The Visitor is a very timely and heartwrenching story of an illegal immigrant caught up in the system and fighting to stay in the United States where he was brought by his mother when he was a very young child. There has been some controversy over the fact that the story is mainly told through the point of view of a white male character, a professor who is helping Tarek. However, the play is based on a movie and although we have never seen the movie, we assume that the movie was the same way. Also, it is still an important story that is being told here, and the cast is truly diverse.
This story really hits you right in the gut. The performances are heartbreaking. The songs are nice although none of them will necessarily stick in your mind, they are worth listening to again.
This is not by any means a show that is happy and uplifting. However, it is well-written, well-performed, and deals with an important topic. It is definitely worth seeing.
Tune in tomorrow for Tips for Tuesday.
