For those still not ready to let go of Halloween and move on to the next set of holidays, there are still a few remaining performances of Bat Boy the musical at New York's City Center. This 1990s cult comedy horror musical is the story of a creature that is half man, half bat. Although the story does not make complete sense, and at times it can be a bit much for those of a more sensitive nature, it is mostly a fun show full of quirky characters and rousing songs.
Kerry Butler's appearance in the role of the mother of the family who takes in the Bat Boy, after first having appeared as the daughter in the show's original run, adds an extra layer of appeal, especially for those who saw that initial run. However, this show clearly belongs to Taylor Trensch, who plays the title role. From his earliest appearance onstage as a creature with no language skills, he fully inhabits the role, and you can't take your eyes off him. Even later, when he has transitioned into a more sophisticated, more human character with an inexplicable English accent and a vestigial taste for blood, he still completely commands the stage. It's a performance you won't want to miss.
