I started this blog with one daughter, kept it up with the other, to spend time together doing something we enjoyed.
However, things change and people evolve. My daughters are older, busier, and not as interested in writing.
From now on this blog will be mostly mom with occasional contributions from my daughters and maybe even my husband.
Nothing else will change. We'll still focus on sharing fun places to go, fun things to do, and more, and we would  still love to hear your views too

1) Spinner

Spinner takes audiences on a journey into the human spirit, where determination collides with obsession, and the dreams we chase can either lift us to greatness or tear everything we love apart. The play shares the true story of NHL player Brian “Spinner” Spencer, while simultaneously providing a reflection of the risks, rewards, and regrets we all face when chasing something bigger than ourselves. It’s a powerful tale of sacrifice, family, and the lengths we’ll go to make our dreams a reality, even when the cost is too high.

Belfast, 1979. At the height of the Troubles, two off-duty British soldiers think they’ve hit it off with two local girls at a unionist pub on the city’s outskirts. But what begins as a night of flirtation and playful sparring soon turns dark. Decades later, as one of the soldiers recounts the events for an American oral history project, long-buried memories resurface, drawing him back to Belfast in search of answers and revenge.

7) Iranian Girlfriend

It’s the middle of June and you’re at an airport bar. She’s perched in a corner drinking gin and reading about revolution in dark times. She’s got a line from a poem tattooed on her arm and you ask her who wrote it. She makes you strawberry jam and tells you about Sylvia Plath and other women who lived through wars, contemplated divorce, and bought a lot of fancy dresses. It’s almost winter now and you bring her home to meet your parents. They think her name is interesting.

A darkly comic performance installation about displacement, divorce, and dark times, Iranian Girlfriend combines solo performance, video installation, and runway fashion to unpack the untold history and precious objects of a woman on the run, challenging America’s narrow sense of self while offering fresh perspectives on womanhood and belonging.

The Maenads is a fast-paced, comedic thriller about five men who climb a mountain to cosplay as maenads — female followers of Dionysus — and free themselves from the prison of modern masculinity. But even a playful invocation of the God of Chaos has its consequences as the men soon find themselves stranded without food, water, or cell signals, drunk and tripping balls in an increasingly hostile environment.

Desperate to survive but equally desperate not to leave the mountain unchanged, the men are forced to confront the lies and fears that drove them to this performance of ecstatic femininity in the first place.

It follows Milo, a schlubby lighting booth guy with big dreams of stepping into the spotlight, and his best friend Annabelle. As secrets unravel and covert operations collide, Milo navigates the chaos and might just save the world while performing on that glorious, tiny stage.

When disco diva, Deloris Van Cartier, witnesses a murder, she is put in protective custody in the one place the cops are sure she won't be found: a convent! Disguised as a nun, she finds herself at odds with both the rigid lifestyle and uptight Mother Superior. Using her unique disco moves and singing talent to inspire the choir, Deloris breathes new life into the church and community, but, in doing so, blows her cover. Soon, the gang is giving chase, only to find themselves up against Deloris and the power of her newly found sisterhood.

11) Slam Frank

Inspired by the viral Twitter thread that asked, “Did Anne Frank ever acknowledge her white privilege?”SLAM FRANK is a new musical that imagines what happens when a progressive community theater company decides “now is not the time to center privileged, straight, white Europeans (who happened to be hiding from Nazis).”

Instead, they transform Anne Frank’s true story into a genderqueer, multi-ethnic, intersectionally feminist, Afro-Latin hip-hop musical. The result is Slam Frank, a genre-defying musical satire that’s igniting debate long before opening night. The show reimagines Anne Frank’s life through a self-aware lens of overzealous inclusivity: Anita Franco is now a pansexual Latinx girlboss with a hip-hop diary flow; Peter Van Daan is a non-binary dancer struggling against gender norms; and Mister Van Daan, the lone cis male, is literally worse than the Nazis.

What begins as a personal inquiry becomes a profound reckoning with silence and accountability.

