I started this blog with one daughter, kept it up with the other, to spend time together doing something we enjoyed.
However, things change and people evolve. My daughters are older, busier, and not as interested in writing.
From now on this blog will be mostly mom with occasional contributions from my daughters and maybe even my husband.
Nothing else will change. We'll still focus on sharing fun places to go, fun things to do, and more, and we would  still love to hear your views too

Still More Theater Saturday - The Counter

We were given complimentary tickets to The Counter for review purposes. Any and all opinions expressed here are our own.

Where: Laura Pels Theatre
             111 W. 46th St.
             New York, NY

Who: Recommended for Ages 13 and Up

When: Through November 17, 2024

The Counter is the story of a waitress and her early morning encounters with one of her regular customers. At first, they interact with each other in the way you would expect exchanging pleasantries and talking about general things and the like. However, gradually they start interacting in a much deeper although not romantic way and begin revealing things about their respective lives. Eventually, he crosses the line and asks her for an inconceivable favor although it is probably not what you would think.

The show is basically a two-hander although another character appears fleetingly in one scene and the voice of a fourth person is heard on phone messages. This is a show that is all about the performances. Susannah Flood as the waitress, Katie, and Anthony Edwards in the role of her customer, Paul are both terrific and play off each other well. Amy Warren does a nice job in her brief role as Peg too.

The set is fabulous and may even have you reminiscing about your favorite neighborhood diner especially if you're a certain age. The lighting is great too. It does a terrific job of capturing that sense of early morning light streaking through the diner window.

The show is a bit of a thriller and ends on kind of a cliffhanger. It leaves you wondering what will happen to these characters next which is hard especially since it delves into some fairly sensitive issues. The latter also makes it unsuitable for young children. If you are more interested in a lighthearted story that neatly wraps everything up at the end, you probably won't enjoy this show  However, if you are interested in a small intimate character-driven story and are okay with being left with questions, you will probably like it.
