION VISIT MCCTHEATER.ORG/EDUCATION

MCC Theater (Bernie Telsey, Will Cantler, Co-Artistic Directors; Blake West, Executive Director) announced today the return of their full in-person season for the MCC Youth Company and Student Matinee programs after operating remotely and in a hybrid program for the last two seasons.

MCC will be hosting a two day in-person audition for the 2022-2023 MCC Youth Company programs on Thursday October 20 and Friday October 21, 2022, from 4:30 – 6:30pm. Auditions will take place at neighboring venue 52nd Street Project’s Five Angels Theater (789 10th Ave, New York, NY 10019). Registration is now open and any current New York City high school student is encouraged to apply. Attendance to both days is necessary for consideration as the auditions cover both the Performance Lab and the Playwriting Lab programs.

The MCC Youth Company is a free, after-school program for New York City high school students interested in developing their acting and dramatic writing skills. Within a creative, challenging, and supportive environment, teenagers from five boroughs participate in weekly workshops (Labs) led by professional theater artists. No prior experience is necessary. It is the desire to have one’s voice be heard and to speak one’s authentic truth, that will be the key to connecting with the program.

In Performance Lab, Youth Company actors develop their performance skills through improvisation, movement, and voice activities. Over the course of the year, actors craft original monologues and scenes that are performed by the ensemble and culminate in the annual spring production UNCENSORED directed by Jennifer Shirley and Kevin Carillo.

In Playwriting Lab, members develop original scripts. Under the tutelage of the playwriting director, young writers learn about the process of creating strong characters and composing dialogue, as well as establishing setting and conflict. The yearlong program results in the FreshPlay staged reading program, held every summer.

Students interested in auditioning for the MCC Youth Company must have proof of COVID vaccination, unless they have medical or religious exemption. Further details on the Youth Company COVID policy will be sent to registered students prior to auditions.

For the registration form and more details please click here or email education@mcctheater.org with any inquiries.

MCC Theater will also continue with their updated Student Matinee Program to allow for maximum flexibility for both students and teachers. Middle, High School, and College teachers can book group seats for their students for matinee and evening performances during the run of each show in the 2022-23 season. The special reduced student ticket price of $25 will be available with no additional processing or handling fees. Some blackout dates and restrictions may apply.

A same-day student rush will also be made available for each performance. Students can present their school ID card at the MCC Theater box office to purchase tickets for that evening’s performance for $25.

Educators are encouraged to reach out to the MCC Box Office at boxoffice@mcctheater.org to find the best way to connect their students to live theater performances. They are also invited to reach out to the Education Department at education@mcctheater.org to see how they can preview the show before bringing their classes to the theater. Downloadable Show Guides with activities for the classroom are available during the first week of previews and help set the stage for a well-rounded theater going experience.

ROUGH TRADE, a new glam bam thank you ma’am rock musical, will present a one-night-only concert performance on Sunday, October 23, 2022, at 9:30 pm at Joe’s Pub (425 Lafayette Street). The performance will feature a special appearance by Carole Pope of the iconic Canadian rock group Rough Trade. Seeded by a generous gift from The P. wild project (Ana Mari de Quesada, Producing Artistic Director) is thrilled to announce the web series WAY DOWN, adapted from Grant James Varjas’ play 33 to Nothing, will make its world premiere at NewFest, New York’s LGBTQ+ film festival.

The road to rock bottom is littered with broken dreams for a group of NYC artists pushing 30 in this captivating episodic musical series. These down-and-out East Village denizens pursue their passions, navigate messy relationships, and unsuccessfully communicate their needs to one another, all while trying to make rent in the city’s most ass-kicking neighborhood.

Featuring original music performed by a dynamic ensemble of homegrown talent, the six-episode series introduces us to Alex, a struggling photographer and bass player for a ragtag band, and their girlfriend/bandmate Tyler who is currently in grad school. Meanwhile, Sherrie, Alex’s ex-girlfriend-turned-coworker, is attempting to mount a production of her play in the face of unexpected barriers. Oh, and they all have to deal with each other, which isn’t gonna be easy. It’s about to go down.

The York Theatre Company (James Morgan, Producing Artistic Director; Evans Haile, Executive Director), dedicated to the development of new musicals and rediscovery of musical gems from the past, has announced a limited engagement of Love Online, a cabaret conceived and scripted by Diane Love, featuring songs from Broadway to Country. Love Online has two performances on Wednesday October 19 and November 2. All performances are at 7PM with doors opening at 6PM at the Laurie Beechman Theatre (407 West 42nd Street, on the corner of 9th Avenue).

LOVE ONLINE is a cabaret featuring Diane Love and Jay Nickerson as two aging singles expressing their feelings, hopes, and ultimately love – in song and conversation. Her character has recently ventured into the world of online dating, leading her to a jaded bachelor, just about ready to throw in the towel. Accompanied by Gerry Dieffenbach on the piano, the thirty songs performed run the gamut from Broadway to Country, with many duets juxtaposing unlikely musical combinations. Love Online features the music of Stephen Sondheim, George and Ira Gershwin, Burt Bacharach, Duke Ellington, Patsy Cline, Kander & Ebb, Willie Nelson, and many others. Inspired by friends and acquaintances who found love online, Diane Love has woven songs from the American songbook with country ballads in order to bring her characters to life.

Join The York for the premiere of Love Online on Wednesday October 19th, and the subsequent performance on Wednesday November 2nd. Performers Diane Love and Jay Nickerson, and music director Gerry Dieffenbach, have previously collaborated on another of Love’s original cabarets, Marriage, The Ups and Downs in Song.