16) Wastelandia

WASTELANDIA is a performance ritual constructed from recycled plastic that invites the audience to engage in a multi-layered visual and immersive experience. Through theater, dance, discussions, craft-making, and visual art, the audience is taken on an interactive journey that examines our dependency on fossil fuels and asks how we can be better stewards of the earth.

WASTELANDIA is a mash-up between a DIY Haunted house, Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory, and a dance performance. The experience begins in The Greenroom, which is an interactive educational space where the audience can:

  • Participate in creative reuse workshops such as making beads out of plastic straws or musical instruments out of discarded objects in collaboration with Materials for the Arts.
  • Color in a chalk mural depicting images and quotes by seven remarkable Black and Hispanic women who are social justice and environmental activists in the Staten Island Community: Debbie Anne Paige, Dorcas Meyers, Heather Butts, Jasi (Jasmine) Robinson, Kelly Vilar, Lori Love, Petula Gay
  • Listen and/or participate in a discussion on how we can responsibly divest from fossil fuels, viable alternatives to fossil fuel based plastics, as well as the health implications of microplastics accumulating in our brains and internal organs.

From The Greenroom, the audience traverses through an interactive tunnel of plastic (The Birth Canal); meets the spirit guardians and the trash behemoth (Spirit Room); and helps construct an installation (The Wasteland) out of plastic trash. The inhabitants of The Wasteland come together through Afro-Brazilian and Contemporary dance to forge a sense of community and empowerment; and to build The Wastelandia Gameshow, where two audience contestants are invited to answer multiple-choice questions about plastic consumption, recycling and alternatives. The Gameshow includes the presentation of a Green Award to the mural honorees.

29) American Museum of Natural History Announces Programs

and Installations for Climate Week NYC

Diorama Installation Reframes Historic Scenes

Through Lens of Climate Challenges

Events include all-ages festival, an assembly about climate resilience,

the launch of the Climate Learning Lab, a convening for educators, and more

This September, the American Museum of Natural History will offer a slate of programming in conjunction with Climate Week NYC, an annual gathering of global leaders, activists, and organizations.

Museum programming (list below) runs from Friday, September 19, through Monday, September 29. Eight of the Museum’s dioramas across three historic exhibition halls will be transformed through large-scale graphics and interactive media to highlight the effects of climate change and human activity on our planet’s ecosystems, biodiversity, and health. Familiar scenes that will be reinterpreted through this lens include three in the Bernard Family Hall of North American Mammals, including the Alaska Moose Diorama that will tell the story of how climate change affects tick populations and the implications for human and animal health; three in the Milstein Hall of Ocean Life, including the Dolphin and Tuna Diorama where visitors will learn about threats posed by plastics and play a game about removing them; and two in the Hall of North American Forests, including the Mixed Deciduous Forest Diorama that will investigate wildfires.

Program offerings include ClimateFest, a full-day, all-ages event that will bring the science of climate change to life through hands-on activities, communal art projects, and more; the AMNH Climate Assembly, a participatory gathering where guests are invited to take part in a series of collaborative discussions and activities that envision how New Yorkers can adapt and thrive on our changing planet; Climate Resilience in Action, an evening of music, lectures, and expert perspectives highlighting on-the-ground efforts to address the effects of climate change; The Art & Science of Storytelling for Climate Progress panel discussion; the launch of a new Climate Learning Lab dedicated to teaching climate science that will be available for drop-in visits on select weekend days; and an event for educators, policymakers, and thought leaders about increasing climate literacy and integrating climate education in the classroom.

Dioramas: Exploring Climate Change

Friday, September 19–Monday, September 29

From Friday, September 19, through Monday, September 29, eight Museum dioramas are being transformed to highlight the effects of climate change and human activity on our planet’s ecosystems, biodiversity, and our health. Visitors can view familiar scenes through a lens of climate challenges and explore stories of climate resilience in large-scale graphics and interactive media. Locations include:

  • Milstein Hall of Ocean Life
    • Dolphin and Tuna Diorama: Discover the new threat posed by plastics (and help remove them).
    • Walrus Diorama: Find out how habitat loss can lead to overcrowding and competition for resources.
    • Andros Coral Reef Diorama: Explore the threat of coral bleaching to marine life.
  • Bernard Family Hall of North American Mammals
    • Alaska Moose Diorama: Find out how climate change affects tick populations and what that means for animal and human health.
    • Alaska Brown Bear Diorama: Explore how this ecosystem, represented as it was one hundred years ago, might have changed.
    • American Bison and Pronghorn Diorama: Discover what happens when grasslands are converted to croplands.
  • Hall of North American Forests
    • Mixed Deciduous Forest: See if you can tell fact from fiction when it comes to threats of wildfires and impacts on human health.
    • Southeastern Coastal Plain Forest: Discover why wetlands are crucial in protecting against floods.

