Mom's view: Smart Blonde is the story of the actress, Judy Holliday. who although known for playing dumb blondes in actuality was said to have a genius IQ. It is a very timely story in this age of women finding their power and standing up for themselves. It might seem that Judy represents the opposite of this, but she chose to play the dumb blonde and used it to her advantage as when she was under investigation for possible communist ties. Andrea Burns is diversely cast in the role of Judy Holliday. Although in reality Andrea is half Jewish herself, she is perhaps more known for playing Latino roles as in On Your Feet and In the Heights. She is definitely not the first person you would think of for the role of Judy Holliday. However, she really loses herself in the role and does a terrific job with it. She does an especially great job of getting across the juxtaposition of strentgh and vulnerability within Ms. Holliday. The show will leave you in awe both of Ms. Burns acting and of Judy Holliday and the grace with which she endured everything that life threw at her and perservered until life's final blow when she succumbed to cancer shortly before her 44th birthday.
And that's Mom's view. Tune in tomorrow for Tips for Tuesday.
