Books: Wish You Were Here
Today we are talking about Wish You Were Here, the latest book from best-selling author, Jodi Picoult. Diana is all set for a romantic vacation with her surgeon boyfriend, Finn, where he will surely ask her to marry him. However, Finn is unable to go as the Covid crisis is just heating up in New York City, where they reside, and he has to work. She arrives on the Island just as everything is being shut down due to Covid. She is forced to survive by her wits and quickly finds her life entwined with that of a local family, but then suddenly it turns out that nothing at all is like it seems. This very timely novel is about the way crisis makes us reassess our priorities and examine what is important to us and what we really want to do with our lives.
It's a little bit disconcerting, however, because one minute you think you are reading one kind of book, and then it turns out to be something completely different. If you are not ready to read a book that deals with the Covid crisis head-on even as we are still dealing with it, you will not want to read this book. Most of the chapters are very long as well so if you don't like books with extremely long chapters, you probably won't enjoy this book either. All in all, since the Covid crisis is something that affects us all and in fact, is still affecting us all, I think it might be too soon for this book.
Movies: The Captains of Za'atari
Today we are talking about Captains of Za'atari. This is a fairly short documentary about two boys living in a refugee camp in Syria hoping to use their soccer skills to get out and make a better life for themselves and their families. They are chosen to play in a tournament with an elite team, but their lives don't really change in the way they wanted to. This is a touching film that highlights what it is like for people living in these refugee camps and how hard it is for them to get out. However, in the end, you don't really feel like you learn enough about these boys and their lives and you find yourself wanting to know more.
Captains of Za'atari is availlable in select theaters and and on digital platforms now.
And that's our view. Tune in tomorrow for Where-To-Go Wednesday.