ClimateFest

Saturday, September 20, 10 am–4 pm

A full-day celebration of science, sustainability, and community, this all-ages event will bring the science of climate change and its impact on human health to life through hands-on activities, communal art projects, pop-up presentations, and live demonstrations across the Museum. At the event, visitors will be able to:

  • Watch dynamic performances from Indigenous Enterprise as they light up the Milstein Hall of Ocean Life with the power of powwow song and dance
  • Contribute to a community climate art project and join discussions with Climate Cafe and Climate Imaginarium on how to process climate anxieties
  • Experience Eyes on Earth, a live visualization station where scientists will demonstrate how satellite research is helping us understand the impacts of climate change on our planet and our health
  • See a documentary, listen to a children’s storytime, create keepsakes out of recyclables, participate in demonstrations, and more

The Art & Science of Storytelling for Climate Progress

Monday, September 22, 3 pm

In an era of declining public trust, museums remain among the most trusted institutions. How are museums using their expertise to lead cutting-edge climate storytelling? The Yale Program on Climate Change Communication (YPCC) conducts research to help museums of all types—natural history, art, science, and history museums—engage audiences around climate change. Join YPCC for a panel discussion with museum and exhibition designers about how museums are blending data with storytelling, identifying new ways to inform and inspire visitors to act on climate change, and how successful strategies from museums can be applied more broadly across the climate movement. The panel will include leaders from the Climate Museum, the Natural History Museum of Utah, The Wild Center, the Association of Science and Technology Centers, the American Museum of Natural History, and experience designers Sitara Systems, whose projects included climate change interactive exhibits for the Yale Peabody Museum.

AMNH Climate Assembly

Thursday, September 25, 4:30 pm

The AMNH Climate Assembly will invite participants to a live, city-wide conversation about climate resilience. During an energizing 90-minute session in the Museum’s Gottesman Research Library and Learning Centerparticipants will gather in small groups, share perspectives, and hear from neighbors and strangers alike as they imagine how New Yorkers can adapt and thrive in a changing climate. Guided by the Iswe Foundation and the Museum’s Center for Biodiversity and Conservation, the session will offer a rare chance for New Yorkers to feel the power of collective problem-solving and leave inspired by the creativity and commitment of community.

Climate Resilience in Action

Thursday, September 25, 7 pm

As climate change reshapes our cities, communities, and health, New York stands at a crossroads—an international city with a responsibility to lead and an opportunity to act. This evening event will include music by Madame Gandhi, an electronic music producer, artist, and activist, as well as a lecture demonstration where she will share her experience recording sounds from nature, integrating them into her music, and including nature in royalties. A series of Lightning Lectures will showcase on-the-ground work by local organizations across the five boroughs, from rooftop farming and urban forestry to public cooling infrastructure and community organizing.

A keynote presentation by Rohit T. Aggarwala, Commissioner of the New York City Department of Environmental Protection and the City’s Chief Climate Officer, will highlight how New York City is advancing its climate and sustainability goals, offering insight into how local governments are preparing for the growing challenges of climate change.

Climate Learning Lab

Opens Saturday, September 20, 10:30 am–5 pm; select Saturdays and Sundays, Noon – 5 pm

In this investigation-driven learning lab designed for ages 8 and up, visitors will have the opportunity to learn about climate, climate change, and what we can do to address our warming planet. Located on the third floor of the Museum’s Gilder Center, the lab offers activities to explore global forces that fuel and maintain our climate system led by Museum facilitators. Visitors will investigate elements of the four spheres of our planetary systems; atmosphere, geosphere, hydrosphere, and biosphere, and their influence on climate.

