I started this blog with one daughter, kept it up with the other, to spend time together doing something we enjoyed.
However, things change and people evolve. My daughters are older, busier, and not as interested in writing.
From now on this blog will be mostly mom with occasional contributions from my daughters and maybe even my husband.
Nothing else will change. We'll still focus on sharing fun places to go, fun things to do, and more, and we would  still love to hear your views too

BROADWAYCON INDUSTRY DAY BRINGS TOGETHER TOP INDUSTRY PROFESSIONALS
TO EXPLORE THE BROADWAY FAN EXPERIENCE

PANELS ANNOUNCED CURATED BY
MIKE KRIAK (COO, MASHABLE),
BRISA TRINCHERO (CEO, SHOOWIN INC.),
TIM KASHANI (CEO, APPLES AND ORANGES STUDIOS and IT MENTORS)
BroadwayCon is pleased to announce initial programming for BroadwayCon Industry Day. BroadwayCon Industry Day will feature panels facilitated by Mike Kriak, Broadway producer and COO of Mashable, Broadway producer and sports entrepreneur Brisa Trinchero, and Broadway producer and technology entrepreneur Tim Kashani. Additional panels, curators, and keynotes will be announced at a later date. Curated by Situation, BroadwayCon Industry Day will take place on Thursday, January 25, 2018 at the Crowne Plaza Times Square Manhattan. For more information, please visit www.BroadwayCon.com/IndustryDay.

The Future of Broadway Fan Engagement
Broadway fans used to demonstrate their love for a show by saving the Playbill or buying a poster. Today, shows’ brand managers are constantly pushing out new content, and fans are hungry for even more. Mike Kriak (Broadway producer and COO of Mashable) moderates a panel of media and content storytellers discussing how Broadway fans can remain connected to their favorite brands in the future of digital-driven media.

A Page from the Sports Section
Go into town on game day and from the supermarkets to the shopping malls, everyone is wearing their team colors and discussing their favorite players. Why should the day of the Tony Awards be any different? Broadway producer and sports entrepreneur Brisa Trinchero moderates a panel of leading sports brand experts on the making and nurturing of fan relationships and what Broadway can learn from them.

The Role of Technology in Advancing the Fan Relationship
Ten years ago, we couldn’t have imagined that a show could stream its final curtain call live to Facebook for a million viewers, or that that photos and videos tweeted to a show’s account could end up in an onstage montage. What do the next ten years have in store? Broadway producer and technology entrepreneur Tim Kashani introduces us to the leading technology voices emerging from Silicon Valley that have the potential to expand the fan experience, both inside and outside the theater.

BroadwayCon Industry Day will bring together a diverse group of speakers, all united in their passion for fostering unique experiences for Broadway’s fans. The full speaker lineup and schedule will be announced at a later date.

GET A SNEAK PEEK AT BROADWAYCON 2018 PROGRAMMING
THREE NEW PANELS ANNOUNCED
In advance of the full schedule, BroadwayCon is pleased to announce three new panels for BroadwayCon 2018. From exploring the challenges of playing real people to critiquing works from other time periods and much more, BroadwayCon programming will offer something for everyone. BroadwayCon returns to the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center Friday, January 26 through Sunday, January 28, 2018. Tickets for BroadwayCon 2018 are available for purchase now at www.BroadwayCon.com/register.
Playing Real People
Character study can be really important. Actors write elaborate backstories for their characters that inform the choices they make onstage. But what about when that character is a real person? Hear from people involved in translating real-life stories to the stage about the extra challenges and rewards that come from telling a true story.

To BFA or not to BFA…

Join theatre professionals from all backgrounds as they discuss their paths from high school graduation to today. Hear their thoughts on which degree programs worked for them, why they chose their schools, and what they’d do differently if they could do it all again.

Your Fave is Problematic
Fans of classic (and even modern) works of art often find themselves in a bind: A show with a gorgeous score or a hilarious monologue doesn’t meet 2018’s standards for what’s appropriate in terms of race, gender, or sexuality. We’ll put our heads together and discuss how to judge works created in another time period and how we can appreciate them while remaining cognizant of the elements we shouldn’t replicate today.

