The 92nd Street Y Harkness Dance Center’s 2021-22 Mainstage Series continues on Thursday, November 18 with Ripple, a new show from Yin Yue Dance Company. Acclaimed choreographer Yin Yue – a 2021 Dance Magazine Harkness Promise Award honoree for her innovative work – created Ripple as an evening of two duets and two solos linked together as a single continuous show. Both solos and one of the two duets are world premieres; the other duet – originally created this summer at a Perry Mansfield residency – will be recreated for this stage presentation. The Mainstage Series marks the return of a full dance season to 92Y’s historic Kaufmann Concert Hall for the first time in decades.

Launched in September 2020 by Cody Renard Richard in partnership with Broadway Advocacy Coalition, this year’s Scholarship includes a new initiative supported by The Theater Leadership Project.
Applications for The Cody Renard Richard Scholarship Program are now open. The program seeks to honor, uplift, and support the next generation of Black, Asian, Latinx, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) theatre-makers working behind the scenes.
The 2nd cycle of The CRR Scholarship Program will grant each recipient a $5,000 scholarship and will offer the cohort five online work sessions connected to leadership, community building, social justice, and mentorship. With support from The Theater Leadership Project, this year’s scholars will also receive an all expenses paid trip to New York City to meet with mentors and experience and learn about Broadway and New York’s theater scene in person.
Submissions are currently being accepted through Sunday, December 5th at 11:59pm EST. Applicants will be selected and informed by late December 2021. All offerings will be held through Zoom and led by the cast, crew, and creative team members from the production of Diana.
Interactive workshops come with a package of all relevant material to prepare students for active participation, if desired. Hosted Conversations will be sold with a complimentary Workbook that middle and high school teachers can adapt for use in class. DreamWorks Theatricals and Music Theatre International, in partnership with NBCUniversal's Global Talent Development & Inclusion (GTDI) team, announced today the opening of the application period for the DreamWorks Theatricals/MTI Emerging Writers Program, now through December 22, 2021. This new partnership will identify diverse teams of bookwriters, composers and lyricists with unique voices and points of view to develop musical adaptations of popular DreamWorks Animation titles intended for the Music Theatre International catalogue. The one-year, paid program will be open to both individual writers and writing teams who can build upon the Studio's commitment to telling stories that appeal to and reflect the vast diversity of its audiences.
Selected applicants will develop a DreamWorks Animation title for the stage, guided by executives from DreamWorks Theatricals and industry ambassadors to craft their musicals from treatment to completed show. The program also provides access to various industry professionals and agents via roundtable discussions, master classes, and individual meetings to advance career development.
Applicants are required to submit a completed application, writing samples, release forms, résumé and personal essay; letters of recommendation are optional.
Applicants cannot have had their work produced on Broadway or the West End at any point and cannot have had their work produced Off-Broadway or at a major regional theatre within the last five years.
Applicants must be 18 years old at the time of application and authorized to work legally in the United States.

Immersive Van Gogh invites audiences to “step inside” the iconic works of Van Gogh, evoking his highly emotional and chaotic inner consciousness through art, light, music, movement and imagination. Immersive Van Gogh was designed by Creator Massimiliano Siccardi, with original, mood-setting music, both original and curated, by Italian multimedia Composer Luca Longobardi, who provided a score that combines experimental electronic music with pure, ethereal and melodic orchestral pieces. With approximately 100 state-of-the-art projectors illuminating over the exhibit space, visitors to Immersive Van Gogh will be encircled from head-to-toe in Van Gogh’s brushstrokes and colors, including animated details from works such as Self Portrait with Felt Hat (1887), The Bedroom in Arles (1888), Irises (1889) and The Starry Night (1889).

In the midst of the COVID-19 crisis, the Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company has established a new dance institute through Zoom, The Bridge. The Institute’s aim is to bring together dancers, choreographers and directors around the world to experience the master teachers of color whose practices are embedded in the community and are focused on advancing the art of dance that transform the personal, environmental and metaphysical spaces. Interested dancers can join the class by registering on Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company’s website: https://www.nainichen.org/thebridge.
As a virtual dance institute, The Bridge will invite world renowned as well as up and coming dancers and choreographer to come to guest teach the class. Advanced/Intermediate level professional or pre-professional dancers who are looking to explore beyond their own boundaries and looking for new dance experiences are encouraged to participate. The core program is based on Nai-Ni Chen’s Kinetic Spiral, which is a cross-cultural dance vocabulary that integrates the Chinese martial arts philosophy in TaiChi with contemporary dance practices she studied in America. Guest artists will cover a wide range of folk and classical dance styles.
Classes will now begin at 10am EST to accommodate the Fall schedules of teachers and participants. Classes may only be held two or three times a week, depending on teacher availability.