Climate Education in Action

Friday, September 26, 5 pm

Organized by the Museum with SubjectToClimate, the Climate and Resilience Education Task Force, the Climate Mental Health Network, the National Environmental Education Foundation, and the Yale Program on Climate Change Communication, this event convenes educators, policymakers, and thought leaders on the topic of increasing climate literacy and integrating climate education in the classroom. Museum President Sean Decatur will offer welcome remarks, followed by a keynote presentation by climate scientist and communicator Katharine Hayhoe and a series of short talks led by New York City educators who have successfully brought climate change education into their classes.

Climate Change at the Museum

The American Museum of Natural History’s global mission is to discover, interpret, and disseminate information about human cultures, the natural world, and the universe through a wide-ranging program of scientific research, education, and exhibition. Through this work, the Museum addresses the most pressing challenges of our day, including the impacts of climate change.

The Museum’s efforts to educate the public about climate change include permanent exhibitions, such as the dynamic media wall in the Museum’s David S. and Ruth L. Gottesman Hall of Planet Earth where visitors interact with current data on the climate crisis; special exhibitions that travel to venues around the globe; and a diverse range of public programs and in-person and online educational offerings for learners of all ages and for educators. The Museum’s extensive scientific collections are used by Museum scientists and researchers from around the world as critical evidence to understand the effects of climate change and other urgent environmental threats.

31) Brooklyn Academy of Music

Upcoming Events

The Mahabharata (8K restoration)

Directed by Peter Brook (1989)

Sep 18 at 7:30pm

Steinberg Screen at the BAM Strong

651 Fulton St.

Brooklyn, NY

Tickets start at $28

In October 1987, BAM made theater history by staging English director Peter Brook’s nine-hour adaptation of the Sanskrit epic Mahabarata in a long-dormant Brooklyn theater—now known as the Harvey Theater at BAM Strong—which proudly hosts Brook’s 1989 film adaptation of that historic production on the Steinberg Screen.

Marking the late director’s centenary in 2025, the film is screening in a stunning new 8K restoration undertaken

by his son, Simon Brook.

Shot in Paris and condensed from its original form to a more concise yet still sweeping cinematic experience, The Mahabharata features an international cast including Akram Khan, Erika Alexander, and Ciarán Hinds, performing an artful distillation of the foundational Hindu epic. Focused on a conflict between two families descended from the same royal house, the film depicts a bitter rivalry that explodes into war, with victory achieved at an unthinkable cost.

Linton Kwesi Johnson

Film by Franco Rosso (1979)

Sep 20 at 7:30pm

Steinberg Screen at the BAM Strong

651 Fulton St.

Brooklyn, NY

Tickets start at $20

Born in Jamaica, poet, reggae artist, and activist Linton Kwesi Johnson (LKJ) moved to England in 1963, and by the late 70s attained iconic status with his robust voice, passionate activism, and fervent verse set to heavy dub. Marking the 50th anniversary of Johnson’s groundbreaking 1975 eponymous poem, the potent

documentary portrait Dread Beat an Blood by Franco Rosso—director of the incendiary Babylon, which screened at BAM Rose Cinemas in 2012, 2019 and 2024—comes to the Steinberg Screen in a beautiful new restoration from the original 16mm elements by the British Film Institute. The film's depiction of a now-vanished Black Brixton gained national attention when its TV premiere was delayed by the Tories until Margaret Thatcher was safely elected, so great was the party’s concern about Johnson’s powers of persuasion.

After the screening, Johnson takes the Harvey Theater stage in person, reciting his poetry in his first US theatrical appearance in close to two decades. More than a timely retrospective, this singular event celebrates a militant artist still raising his voice for justice.

Kaatsbaan Cultural Park Presents

Ayodele Casel:

Freedom in Progress (V.2)

September 19–20, 2025

The performance on Friday, September 19 at 7PM will include a post-show artists talk led by fellow festival artist Kayla Farrish. The performance on September 20 is at 4PM. Freedom in Progress (V.2) is presented in partnership with Works + Process LaunchPAD.