Previously announced Special Guests include Co-Creator Anthony Rapp, as well as Christy Altomare, Alessandra Baldacchino, Nicholas Barasch, Laura Benanti, William Berloni, Griffin Birney, Heidi Blickenstaff, Stephanie J. Block, Sierra Boggess, Alex Brightman, Andrea Burns, Liz Callaway, Ben Cameron, Carolee Carmello, Donna Lynne Champlin, Adam Chanler-Berat, Andrew Chappelle, Jenn Colella, Lilli Cooper, Veanne Cox, Janet Dacal, Ariana DeBose, Ben Fankhauser, Drew Gasparini, Gideon Glick, Annie Golden, Randy Graff, Molly Hager, Lennon Nate Hammond, Ann Harada, Rodney Hicks,  Patrick Hinds, Noah Hinsdale, Emma Hunton, Georgi James, Jay Armstrong Johnson, Andrew Keenan-Bolger, Maggie Keenan-Bolger, Chad Kimball, Derek Klena, Michael John LaChiusa, Raymond J. Lee, Sydney Lucas, Rick Lyon, Lesli Margherita, Chris McCarrell, Ruthie Ann Miles, Zell Steele Morrow, Donna Murphy, Kelli O’Hara, Laura Osnes, Bryce Pinkham, Gabriella Pizzolo, Anthony Rosenthal, Pierson Salvador, Kyle Scatliffe, Alexandra Silber, Leigh Silverman, James Snyder, Oscar Williams, and Doug Wright. This Festival favorite of intimate performances undergoes a make-over for NAMT’s 29th season! This year, instead of featuring cut songs from the current crop of Festival shows, The 46th Minute one-night-only event catches up with past shows, shining a spotlight on eight shows that were featured at the Festival of New Musicals over the past decade.

NAMT members may purchase tickets at the lowest possible price when registering for the Fall Conference and/or Festival of New Musicals. Non-members may go to Telecharge or the New World Stages box office.

The cast includes Eden Espinosa (Broadway: Wicked), Adam Halpin (Broadway:  Dear Evan Hansen),Brittney Johnson (Broadway: Beautiful, Motown, Sunset Boulevard, Les Miserables), Mike O'Brien(Regional: Three Philly Tenors), Bonnie Milligan (National Tour: Kinky Boots), Megan McGinnis(Broadway: Side Show, Les Mis)Lars Mølsted (Reumert Talent Prize for Best Singer), Eric William Morris (Broadway: Coram Boy, Mamma Mia) and Zach Prince (Broadway: Honeymoon in Vegas),

This year’s The 46th Minute will feature songs from:

BEATSVILLE (Festival 2008) by Glenn Slater and Wendy Wilf

Greenwich Village, 1959—Playground of bohemians,
beatniks and jazzbos. Tragically square Walter Paisley finds that his clay figures, sculpted nudes, and papier-maché busts bring him the acceptance he desperately yearns for. But what if the world discovers that Walter’s body of work consists of actual bodies? A bebop-inflected black comedy/satire.

BERNICE BOBS HER HAIR (Festival 2011) by Adam Gwon and Julia Jordan

Bernice Bobs Her Hair is based on the classic short story of the same name by F. Scott Fitzgerald as well as letters he wrote to his sister.  It is a story of "the shifting, semi-cruel world of adolescence" set in a time of transformation for American women. Young men and women dance and flirt and engage in character assassination in the time-honored pursuit of romance and status. The story is retold with an eye to the future which Fitzgerald anticipates but could not have predicted.

BIG RED SUN (Festival 2010) by Georgia Stitt and John Jiler

A teenage boy unearths a dark family secret as he searches for his long-lost father through the bewildering landscape of post-WWII America… where innocence has vanished, and the simple melodies of Kern and Berlin have been replaced by the dizzying energy of jazz and the birth of rock-and-roll.