Renowned violinist and Bard Conservatory of Music faculty member Gil Shaham joins the Orchestra for the world premiere of Birds of America by multi-award-winning composer, conductor, pianist, and teacher Scott Wheeler. Currently Senior Distinguished Artist-in-Residence at Boston’s Emerson College, Wheeler’s works have been commissioned by the Metropolitan Opera and performed by such artists as Renée Fleming and Kent Nagano. Black American composer Julia Perry’s dramatic Stabat Mater, a setting of the 13th-century medieval poem “Stabat Mater Dolorosa,” describes the crucifixion of Christ from the viewpoint of the Virgin Mother featuring mezzo-soprano Briana Hunter and is dedicated to Perry’s mother. Also on the program is George Frederick Bristow’s rarely-heard Arcadian Symphony. A Brooklyn native and noted choral composer, Bristow frequently wrote music with American themes—his Symphony No. 4 was originally titled The Pioneer.

Evoking mythography and ancestry, Ashwini Ramaswamy’s Let the Crows Come uses the metaphor of crows as messengers for the living and guides for the departed. Let the Crows Come evolved from a simple idea; when a DJ remixes a song, its essence is maintained while its trajectory is changed. To Minneapolis-based dancer/choreographer Ashwini Ramaswamy—a founding company member of the internationally renowned Ragamala Dance Company—this mutation is reminiscent of being a second-generation immigrant—a person that has been culturally remixed to fit into multiple places at once. This work features local movement artists Berit Ahlgren and Alanna Morris-Van Tassel who join Ramaswamy in exploring deconstruction and recontextualized memory.
In a series of three dance solos, Ramaswamy (Bharatanatyam technique) and fellow Minneapolis-based dancers Alanna Morris-Van Tassel (contemporary/African Diasporic technique) and Berit Ahlgren (Gaga technique) deconstruct and recontextualize the South Indian classical dance form Bharatanatyam, recalling a memory that has a shared origin but is remembered differently from person to person. The dancers’ use of imagery and narrative is set to a commissioned original score: the soaring voice of Carnatic singer Roopa Mahadevan and two other classical Indian musicians — percussionist Rohan Krishnamurthy and violinist Arun Ramamurthy — perform an original piece by Prema Ramamurthy. Concurrently, cellist Brent Arnold extrapolates from the classical Carnatic (South Indian) score, utilizing centuries-old compositional structures as the point of departure for sonic explorations — co-created with composer/DJ Jace Clayton (DJ/rupture) — that incorporate pop music and electronic sounds. *********************************************************************

The American Theatre Wing hosted the first post-pandemic live installment of its Emmy® Nominated documentary series, “Working in the Theatre,” with playwright Keenan Scott II and the cast of his acclaimed new Broadway play Thoughts of a Colored Man. The Town Hall (www.TheTownHall.org) and the PREformances Chamber Music Collaborative have teamed up to bring Verdi’s Otello, virtually, to audiences at home as part of The Town Hall’s new Opera at Home series. The virtual series, beginning November 18 at 8pm, presents operas in under an hour, sung by a diverse group of singers who have graced the stages of great opera houses including Metropolitan Opera and New York City Opera.
Now, due to the pandemic, they are singing from their own homes.
At its core, Otello is about a man who falsely accuses his wife of cheating on him, and believes this lie so strongly that he eventually takes her life. Opera at Home’s Otello has captured and brought forth all the important points of the opera so that audience members get a full and rich experience of Verdi’s masterwork, while others are left intrigued and compelled to see the complete version. Although abridged, Opera at Home gives audiences a complete experience and aims to open operatic newcomers to the emotional lure of grand opera.

Historic Philadelphia, Inc., (HPI) the non-profit organization that manages and operates award-winning Franklin Square, announces new additions to the sparkling lights and winter magic from November through February in this beautiful public space. Visitors can celebrate the magic of the season both day and night in festive Franklin Square, with evening activities beginning at 5 pm each evening. Winter in Franklin Square presented by Citizens featuring the Electrical Spectacle Light Show presented by PECO will sparkle from November 18, 2021 – February 27, 2022. Franklin Square is open November 18 – February 27 daily (closed November 26, December 25, January 1), 10 am - 9 pm, Fridays and Saturdays 10 am - 10 pm. The nighttime festivities run 5 - 9 pm daily, until 10 pm on Fridays and Saturdays.
New for 2021!
New this year, Winter in Franklin Square presented by Citizens continues all the way through Sunday, February 27 with new songs incorporated into the Electrical Spectacle Light Show presented by PECO (note new name!). Also, from November 18 – January 9, enjoy Franklin’s Winter View operated by Cescaphe with outdoor fire pits and a beautiful indoor heated tent featuring adult and hot beverages and seasonal food.
One of the highlights of winter fun for all ages is the Chilly Philly Mini Golf presented by IBEW Local 98, transforming Center City’s only miniature golf course both daytime and evenings. Experience lights, seasonal music, and larger than life wintertime friends throughout the course. The 18-hole game features reproductions of Philadelphia icons and landmarks. The fun lasts from November 18 – February 27, with love in the air for the month of February when Philly Mini Golf with Love takes over the course from February 1 - 27, 2022. Daytime tickets: $10 adults/$8 children (3-12); nighttime tickets (after 5 pm): $15 adults/$12 children (3-12); FREE for children under 2.