Following last year’s critically acclaimed phenomenon Freedom…In Progress, tap dancer and choreographer Ayodele Casel returns to the electrifying 1979 improvisation of jazz legends Max Roach and Cecil Taylor—meeting their fearless exchange with her own blend of rhythmic love, precision, and liberation. During her residency at Kaatsbaan, Casel has deepened this exploration, shaping it into a first draft of an evening-length work.

Casel is sought after as a “tap dancer and choreographer of extraordinary depth,” and a “force of wit and wonder” (New York Times). Known for her highly skilled and expansive improvisation, Casel’s projects include her concert and Bessie Award-winning film Chasing Magic, and her Drama Desk-nominated work as tap choreographer for the Broadway revival of Funny Girl.

Tivoli’s newest restaurant addition and immediate hot spot, Club Sandwich, is offering specially curated picnic options for folks spending Saturday, September 20 on our beautiful grounds in between extraordinary dance events. Order meals when you buy your tickets and have them delivered onsite! Menu options appear after entering your contact details in checkout. Order by 12 PM, Thursday, September 18. Kaatsbaan Cultural Park Presents

Kayla Farrish’s

DOCILE & A Beast

Saturday, September 20 – Sunday, September 21, 2025

Studio Complex, 120 Broadway, Tivoli, NY, 12583

Kaatsbaan Cultural Park announces two brand-new works from the insatiable dancemaker Kayla Farrish (2024 Annual Festival, Limón Dance Company commissioned choreographer) that draw on Black histories, jazz’s reimagination, and magical realism. Tickets to DOCILE and A Beast are $45 for general admission and $20 with a student ID, available here. The performances take place on Saturday, September 20 at 7 PM and Sunday, September 21 at 2 PM.

The performance on Saturday, September 20, will include a post-show artist talk led by fellow festival artist Ayodele Casel. Special combo ticket deal available: see performances by Ayodele Casel and Kayla Farrish with one $40 ticket. Select the performance times you want to attend for each artist in the checkout process.

DOCILE is a study on untaming, a play on light and darkness, inspired by James Baldwin’s seminal questioning Notes of a Native Son as he bridged the decision of finding freedom outside of America’s borders or returning home in the 1960s to commit himself to resistance movements. Turning towards and colliding with a vibration of freedom, this work witnesses a Black woman in a discovery of truth and a journey of release, asking “What transformation and wildness is possible in reclamation and seeing our full humanity?”

A Beast is an intimate and eruptive conversation between two people as they make sense of one another. They hold one another and listen, opening up to greater depth and feeling. Their words and songs spill into flight and physical risk. They uncover their personal power within, unraveling and finding themselves through the confrontation.

Smith, Stephanie Shin, Gioia von Staden. Costumes are created by Rebecca Kanach with Visual Art Design by Celeste Cooning. Prom Queer
David Rubenstein Atrium
Free

Once upon a time, in a school gym in the middle of somewhere, a student became a Queen. Couples swayed awkwardly under the sea while chaperones drifted by. Wallflowers wearing corsages and boutonnieres of pansy, lavender, and violet lingered, unready or unable to join the dance floor with their intended. Some stayed home and twirled to a tape deck, sketching names and rainbow hearts in locked journals. Others danced boldly at the center of it all. The camera flashed. The clock struck midnight, and an annual rite of passage poetically ended.

Until one fairy tale night: Prom Queer at Lincoln Center.

Featuring the time machine artistry of Hovy, Garth. and his band of Cupids, along with queer performance collective Apocalypse Noir, this night is: the prom you didn’t get to have, the prom you wish could rewrite, the prom you’ll want to remember, your dreamiest slow dance in soft filters.

Dress up or down, come nostalgia, come all, under mylar—join New York’s merriest dance, darlings, where the celebration of love, pride, and becoming reigns supreme ❤.

WINTER FOLKTALE WRITING WORKSHOP

Facilitated by Dom Martello

Thursday, January 22 at 6pm

Start the year off by creating a fresh take on a freezy fable. From the friendly and familiar to the abominable and eerie, kindle your creativity with this writer’s room. In three rounds of image-based prompts, you’ll focus on setting, characters, and conflict to create your own frostbitten folktale. All writing levels welcome!