LEGENDALE (Festival 2015) by Andrea Daly and Jeff Bienstock

Legendale is an original, contemporary comedy about the power of fantasy. Andy’s favorite way to escape his humdrum life is the online game “Legendale.” He dreams of victory in the game’s
tournament, but gets stuck competing as a lowly milkmaid, whose sole skill is crafting cheese. When the game world takes a sudden turn for the unexpected, Andy and his avatar must both learn how to summon their inner warriors. Legendale blends romance, adventure and virtual reality, over a pop-infused score.

LIZZIE (Festival 2010) by Steven Cheslik-DeMeyer, Alan Stevens
Hewitt and Tim Maner

A rock show retelling of the bloody legend of America’s first and favorite
axe-wielding double murderess and Victorian hometown girl, Lizzie Borden. Featuring four fierce rocker girls and a live band, this driving musical reveals why Lizzie took up that axe and how she became an American folk hero.

MY HEART IS THE DRUM (Festival 2013) by Jennie Redling, Phillip
Palmer and Stacey Luftig

Efua Kuti is determined to leave her small village in Ghana and attend university, against all odds. Defying her parents, she risks everything to set off for the big city. But what awaits her there is more dangerous than she dared imagine, and she finds that more than just her dreams are at stake. With driving rhythms and rich vocal harmonies, this big, coming-of-age musical celebrates the promise within us all.

THE NOTEWORTHY LIFE OF HOWARD BARNES (Festival 2014) by Christopher Dimond and Michael Kooman

Howard Barnes is a perfectly average, if emotionally repressed, man in his early thirties. That is, until the day that he wakes up to discover that his life has become a musical. Desperate to escape from the show and get his normal life back, Howard teams up with Maggie, an aspiring actress who works in his office. Together, the two embark on a fantastical quest through the realm of musical theater. Along the way, Howard discovers that he must let go of the past and open himself up to the possibility of love. In doing so, he learns to embrace the music. Equal parts satire, romantic comedy, and love letter to the American musical, The Noteworthy
life of Howard Barnes is intended for people who love musical theater, and their spouses who hate it.

TRIANGLE (Festival 2012) by Thomas Mizer and Curtis Moore

An original mystery-romance, Triangle tells two love stories, set in the same New York City building but a hundred years apart. As lives begin to weave together across the century, long-buried secrets are uncovered and ghosts of the past begin to influence the future.

The 46th Minute is sponsored by Goodspeed Musicals (Lead Sponsor), Fredericia Theater and New Works Development Centre Uterus and McCoy Rigby Entertainment with La Mirada Theatre (Supporting Sponsors).

Music Director:  David Gardos (Assoc. Conducted: FalsettosFinding Neverland)

Darling Grenadine is a seriocomic musical about Harry, a fanciful jingle composer, and his precarious relationships with his girlfriend Louise, his brother Paul, and his Labrador Retriever (...also named Paul).  Told with a rich contemporary score and a wink to the classic MGM musical style, Darling Grenadine explores the friction between romance and reality, bitter and sweet, serving something magical, moving, and boldly new.

FALL SPRINGS music & lyrics by Niko Tsakalakos, book & lyrics by Peter Sinn Nachtrieb
Director: Stephen Brackett (NY: The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical, Buyer & Seller)
Music Director: Emily Marshall (Nat’l Tours of A Chorus Line and We Will Rock You)

Fall Springs is a semi-charming, cash-strapped town that sits directly on top of America’s largest reserve of cosmetic essential oils. It has big dreams, but at what cost? With new fracking techniques being recklessly implemented, the ground beneath Fall Springs is crumbling. Boulders, sheds, and the occasional bartender are being swallowed into the ground. And that’s only the beginning.

GIRL SHAKES LOOSE
Music & lyrics by Imani Uzuri, book & lyrics by Zakiyyah Alexander, poetry by Sonia Sanchez
Director: May Adrales (MTC’s Lortel Award-winning production of Vietgone)

GIRL Shakes Loose is a three-city coming-of-age journey. GIRL finds herself in New York, unemployed, suddenly single and must figure out where she’s going and why she keeps making the same mistakes. It’s up to GIRLto figure out where home is and how (and if) she’ll get there.

