I started this blog with one daughter, kept it up with the other, to spend time together doing something we enjoyed.
However, things change and people evolve. My daughters are older, busier, and not as interested in writing.
From now on this blog will be mostly mom with occasional contributions from my daughters and maybe even my husband.
Nothing else will change. We'll still focus on sharing fun places to go, fun things to do, and more, and we would  still love to hear your views too

4) Eisa Davis' The Essentialsn't

In this rebellious piece driven by original, pulsing music, Eisa Davis troubles the obligations that a Black woman’s body has to perform, rejecting the philosophy of essentialism—the idea that people can be categorized by an unchanging essence or set of qualities they inherently possess. Davis creates porous, evocative imagery through the use of striking set elements, such as transforming the space into a white box and singing in a tank of water. Drawing on diasporic traditions that form a continuum between the past and the present, The Essentialisn't challenges audiences to destabilize their own unconscious ways of perceiving themselves and others.

Can he survive the return of a bitter Roger Ailes? Come and watch Planet Earth’s most controversial media magnate, Rupert Murdoch, face the cameras, a live audience and a mysterious interviewer as he attempts to secure his legacy. Over ninety minutes Murdoch encounters family members, revisits Presidents, wrangles with newspaper editors, collides with “Fox News” creator, Roger Ailes, and finally, wrestles, literally, with an inscrutable monster. It’s the shocking, fair and balanced interview you’ve been waiting for, written by an unnamed source, brought to life by a single actor.

6) The Porch on Windy Hill

The Porch on Windy Hill blends Appalachian, Old Time and Bluegrass songs with a deeply personal, contemporary story of discovery and reconciliation. The show follows Mira, a biracial Korean American classical violinist, and her folk-song-collector boyfriend Beckett as they escape pandemic isolation in Brooklyn and journey to the mountains of western North Carolina. When they unexpectedly reconnect with Mira’s estranged grandfather, Edgar, they uncover a tangled legacy of love, loss, and music—and discover the unforeseen harmony that can arise when generations and genres collide.

7) This is Not a Drill

Based on terrifying true events that creator Holly Doubet experienced, THIS IS NOT A DRILL takes audiences inside the surreal chaos of a morning in 2018, when an emergency alert warned Hawaii residents and visitors of an incoming missile attack. As fear grips the island, strangers and loved ones alike are forced to confront their mortality and their humanity. Set to a soaring and heartfelt score, this powerful new musical tells the story of connection, compassion, and what truly matters when time stands still.

In Person

Saturday, September 13, 7 pm

The 92nd Street Y and New York’s 2025/26 Harkness Dance Center are proud to announce the opening of their mainstage series with Swing Out Loud: Women Move the World, a swing party with LaTasha Barnes and One BadA** Swing Band.

In a season dedicated entirely to works curated, created, and choreographed by women, Swing Out Loud is a night of joy, rhythm, and resistance. Led by multi-Bessie Award winner and internationally renowned artist-scholar LaTasha Barnes, this Swing Dance Party is a lesson, a tribute, and a celebration.

The evening begins with dance instruction and unfolds into a community social — a space for acknowledgment, sharing, and improvisation. Swing, Lindy Hop, Jazz — in LaTasha Barnes’ world, they are not relics. They are living, breathing practices, born of lives deeply lived, containing histories and holding blueprints for both future expressions and the tools to choose how we exist in our present moment. Bring friends, dancing shoes, and your whole self (in your most dapper fit) — and swing into the new season of Harkness Dance Center.

New York Profiles showcases five American composers whose works reflect the diverse musical styles of mid-20th-century America, and their lasting influence on both the city and American music. These composers, living and working in New York during the 1940s and ’50s, contributed to what is known as the “Golden Age” of American Classical music. Aaron Copland, a defining voice of American music, made New York his home while composing Appalachian Spring, an homage to American pioneer life. Henry Cowell shaped New York’s early experimental music scene, as heard in his Hymn and Fuguing Tune No. 10. Julia Perry was closely connected to such New York musical institutions as Lincoln Center, where her A Short Piece for Small Orchestra was performed and recorded. Ulysses Kay, whose “Joy and Fears” is drawn from his soundtrack to The Quiet One, was also a key figure in New York’s cultural world, while Norman Dello Joio’s New York Profiles is a vivid musical portrait composed as a tribute to his native New York.

Attendance for both performances is free, no RSVP required. Bryant Park staff lends out hundreds of free picnic blankets, provides bistro chairs, and offers a curated selection of food and drink to purchase from local vendors. Seating will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.

25) From Farm to Stage: Treehouse Shakers Bring "Hatched"

to Flushing Town Hall

Acclaimed children’s theater company presents original play for

very young audiences

On Sunday, September 14, Flushing Town Hall will present Treehouse Shakers’ Hatched. This delightful interactive play experience for children aged 1-6 is a wonderful first introduction to theater for the youngest audience members.

Hatched, written and directed by Mara McEwin, artistic director of Treehouse Shakers, is the original performance of a newborn chick emerging from her shell at sunrise to a strange and busy world. Performed through movement, handcrafted puppets, and very little human dialogue, the story is set amidst an American family farm. The chick is met by a feisty old rooster, a wobbly calf learning to walk, a gaggle of dancing chicks, a lamb, and a noisy nest of baby birds.

Intimately staged, young audience members are encouraged to interact with the newborn “animals” as they explore their worlds. Through movement and music, the calf learns to walk, the baby birds attempt to fly, and the lamb makes a new friend with the curious hatched chick.

Hatched engages children through a unique hands-on approach to theater. Children interact and play with the characters on stage; they give the chicks their feed, milk bottles to the lamb, are licked by the cow, and feed worms to the baby birds. Babies in the audience will be enticed by the animal sounds and textures, while toddlers will love watching and imitating their favorite farm animals as they come to life. Preschoolers will enjoy learning about life on the farm, and older kids will be entertained by the charming storytelling, live music and dance. Hatched is a beautiful tale, told through exquisite visuals, music, and the exploration of baby animals on the farm for the whole family.

Works & Process Presents

HILDEGARD

By Sarah Kirkland Snider

Guggenheim New York

Monday, September 15, 2025

A collaboration between

Beth Morrison Projects/PROTOTYPE Festival,

LA Opera, and Aspen Music Festival and School

Works & Process presents HILDEGARD on Monday, September 15, 2025 at Guggenheim New York in the Peter B. Lewis Theater, 1071 Fifth Avenue, New York, NY 10128 at 7 PM. Tickets start at $25 and can be purchased here.

Join creative producer Beth Morrison; Christopher Koelsch, President and CEO, LA Opera; director Elkhanah Pulitzer; and composer Sarah Kirkland Snider for a discussion on the commissioning and creation of HILDEGARD, the composer’s first opera.

Set in 1147, HILDEGARD follows the brilliant, pioneering composer Hildegard von Bingen as she receives visions from God. Always at risk of being condemned by the church as a heretic, she decides to document her visions, enlisting her fellow nun Richardis von Stade to illustrate the manuscript. As their passion project bleeds into passion, the two women must confront the powers that would see them struck from history rather than making it.

Singers Nola Richardson and Mikaela Bennett, accompanied by Contemporaneous Ensemble will perform highlights from this intimate tale of two genius women finding their voices, ahead of the opera’s rolling world premiere this November in Los Angeles with LA Opera and in January at PROTOTYPE Festival in New York—marking the sixteenth collaboration between Beth Morrison Projects and LA Opera.
