The Little Match Girl is based on the Hans Christian Anderson story of the same name. It is about a little girl who is forced to stand out in the cold and snow to sell matches to help support her poor family. Although it is a children's story it is very dark. It is definitely not a show for very young children because they would probably find some parts disturbing. There are some lighter happier moments in the show when the little match girls lights a match to keep herself warm and dreams about the way her life could have been. These moments are the best parts of the show and these moments contain the lightest happiest most fun songs in the show. The acting and singing in this production were for the most part good. The dancing was good to. The costumes were very fitting. The set really made good use of the small space of the theater. If you like your fairy tales to stick very close to the original source material, you might like this show. However, if you are looking for a light happy family musical, this is not it.