KLOOK'S LAST STAND book by Ché Walker, music by Omar Lyefook & Anoushka Lucas,
Lyrics by Ché Walker & Anoushka Lucas
Director: Jonathan McCrory (NYHandsUp, Blacken the Bubble, Enter Your Sleep)

Klook is a drifter who’s gotten too old to drift. Vinette is on the run but she doesn’t know what’s chasing her. Together they make a tentative stab at happiness, before the past they are evading begins to catch up with them. Tough, tender, funny and poignant, Klook’s Last Stand will grab you from the inside out. Soulful music and a lyrical text make this a mesmerizing theatre experience.

PERSEPHONE, book & lyrics by Marcus Stevens, music by Oran Eldor
Director: Andy Sandberg (NY: Straight, Application Pending)
Music Director: Ian Axness (New Dramatists: Lempicka, Scheherezade and Barefoot Persephone)

In Persephone, a myth is raised from the dead, the gods are celebrities hounded by the paparazzi, and their saga is set to a pop/rock score. Teenage Persephone longs for independence from her mother Demeter, but her wish gets distorted when she finds herself trapped in the Underworld by Greece’s perennial bad boy, Hades. What follows is an off-beat, emotionally-charged coming-of-age story for ancient and modern times.

Music Director: Mark Hartman (NY: The Dead, 1904, Pageant- The Musical)

Director: Lonny Price (Broadway: Sunset Boulevard) and Matt Cowart (Asst Dir: Broadway: Sunset Boulevard)
Music Director: Cody Owen Stine (Roundabouts’s The Robber Bridegroom)

Prom Queen is inspired by the incredible, true story of Marc Hall, the Canadian teenager who took the Catholic School Board to court when they refused to let him attend prom with his boyfriend. In this fun and uplifting musical, Marc has to learn to be his own hero and fight for the right to be himself.

SAM'S ROOM book by Dale Sampson with Trey Coates-Mitchell,
Music & lyrics by Caitlin Marie Bell, Marc Campbell & Dale Sampson
Director: Jaki Bradley (Regional:  RowGood Men Wanted. NY: Playing Hot, I’ve Been to Sea Before)

Queer Butoh 2017
at Howl! Happening
October 19, 2017 at 6pm

Howl! Happening in association with The New York Butoh Institute and Vangeline Theater present Queer Butoh 2017, a free three-hour evening of site-specific Butoh performances with three LGBT/Q Butoh artists from San Francisco, Chicago and New York: Angela Newsham, Holly Chernobyl, and Will Atkins. The event will take place on Thursday, October 19, 2017 at 6pm at Howl! Happening, 6 E. First Street, NYC. For more information, visitwww.vangeline.

The artists will dance throughout the evening yet maintain a fluid space of interaction with the audience. The unique minimalist soundscape featured includes recordings of the artists in candid conversations about the role, which butoh has played in their lives. The installation will take place against the unique background of sculptures by Japanese artist Mazao Gozu.

In Butoh, the desire to play with notions of both "masculine" and "feminine" has been expressed in performance methodology by both male and female artists. The five contemporary artists will create new work and speak about how they integrate Butoh into their art and lives.

The Vangeline Theater has been a leader in the development of contemporary Butoh dance since it's founding in 2002. Informed by the expansive vision of pioneering choreographer Vangeline, the Vangeline Theater brings to life a timeless and uniquely American style of Butoh that continues to captivate audiences. The Vangeline Theater is home to the New York Butoh Institute, providing superior Butoh training to our community. The New York Butoh Institute is dedicated to the advancement of Butoh in the 21st century, with a special emphasis on scientific research as it relates to Butoh. www.vangeline.com

Her daughter Jeanine breaks out to become a huge country star and her youngest, Jamie Lynn, is sent to boarding schools to protect her from the limelight. When Jamie Lynn sings the heck out of her sister’s signature hit in a Karaoke bar, a smart phone video goes viral, it sets the family on a crisis of identity and they are forced to confront a long-held secret. Like the title song says, “if you don’t know your part, just play it by heart.”