THE OUTSIDE IN: VOICE & MOVEMENT WORKSHOP

Facilitated by Jasmine Batchelor

Tuesday, February 17 at 6pm

Actors often build characters from the inside, out, meaning they use the text (contextual clues, script insights, breakdowns, extensive table work etc.) to build a character. What happens when you run into a project that requires the opposite approach? This workshop provides some helpful physical tools to creating character, exploring storytelling, and identifying performance strengths through movement and theater games.

TECTONIC THEATER PROJECT WORKSHOP

Wednesday, February 18 at 6pm

An introduction to Moment Work, the devised theater methodology developed by Tectonic Theater Project to create such works as The Laramie Project, I Am My Own Wife, and Here There Are Blueberries.

BUILDING THE BLOB: WRITING WORKSHOP

Facilitated by Joey Merlo

Thursday, February 19 at 6pm

A first draft is like marble: rough, unformed, sometimes amorphous—and that’s an important part of the process. This workshop will offer prompts and tools to help writers of all levels shape that raw material into a clearer, more purposeful play. Rather than imposing formulas, you’ll explore how to listen deeply to your draft, find its center of gravity, and release the unique form already within it.

EMOTION IN MOTION

Facilitated by Maria Mueller

Saturday, March 7 at 1pm

When was the last time you gave your emotional intelligence the attention it deserves? Yes—it's a skill, and like any skill, it can be nurtured and strengthened. In this workshop, you’ll explore the often-overlooked power of naming and understanding our emotions. Too often, we rely on the same handful of words to describe what we feel—but our inner world is far more nuanced than that. Through guided visualizations of imaginary scenarios without the usage of past trauma or any other harmful practices, along with light improvisation, and movement-based exercises, you’ll safely explore a broader emotional range in a supportive, structured space. By the end, you’ll walk away with deeper insight into your emotional patterns and a richer vocabulary to express yourself.

POEMS THAT TEND TO THE PAST

Facilitated by Philipe AbiYouness

Friday, April 24 at 6pm

How might poetry allow us a means by which we might—in the words of Lucille Clifton—tend to the past? This workshop will consider poetry as an act of documentation. Using found materials like photographs, court documents, or letters, participants will write poems that engage with the stories, people, and places that root them. What need not be forgotten? How to engage our personal histories with care, thought, and rigor? Participants will consider these questions among others as they read, write, and talk together.

All workshops are open to the public ages 14 and up. Workshop passes for six workshops are $200. Single workshops are priced at $50 per workshop and can be purchased individually or in addition to a workshop pass. To register, please visit mcctheater.org/2025-26-workshops for more details.

44) New Play Sulfur Bottom and Official Event for NYC Climate Week

Sulfur Bottom invites you to take an exclusive first look at newly released production photos by Austin Pogrob ahead of its September debut. Written by Rishi Varma, the play has been selected as an official event of Climate Week NYC, spotlighting the urgent need for environmental justice. Through the lens of art and storytelling, Sulfur Bottom confronts the challenges of environmental collapse and sparks dialogue about its impact on communities. With performances scheduled throughout the program, the production aims to engage audiences in meaningful conversations about climate change and collective responsibility.

Sulfur Bottom is an eco-gothic drama that explores the quiet devastation of environmental collapse through the eyes of one family over a span of 40 years. Set in a decaying home on the edge of industrial sprawl, the play transforms the slow violence of pollution into something both intimate and unsettling.

During Climate Week NYC, Sulfur Bottom will host four special performances: September 20 at 1 PM, September 24 at 7:30 PM, September 27 at 1 PM, and October 1 at 7:30 PM. This collaboration with Climate Week NYC highlights the vital role that theater can play in promoting climate action. Through these performances, the production invites attendees to reflect on their own relationship with the environment and consider the actions necessary for a more sustainable future.

Each of the special climate week performances will include unique programming such as post-show talkbacks, partnerships with local environmental justice organizations, and community engagement activities (to be announced).