Nighttime in Franklin Square
The Franklin Square Electrical Spectacle Light Show presented by PECO is the key to holiday nighttime fun in Franklin Square. Sparked by Benjamin Franklin’s electrifying genius, Electrical Spectacle is a free light show that illuminates the Square nightly with shows every 30 minutes from 5 pm until closing. Visitors marvel at more than 150,000 lights (more than ever!) as they shimmer and illuminate the Square to a soundtrack of seasonal classics.
This season, Historic Philadelphia, Inc. debuts two new songs as part of the Electrical Spectacle Light Show. The first one, Feliz Navidad by José Feliciano, will kick off the holiday season on November 18, and run, rotating with four other songs, through January 9, 2022. Each show features two songs selecting from Feliz Navidad as well as past favorites Nutcracker Suite, Op. 71a - Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairies by Tchaikovsky with Nutcracker Suite, Op. 71a - Russian Dance performed by Charles Dutoit & L'Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal; Sleigh Ride performed by Peter Nero and The Philly POPS® featuring Ann Hampton Callaway; A Christmas Festival, performed by Peter Nero and The Philly POPS® featuring Ann Hampton Callaway; and Carol of the Bells (Starchild Excaliber Drumadelic Remix) performed by the London Festival Orchestra.
Beginning on January 10, Winter Wonderland by Johnny Mathis, another new song, will be the solo song for each show running nightly through February 27. Electrical Spectacle shows begin at 5 pm daily and run every 30 minutes until 9 pm Sundays – Thursdays and 10 pm on Friday & Saturdays, weather permitting.
Franklin’s Winter View
Franklin’s Winter View will operate nightly beginning at 5 pm (only through January 9) serving a variety of hand-crafted cocktails, classic and spiked hot chocolate, seasonal beers, and wine along with seasonal food. Enjoy the outdoor fire pits and seating throughout the Square as well as the beautiful indoor heated tent. SquareBurger also available both daytime and nighttime for comfort classics.
Seasonal Celebrations
Other celebrations include Santa Saturdays, Hanukkah Dreidel Giveaway with Old City Jewish Arts Center, and Kwanzaa Celebration with the African American Museum in Philadelphia. A Kids’ New Year’s Eve Countdown will ring in the New Year with the most family-friendly celebration in town. Friday, December 31, 4 - 9 pm begins with music and crafts at 4 pm before the Square Drop from atop SquareBurger at 6 pm and New Year’s Eve Fireworks on the Waterfront, viewable from the Square. The Franklin’s Winter View heated tent will host a Kids’ Dance Party until 9 pm, FREE.
Holidays at the Betsy Ross House
Historic Philadelphia also welcomes visitors to visit the Betsy Ross House. Coming in November, the Old City Menorah lighting returns in person to the Betsy Ross House. At 4:30 pm on Sunday, November 28, the Betsy Ross House will join the Old City Jewish Arts Center to host a community menorah lighting celebrating the first night of Hanukkah, complete with traditional foods like latke and doughnuts and menorahs for the younger guests. All food will be pre-wrapped to enjoy back at home.
The holiday festivities continue later in the week with a virtual tree lighting ceremony at 6 pm on Wednesday, December 1. The Betsy Ross House will again be the home of the majestic Old City Holiday Tree, designed by Old City’s Petit Jardin en Ville. The tree Lighting will be streamed live via Old City District’s Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/OldCityDistrict. The York Theatre Company (James Morgan, Producing Artistic Director; Evans Haile, Executive Director), dedicated to the development of new musicals and rediscovery of musical gems from the past, celebrates the legacy of the great American songwriter Irving Berlin with a special four-part virtual multimedia series. Theater historian – and York favorite -- Charles Troy returns to NYC with From Russia to Berlin: A Century of Irving 1888-1989, a multimedia presentation of Irving Berlin’s extraordinary 101-year journey from a poor Russian-Jewish boy, Izzy Baline, to the great American songwriter. The virtual presentations will be available online Monday evenings November 22 – December 13, 2021 beginning at 5:30PM.
These presentations are leading up to The York’s first mainstage production in twenty months, Cheek to Cheek: Irving Berlin in Hollywood which begins performances November 24, 2021.
From Russia to Berlin: A Century of Irving 1888-1989 Come on along on this four-session series exploring the 101-year life of the ultimate Jewish immigrant, Irving Berlin. Irving Berlin Goes Out with a Bang (1946 -1989)
Berlin wrote his greatest show, "Annie Get Your Gun," and another hit Ethel Merman show, "Call Me Madam," before changing tastes in music sent him into a long, reclusive eclipse.
Charles Troy has entertained York audiences in person with his presentations on the creation of My Fair Lady, Camelot, Gypsy and Funny Girl, as well as presentations on Cole Porter and Jerry Herman. During the pandemic, he has converted his extensive repertoire into more than 50 videos, suitable for virtual events.
