Robert Hartwell, founder and artistic director of The Broadway Collective, announces Project Next Gen, a scholarship award that brings underrepresented students—including people of color, immigrants, refugees, transgender, non-binary, and students from low-income school districts—to New York City for a week of Broadway training and mentorship. The Broadway Collective is a training academy offered online, in New York, and nearly 20 cities nationwide, for young performers who are serious about pursuing a career in the music theatre industry.
To help raise scholarship funds The Broadway Collective hosts a star-studded concert on Monday, June 17th at Haswell Green’s (240 West 52nd Street). Doors are at 7pm, the concert is at 8pm, followed by an after party sponsored by S.N.O.B. (Sunday Night on Broadway), a monthly Broadway industry party. An online auction will be open for biding, and donations will be accepted through a text to donate campaign. Performers include Emmy and Tony nominee Brandon Victor Dixon (Hamilton, Jesus Christ Superstar Live!), Tony nominee Adrienne Warren (Tina, Shuffle Along), and Jelani Alladin (Frozen, Hercules). LA MAMA – the 2018 Tony Award winning theater – will present the world premiere music drama from South Korea, 13 FRUITCAKES, written and directed by BYUNGKOO AHN, as part of the STONEWALL 50 festival at the Ellen Stewart Theater (66 E. 4 St.) in Manhattan, June 13-16.
13 FRUITCAKES depicts the story of Orlando, a fictional character, who inspires and encourages people to start fighting against social injustice and oppression by telling them stories about great gay ancestors, highlighting 13 noteworthy LGBTQ+ figures and their impact throughout history: from Eleanor Roosevelt to Hans Christian Andersen to Alan Turing to Leonardo da Vinci. The music drama is performed by a cast of Korean actors – including ‘More’ Zimin, the most prominent drag performer in Korea.
13 FRUITCAKES is comprised of 13 musical vignettes, with beautiful original songs composed by Gihieh Lee, lyrics by Lorca, Wilde, Whitman and other Queer Poets and Electronic Music by Los Angeles Laptop Collective.
13 FRUITCAKES, is presented as part of La MaMa’s pride programming, STONEWALL 50 AT LA MAMA, a festival of LGBTQ+ artists from NYC, Philadelphia, Paris, Italy, and South Korea being presented at the Tony Award-winning theater (66 E. 4 St.) in Manhattan, from May 23-June 30 as part of WORLD PRIDE. La MaMa Squirts (May 31-June 2), Global Gay (June 6-9), and Contradict This (June 20-30) are among other highlights during the month-long pride celebration.

Theater Breaking Through Barriers (Samuel D. Hunter’s The Healing) kicks off its 40th Anniversary with the World Premiere of PUBLIC SERVANT by Bekah Brunstetter (NBC’s Emmy-winning drama This Is Us and the just announced Oklahoma TV series). Directed by Geordie Broadwater, the production stars Chris Henry Coffey (Broadway’s Bronx Bombers, David Schwimmer’s Trust opposite Clive Owen and Viola Davis), Christine Bruno (Jose Rivera’s adaption of The Maids, Bekah Brunstetter’s Forgotten Corners... with TBTB) and newcomer Anna Lentz in her Off-Broadway debut. The play is the second part of a trilogy of plays by Brunstetter that kicked off with The Cake in February at Manhattan Theatre and is now playing at Theatre Row's Clurman Theatre.
In PUBLIC SERVANT, Ed has been newly elected as County Commissioner. Ed is one of the good ones. With his daughter Hannah by his side, he is going to change the world -- or at least his little corner of it. Meanwhile, all world-weary Miriam needs is to sell her late Mother’s house. Disillusioned with the system but desperate, she turns to Ed for help with what should be a simple request. But in the world of politics, is anything ever simple?

Bated Breath Theatre Company announces an extension of their acclaimed immersive, environmental production UNMAKING TOULOUSE-LAUTREC. Performances will now continue through August 7 at Madame X in Manhattan’s historic Greenwich Village, where performances began on May 8.
UNMAKING TOULOUSE-LAUTREC invites you to rediscover the bohemian world of the Belle Epoque with legendary artist Henri Toulouse-Lautrec and the women he immortalized. Dive into the underbelly of old Paris and rub shoulders with the dancers, prostitutes and outcasts that inspired the most enticing, elegant and provocative art ever to launch a thousand refrigerator magnets. Through imagery, text and dance UNMAKING TOULOUSE-LAUTREC explores the ecstasy of creativity against the agony of the body in the sexiest art history lesson you'll ever have.
