There is a long list of theatrical luminaries who have taken on the legendary role of Mama Rose in the musical Gypsy and now Judy McLane can be added to their ranks. Her portrayal of the role seems slightly softer than others have portrayed it. There is more of a sense of the love she has for her daughters behind the ambition and the tough stage Mom exterior. This makes it easier to feel for the character.
Talia Suskauer exudes a true sense of innocence in her portrayal of Louise. You can especially see it in her very expressive eyes. This makes her later transition into burlesque star, Gypsy Rose Lee even more striking.
The rest of the cast is good. However, none of them really stand out as much as the two stars. They are the reason to see this fine production. Plus, you won't want to miss the opportunity to hear the great songs, some of Broadway's best, that pepper the score.
